Tech Concludes Season

MARIETTA, Georgia — The WVU Tech wrestling team finished their 2015-16 campaign at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) East National Qualifier Saturday, finishing ninth out of 11 teams with 22.5 points. The Golden Bears complete their season with a 6-11 duals record and as United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championship runners-up.

The qualifier allows the top four finisher's in each of the area's ten respective weight classes to receive an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships in Topeka, Kansas, March 4-5.

Senior Conrad Lacey (157) and junior Terry Nance II (197) earned fifth place finishes at their respective weights to lead the Gold and Blue. Lacey went 3-3 on the day including a 7-6 decision over David Capers (Truett McConnell) in the quarterfinals and a 9-1 major decision over Bryce Hoffman (Lindsey Wilson).

Nance finished the day with a record of 4-3 by posting a 14-2 major decision over Patrick Wasp (Truett McConnell), 3-2 decision over Ben Cruz (Southeastern) and 3-2 score over Jared Key (St. Andrews).

Junior Paul Gonzales placed sixth at 133 pounds during the tournament. Gonzalez was 3-3 including a 4-3 decision over Tyran Taylor-Owen (St. Andrews) and a 10-3 score over John Williams (Cumberlands).

Lacey, Nance and Gonzales each earned a bye in the first round for their first victories of the day.

Tech earned USCAA National runners-up status February 14 in State College, Pennsylvania with the help of Golden Bear champion and now back-to-back national title holder at 197 pounds, Terry Nance.
