MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – Led by a pair of fifth-place finishes by Matt Harris and Keith Stednitz, and a pair of seventh-place finishes by Micah Powell and Cody Buchanan, the Alderson Broaddus wrestling team finished up the two-day Petrofes Invite held at Messiah College.
At 149, Harris opened up with a bye before earning a 13-6 decision over Josh Grossnickle of Messiah College. Harris dropped his round of 16 match to top-seed Alex Kramer as he was pinned in the second period sending him to the consolation round. In the consolation bracket, Harris earned an 18-8 major decision and then advanced to the next round following a medical forfeit. Harris lost his next match 12-9 to Zach Wilson from Greensboro which took him to the 5th place match where he topped Adam Peris from Messiah 9-6.
Stednitz won his opening three matches at 165 with a pair of pins before advancing to the semifinals with a 9-1 major decision over Jesse Gross from Mount Union. In the semis on Saturday, Stednitz was pinned by Tag Wilbur from Messiah in the second period to take him to the consolation bracket. He dropped his first consolation match 8-0 but came back in 5th place match to earn a 16-0 technical fall over Aarin Feliz to finish 4-2 on the day as well.
Buchanan wrestled in the 133-pound bracket as he finished 3-2 on the weekend. He earned a first-round bye and defeated Roger Moyer from Springfield 11-6 but dropped his next match 13-2 to Hunter Harris from Messiah. In the consolation bracket, he won his first match with a first-period pin before getting pinned in his next match. Buchanan wrestled for seventh place as he finished with a 20-5 technical fall victory to earn him the seventh-place finish.
Powell was the final Battler to place on Saturday when the 141-pounder took seventh overall. Powell won his first two matches on Friday earning a 16-3 major decision in the opening round before shutting out Tom Boldosser 7-0 in the second round. Powell wrestled a tough match in the quarterfinals but fell 7-5 to Alvontae Drummond from McDaniel. In the consolation bracket, Powell won his first match 16-0 before falling 11-2 in the next match. He went on to wrestle for seventh place as he pinned Cory Fleming from Wilkes in just 48 seconds.
Also winning matches for AB on the weekend included Travis Harrington and Brady Estep.
After earning a bye in the opening round, Harrington defeated Austin Rice from Messiah 11-3 in the second round. In the round of 16, he was pinned by Guesseppe Rea from Wilkes in the opening period sending him the consolation round. In his next match, he was topped by Seth Hayes to close out his day.
In the 285-pound division, Estep earned a pin in his first consolation match before he got pinned in his final match to close out the day 1-2.
Following the holiday break, the Battlers return to action January 8th when they wrestle a pair of dual matches against West Liberty and Seton Hill at West Liberty.
