Notes from Coach Doyle
Sean Doyle, Head Coach, Wheeling Jesuit University

November 17, 2015

The team competed at the Washington and Jefferson Invitational this past weekend and came home with the team championship along with 7 of the 10 individual titles. In our past two years, we've never crowned a champion at this event, so to bring home seven was quite the accomplishment.

We hope to have a large contingent of WJU Wrestling Fans at West Liberty this Thursday as we travel to the hilltop for our annual rivalry match. If you plan to make the trip, please wear red as we have planned a RED OUT for the evening. It is sure to be a fun night of wrestling and our guys are eager to get back on the mat off of two great weekends. Although, we continue to look forward and focus on getting better, it has been a great start to the season.

Updates

125

Dustin Warner (7-0, 5 falls, W&J Champion)
Dustin continues to get better in all positions and has pinned all five opponents that he's wrestled this season. He pinned the #5 wrestler in the country at the Division III level in the finals Saturday.

Josh Henderson (4-2, 1 fall, 6th place W&J)
It is nice to have Josh down to 125lbs and competing. Josh has made the commitment to get down to 125lbs and he'll have a productive season at this weight class and provide much needed depth.

133

Nolan Whitely (7-0, 2 fall, W&J Champion)
Nolan wrestled with great intensity and purpose through his semi final bout. As much as Nolan has been focusing on improving and getting out of his comfort zone, he slipped back into some old habits in the finals. It created a tight match, won in overtime, when Nolan should have been separating the gap. I'm sure Nolan will learn from his finals match and be better because of it. Nolan was also named Wheeling Jesuit's Male Athlete of the Week!

Scott Lopez (3-3)
Scott competed very hard and looked explosive and opportunistic. As Scott gets back into the swing of things and gets into wrestling shape, he'll continue to become more dangerous. All three losses on Scott's record were matches that he held the lead for the first half of the match.

Nat Brown (3-3)
Nat works his butt off in the room and will get better every time out. In his first two weeks of collegiate experience, he's 3-3 so it's been a decent start for Nat.

Jaylen Hill (0-1)
Did not compete

141

Preston Bowshier (4-0, W&J Champion)
It was great to have Preston back in the line up. Preston was never threatened throughout the day although he had to manage his matches a little more than we'd like. Making weight and competing for the first time can be tough and as usual, Preston handled it well.

Damon Outward (5-2, 3 pins)
Damon picked up a pin in his first match before dropping his next two matches. Damon is explosive and has great offensive attacks that he's just not committing to like we're used to seeing. I'm sure with more matches that his timing will continue to improve and as the season progresses Damon will be in top form soon.

Tyler Hogue (4-2, 1 fall)
Tyler is another one of our newcomers that works relentlessly to get better and improve. He's picked up 4 wins in his first two weeks, but he's not close to satisfied. Tyler is his biggest critic and improves daily because of it.

149

Dominick Nania (6-0, 3 fall)
Dom looked great picking up two pins in his first two matches Saturday. We pulled Dom from the competition after his quarterfinal bout as a precautionary measure to be sure he's ready for Thursday.

Kollin Clark (3-2)
Kollin has a lot of offense that we don't get to see because he's not putting it all together. Like a few other guys, I have confidence that he'll work on this and his transitions will improve.

Skyler Terrell (2-0)
Skyler experienced an injury in his first match of the day in a match that he won. We pulled him from competition after the match for further evaluation.

Jonathan Barrett (1-0)
Did not compete

157

Reyse Wallbrown (8-0, 2 fall, W&J Champion)
Reyse continues to look strong at this weight class and looks better each time out. We're excited about the season ahead and Reyse continuing to show that he will be a force come post season.

165

Peyton Geary (6-0, 1 fall, W&J Champion)
Within our starting line up, we stress the need to have consistency and accountability in each weight class. We are beginning to see this in Peyton. Peyton won his first college tournament this past weekend and did it by winning a few hard fought, grind it out type of matches. He is dangerous, good on top and very composed in tight matches. This is a good recipe for success.

Keegan Driscoll (7-1, 1 fall, 5th place W&J)
Our fans are quickly becoming Keegan Driscoll fans because of the explosiveness and excitement that Keegan brings to the mat. Keegan and Peyton support each other and are both very hard workers, competing for the starting role. Keegan, like Peyton, is establishing that he will be an individual that we can trust in tough situations

Cody Eggers (0-2)

174

Clayton Ray (5-5, 2 falls, 6th W&J)
Clayton redeemed one of his losses from the first weekend of competition and continues to show great toughness in all matches. We believe Clayton can be effective and have success this season as a true freshman and it's important that he continue to learn from his mistakes and minimize the big ones.

Garrett Reinwald (2-3)
Garrett has made a big commitment to drop to 174 this season and we're evaluating if that is the best route for him. Garrett is one of the hardest workers in our room and has great conditioning. When we don't see that in competition, we need to figure out where Garrett will be most effective. That will be determined in the coming weeks.

184

John Lessner (1-2)
In John's first collegiate competition, he fought hard picking up his first win. John did weigh in very light, as he makes the move to 174lbs and will continue to improve.

Nate Starkey (2-1, 1 fall)
Did not compete

197

Terrance Fanning (4-0, W&J Champion)
We've been waiting a while to see Terrance put a Cardinal singlet on and he didn't disappoint. Terrance can score from nearly any position and in bunches that you won't normally see at the 197lbs weight class. Terrance was never threatened and in the finals knocked off an opponent that has been in and out of the top 6 of our region.

Jake Haynes (0-2)

285

Corey Siegfried (5-1, W&J Champion)
Corey won four matches and his toughest match of the day came against his teammate Logan Bowman in the quarters. Corey and Logan wrestled a 1-1 match into overtime, that saw Corey hit a nice single leg to secure the victory. Corey continues to work on getting better in all 3 positions and that's apparent by the early season success that he's experiencing.

Logan Bowman (3-2, 1 fall)
Logan went 1-2 on the weekend and it certainly wasn't the results that he wanted. Logan comes to practice every day looking to get better and that will happen. He and Corey push each other daily and have both improved greatly because of that.

Evan Roberts (1-4)
Evan picked up his first college win and looks better every time out. He works hard and wants to get better. He'll continue to give himself chances to win as the season progresses.

Miguel Staples (0-4)

Nathan Temple (2-0)
Did not compete

A group of our redshirts did compete at the East Stroudsburg Open this weekend. They do not represent Wheeling Jesuit when they compete unattached, and do have to pay all of the expenses related to competing.

TJ Smith 1-2
Ki Ryder 2-0 (withdrew for medical reasons)
Ryan Winslow 3-1 (withdrew for medical reasons)
Chase Logan 2-2

Have a great week ahead and we hope to see you Thursday in your RED!!
