Three Champions Pace Battlers at Capserson Classic

BUENA VISTA, Va. – Led by three senior champions, the Battler wrestlers of Alderson Broaddus University had a strong showing at the Casperson Classic held at Southern Virginia University Saturday.
Jason West, Keith Stednitz, and Cody Spinks were dominant in their marches to the titles in their respective weight classes. West was 4-0 on the day at the 157-pound weight class with a pair of falls and a pair of tech falls, winning 20-4 over Jephte Paul of WVU Tech in the final.
Stednitz followed him at 165 pounds using very physical top work to earn a technical fall and three first period pins in his four matches on the day.
Spinks, ranked ninth in the nation at 184 pounds, wasn't challenged in his run to the top of the podium sandwiching a technical fall within a pair of first period pins.
"These three guys set the tone for the day and were a great example of the kind of wrestling we want to see from our athletes at AB," said head coach Sam Gardner. "They were aggressive and physical and did not stop wrestling at any point. Seven pins and four techs is the kind of results you get from wrestling hard from start to finish. I'm happy with what I saw."
A number of Battlers had strong performances throughout the day, earning numerous wins and medals.
Micah Powell finished with the silver at 141 pounds earning a pair of victories using strong rides in his run to the finals. Cody Buchanan's move to 133 pounds has yielded early positive results, ending up on the second step of the podium and earning himself a Silver medal.
Zach Gwinn was 3-1 on the day and scored several bonus point victories combining low level leg attacks with the ability to score back points on his way to the bronze while Davis Solak had three falls in going 4 and 1 in the tournament at 174 lbs.
Freshman Anthony Gamble made his way to the semi-finals in his first tournament and earned three victories on the day, and Travis Harrington earned his first pair of collegiate victories.
"Our other guys showed some good things today," said Gardner. "We wrestled hard, and were aggressive for the most part. We did some good things and made some mistakes, but we fought from whistle to whistle. We now have a large enough sample of matches to analyze when we get back to work this week. We can make a big improvement as we train this week based on what we learned about ourselves."
The team returns to the mat next weekend for the Green Terror Duals in Westminster, Md.
