The Northern West Virginia Rules Committee for West Virginia Scholastic Wrestling held its annual meeting last week and has announced major rule changes for the 2010 season.

Ugly Uniforms Now a Technical Violation

Modification: Rule 7-3-6
The technical violation of reporting to the scorer's table not properly equipped now includes ugly uniforms in the definition of "illegal uniform." This includes any uniform which, in the judgement of the referee, is just too darned ugly.

Rationale: There have been a proliferation of uniforms in recent years, which, in the opinion of the rule-makers, are "just too darned ugly."

End of Match Procedure

Modification: Rule 6-5
A hand shake in the center of the mat by any available family members of the contestants shall also be required as a part of the End of Match procedure.

Rationale: The rules committee feels that more hand shaking is needed..

Any family members in attendance will now be required to shake hands at the end of the match.

Cement Mixer Now Classified as an Illegal Maneuver

Modification: Rule 7-1-5
The Cement Mixer is now classified as an illegal maneuver.

Rationale: There have been numerous complaints about use of the cememt mixer in scholastic wrestling, and its use will be prohibited.

Use of the Cement Mixer now prohibited.

Blood Transfusion Time Added

Modification: Rule 8-2-7
Each wrestler will be given a maximum of 10 minutes for the administration of blood transfusions during the match, if needed, in the event of excessive bleeding.

Rationale: In the event that bleeding can be controlled with five minutes blood time, but blood loss has been sufficient to place the wrestler at a disadvantage because of shock or weakness, the wrestler will have a total of 10 minutes during the match to receive blood transfusion and may then continue wrestling.

Blood transfusion time will be limited to 10 minutes per match.
Fleeing the Mat

Modification: Rule 7-3-1
The technical violation of Fleeing the Mat now includes a prohibition against spontaneously levitating off the mat. At least one supporting part of at least one wrestler must be in contact with the mat at all times.

Rationale: Spontaneous levitation is now prohibited.

Wrestlers must stay in-bounds AND on the mat surface.
