New Format for West Virginia High School Wrestling Tournament

64 places to be determined
Tournament expanded to five days

(April 1, 2009) Officials in high places have announced a new format for the West Virginia State High School Wrestling Tournament beginning with the 2010 year.

The new format will feature 64 man brackets, and will determine place winners from Champion to 64th. AAA and AA/A will be combined, and the tournament will run Tuesday through Saturday, with 7:30 AM weigh-ins each day.

A tournament spokesman said that the change in format was needed to address several concerns. "For years, we have wanted to know who was really the champion at a particular weight class. And, for that matter, who was really the, say 36th or even the 53rd best wrestler at a given weight class. This change in format should answer those questions once and for all."

Regional tournaments will be eliminated. Instead, each weight class in the State Tournament will be seeded to 64 places based on the WV-Mat/West Virginia Wrestling Coaches Association individual rankings. The weekly individual rankings will be expanded from ranking eight wrestlers to ranking 64 wrestlers at each weight class, with AAA and AA/A combined at each weight class.

Since the weekly rankings will take on new significance, all high school wrestling coaches will meet on a weekly basis to determine rankings by group consensus. These weekly meetings will be conducted every Sunday morning at 6:00 AM in Kingwood at the Heldreth Motel conference rooms A and B. "All the coaches thought that the weekly meetings would be a great idea. Most coaches don't have anything scheduled for Sundays at 6:00 AM, so this was the ideal time to have these weekly meetings," the spokesman noted.

The consolation brackets will be expanded to provide for determination of place winners all the way to 64th place. "This will involve wrestling a few extra matches, but we think it is worth it. Now there will be no more speculation on who is the 23rd best wrestler at a given weight class." The consolation brackets will be designated as Consolation A through Consolation K brackets.
