Rule Changes for the 2013 Season

The Northern West Virginia Rules Committee for West Virginia Scholastic Wrestling held its annual meeting last week and has announced major rule changes for the 2013 season.

Hazmat Singlets Now Required

Modification: Rule 4-1-1
Beginning with the 2012-13 season, all wrestlers will compete in full body Hazmat suits.

Weight Classes Replaced

Modification: Rule 4-4-1
Beginning in 2012-12, weight classes will be replaced by shoe size classes.

Rationale: The rules committe decided that to eliminate the problem of dangerous "weight cutting," weight classes will be abolished and wrestlers will be paired according to shoe size. Size classes for the upcoming year will be as follows: 5, 6, 7, 8, 8 1/2, 9, 9/12, 10, 10 1/2, 11, 12, 16, 18.

Preseason shoe size certification will be required by to determine the alpha shoe size. In the event that the wrestler has different sized feet, said wrestler must wrestler up to the size dicatated by the larger foot. Size-ins will be held prior to each match. A contestant shall not wrestle more than one shoe size above that class for which the actual shoe size, at the time of the size-in, qualifies the competitor. A one size growth allowance will be allowed on January 15.

Size-ins will be held prior to each match.

Rule Regarding Coach Attire

Modification: Rule 2-2-1
Coaches are prohibited from wearing bib overalls at dual meets and tournaments.
