Wheeling Jesuit Wrestling Set to Host First Ever Home Meet

November 7, 2013

WHEELING, W.Va. - The era of collegiate wrestling gets underway at Wheeling Jesuit University on Friday when the Cardinal wrestling program will make it’s home debut in a dual against the Alma College Scots.

The grappling gets under way at 7:00pm in the Alma Grace McDonough Center, but the wrestling is just the tip of the iceberg. WJU’s Coach Doyle and his staff have been hard at work, not only preparing their athletes to perform in front of a home crowd, but to prepare the WJU community to fall in love with the new sport on campus.

“We’re extremely excited, nervous, anxious, giddy… there is just a lot of emotion in our program right now,” said Coach Doyle. “We’ve put a ton of effort into making our first home event a success, and we’ve been lucky to receive so much support from everyone on campus. It’s going to be an exciting and important night for us.”

In keeping with the Jesuit mission of Life, Leadership, and Service the team is asking fans to bring any paper products to donate to the Augusta Levy Learning Center, who works with special needs kids in the area.

Coinciding with the JV matches, the evening will also feature glimpse into the future of Cardinal wrestling with an Ohio Valley high school showcase starting at 5:30. Wrestlers from Wheeling, Steubenville, and even Pittsburgh (among other local cities) will get the chance to wrestle on the big stage before the Cardinals take the mat.

The Wheeling Jesuit Campus Activities Board (CAB) will be hosting a tailgate party for fans in the McDonough Center’s Auxiliary Gym. Other special events include a presentation of the color guard to accompany a performance of the national anthem, and a halftime “small fry” wrestler presentation.

There will also be plenty of fan contests and prizes, including a free t-shirt to the first 150 fans.

On the mat, the Cardinals will look to pick up where they left off last week in their first ever event at the Baldwin Wallace Open where WJU had nine wrestlers place, including two with first place finishes from Skyler Terell (Vienna, W. Va.) and Sawyer Leppla (Cambridge, Ohio).
