AB Wrestling Splits a Pair on Day One of the Virginia Duals
HAMPTON, Va. -- The Alderson Broaddus wrestling team went 1-1 on the first day of the Virginia Duals.
The Battlers scored a 29-19 victory over Averett in the second match of the day. AB fell behind after four matches, but reeled off wins in five of the finals six matches including the final four matches to claim the win. Jared Burgoyne clinched the match by scoring a 17 second fall at 285.
In the opener, the Battlers fell behind early, but a decision for Tyler Bauer at 157 got the Battlers going. Gino Sita scored a major decision at 174 and Josh Dailey scored a decision at 197. The late run wasn't enough as the Battlers fell 29-16 to the Apprentice School.
"It was a tale of two duals. In our loss we gave up too many bonus points and didn't score enough to put us in a position to win going in to heavyweight," said head coach Sam Gardner. "In the second dual we showed some more fight and heart and scored bonus points in the five of the last 6 matches to get the win."
Bauer, Sita, Dailey and Breen each went 2-0 on the day. Sita claimed his 23rd victory of the year and the 60th of his collegiate career.
"We are young, and we need to do a better job of cutting our weight and preparing mentally and physically to do the job out there on the mat," Gardner said. "I'm glad we were able to pull that second match out and move on through the bracket tomorrow."
The Battlers are back in action on Saturday when they continue wrestling at the Virginia Duals.
Battler Wrestling Finishes 5th at Virginia Duals
HAMPTON, Va. -- The Alderson Broaddus wrestling team posted a fifth place finish at the 39th Annual Virginia Duals after a 1-1 day on Saturday.
In the opening match of the second day, the Battlers fell to No. 19 LIU Post in a competitive match that saw a 6-4 split. Curtis Cox, Tyler Bauer, Gino Sita and Jared Burgoyne all scored wins AB in the match.
In the fifth place dual, AB avenged their opening round loss to Apprentice School defeating the Builders decisively 35-12.
With the score even at 6-6 after three bouts, Levi Hobbs turned the match in favor of the Battlers for good scoring a takedown and back points just before time expired in the third to score a major decision and earn the Battlers their first bonus points of the match.
AB would ride the momentum of that match getting a major decision from Bauer at 157. After a set back at 165, Sita scored a pin at 174 and Tristin Breen picked up a decision at 184. Josh Dailey accepted a forfeit and Jared Burgoyne scored his third fall in as many tries at 285 to set the final.
Bauer, Burgoyne, Dailey and Sita all went undefeated on the weekend. Curtis Cox posted a 3-1 record avenging his only loss in the fifth place match.
"I was very happy with our 5th place match. We wrestled with fire, heart, and passion. All the things that were missing yesterday," said head coach Sam Gardner. "Levi [Hobbs] and Cam Ritchey had huge wins overturning losses from the previous day. This is among the most complete team effort matches we've wrestled here at AB during my time as coach. We are starting 8 freshmen and sophomores, we've got a ton of work to do to reach our potential, but I saw some good things today."
The Battlers are back in action next Sunday when they travel to the Apprentice Invitational.
