Bears Drop To 3-2

November 19, 2013

RIPLEY, W. Va. - The WVU Tech Golden Bears fell in a hard fought match against Division II foe Alderson-Broaddus on the road at Ripley High School by a score of 36-6 Tuesday evening. There were a number of close matches throughout the dual, but the Golden Bears came up short in the majority of them, leading to the lopsided score.

Tech was lead by Freshman Kyle Shepherd (Bakersfield, Ca.) who used an aggressive first period to run out to a 5-0 lead and then cruised to a 9-3 victory. Kyle's record moves to 5-0 on the year at 174 lbs. Shepherd's win was followed by Tola Morakinyo's hard fought 4-3 victory over fellow freshman and West Virginia State Champion Garrett Onderko. It was a match filled with hard hand fighting and a number of near misses on the edge of the mat that could have extended the Wilde Lake High School (Md.) product's lead. Morakinyo moves to 4-1 on the season.

Said Gardner about the loss: "Alderson-Broaddus did a really good job tonight. They out fought us in a number of positions and were aggressive and hard nosed up and down the line-up. The team score was lop-sided, but we were in a number of matches that could have gone either way if he had made better decisions here or there. It is early in the season, and we started 9 freshmen tonight. We will learn from this and we will get better. We've got to be more aggressive, get more leg attacks off, and when we are defending leg attacks we need to square up and extend our opponents more. We work on this in practice regularly, but there will be a renewed emphasis beginning tomorrow morning."

The Golden Bears have a quick turn-around and return to the mats Friday evening at Westminster High School (Md.), where they will take on Penn State Mont Alto in a 7 p.m. dual meet. The following day they will be across town at McDaniel College for the Sam Case Green Terror Duals (Noon start), where they will wrestle Southern Virginia University, McDaniel, UMBC, and the University of Scranton.

Said Gardner "We are fortunate that we can get back on the mat quickly and have an opportunity to fix the mistakes we made tonight. We will face some some tough competition in Maryland, so we need to really be focused on making improvements in the next few days."
