comments: The Jr. High Team is the reserve team at a lot of schools. Check out the Beckley article on Independence, Shady Spring. Super Bowl - Yes, Football has a development team that they can pull players from to fill out their rosters of injured players. Baseball - Yes, Baseball has a minor league program that they pull players from. Towards the end of the season, they expand their rosters and call up AAA ball players to see how they fare against big-league compitition, usually playing ahead of veterans. Poker - I don't think a youth who is wrestling Jr. High has folded his cards, he's just playing at a different table. He's making the best of a situation and getting mat time, somewhere. Is it fair for a 11th grader who hasn't wrestled in years to come out during mid-season to fill an injured spot ahead of a 9th grader who is currently wrestling at the Jr. High Level? If I were coach, I'd take both of them and let them decide it on the mat. It'd be my job to put my best team on the mat even if it means some of them have to move up in weight to fill a weak spot. But I think the ultimate decision lies with the wrestler and their parent, not us, the biased fans. I think it's the coaches job to give each of them the oppertunity. It's not about who's won the most wrestle offs. If they are all paying their dues, then it's who is wrestling the best come regionals.

comments: Not only did Starsick not pin everyone in the first, but he failed to win all his matches period. He was defeated by 215 Vince Magnone of Weir High 5-1. Not to take anything away from Starsick, he IS a very good wrestler. Vince is now 19-0.

comments: The recent comment about weight certifications, etc. bring up a point I have tried to make for a long time. I have had Dr.'s offer to sign enough blank certifications for the whole team and let me fill them in later! On the other side of the coin, I know of a wrestler who got his weight certification done the day he got his physical and the Dr. saw he weighed 126 (clothes on) and certified him for 128 (old weight classes) by mid season the kid weighed about 117 and had to wrestler 128 instead of 123 because that was what he was certified for. My team is done by a sports medicine specialist who is gracious enough to help us out. He skin folds each and every kid and is careful to make sure the kids stay safe. What I propose is a regional weight certification at a central location with Dr.'s who understand the sport yet ALWAYS put the kids safety first. That way everyone is on a level playing field so to speak. 3.5 % body fat borders on insane. The kid could actually have died from hypothermia! I know from experience that my son cut way too much weight (he grew 4 1/2 inches during his sophomore year) and got beat by guys at the end of the season that he handled easily at the beginning. Common sense has to rule over the desire to fill your forfeits, etc.

comments: To Superman: I enjoyed your picks in AAA.Just of note however,Daggett of PHS has moved up to 189 and Marks down to 171.Why...who knows...and, will they stay there? One young man you probably have never seen wrestle is Soph.Kyle Walters of South at 152.He may be a year away from the top of the podium in Huntington, but he may make some noise at this year's state tourney. You are certainly a Billy Barbour fan and I have noticed a few losses come his way,but this weight class looks to be wide open and he certainly has as good a shot as any.Could come down to who wrestles the tough ones during the season.Good Luck Super One!

Better reconsider your picks at 112. Garvin beat Ballam at Wheeling 1-0, and Garvin was not at100%. It ain't over till the fat lady sings the last weekend in February.

comments: Comment on Jr. high boys moving up!!!! As I see it if a kid, (9th grader), thinks he is or the coach thinks his good enough to wrestle high school that decision needs to be made before the season starts, not after an injury to a starter. The reason being, if we start letting kids compete on the Jr high level then let them come up after the season, you'll start to see a lot of SUPER HERO's that will want to double up and build up some kind of status thing and have the best of both worlds, and if they are really that good why would you waste your time with no competition down there? Just stop and think, do you get to take cards out of the hands of those who fold in poker just to make your hand better? or do the super bowl teams get to pick-up players for the injured before the big game? I know why this is such a big issue now, but there are rules and regulations set up for such things. In this case I can see where its may be tempting, BUT... I believe you should sign-up before season, AND coaches should not drag up wrestlers and undermind the reserves that have paid the price. What does a coach gain in the years ahead if cuts the feet out from under his reserves??? I think that this is geared more to the coaches, just as the other issue of body fat, I feel sorry for the coaches that are thinking about heading or have already headed in this direction. You stand to loose a lot of respect and honor from your wrestlers and fans, and MAY HAVE ALREADY. Its all about "making the most of what you have" THATS the sign of a GREAT coach. Thanks.

Like all "gossip" you have only a few of the facts. Go talk to the coach and to the child himself and see what the policy for wresle-offs were at the beginning of the season. It would be be a mistake to put down a coach before you talked to him yourself and got all the facts. If this is the program I think you are talking about I happen to know this particular coach goes way out of his way to help all his wrestlers become good young men on and off the mat.

comments: Mid Season "Super Picks"

103---Anthony Easter, Nitro--- Tulsa Nationals, West Virginia junior league State Tournament,…. West Virginia High School State Tournament the inevitable progression of Anthony Easter. Following in his brothers foot steps look for Easter to pick up his first state title.
103 Top Contenders--- Lucas Cappas, Osuna-Cotto, Chris Conner, Shyver, Kurt Shumante

112---Kyle Turnbull, University--- His Dad coaches a divison 1 school ,WVU, Kyle looks like he’s ready to wrestle for them.
112 Top Contenders--- Kevin Ballam, and Riner are very close to Turnbull, other contenders: Rader, Garvin

119---Shane Grogg, South--- He beat Litton, I think He’s gonna win..that should be good enough
119 Top Contenders---Frerichs, Litton,

125---Ryan Metz,South--- He holds the only win by a West Virginia wrestler against the legendary Matt Stevens… One year later. He may face his toughest opponent yet, 2x Champ Matt Easter . .. I think Metz gets him..but its gonna be a "sloberknocker!!!"
125 Top Contenders---Adam Kennedy who drops to the loaded division for some reason, Shaw, Hodges, Ricky Brandau

130---Matt Smith, Ripley--- Good leg rider, Good all around skills, and Hes got a kid brother to show up. His toughest challenger, South’s Matt Bosley who to many would appear to be the obvious choice.
130 Top Contenders---Bosley, Adam Kennedy , if He decides to stay at 130 could be a threat to Smith, Knapp

135---Chantz Griffith, Jefferson--- suffering injuries and not finishing last season , the bad boy from Jefferson returns to take the title. Chantz’s torquehalf has put away some of the best, his arm drags, singles, doubles, screwlock throws, and the 1000 other great moves hes got will finish off the rest.
135 Top Contenders--- Mitch Smith, Young, Delligatti

140---Wes Lane, Herbert Hoover--- With a win over Gibbs , Lane looks like the man to beat. I am looking forward to a possible Lane vs Kessler at JIT, that should be good. Lane is known for his "super" human strength, Kessler is know for his "super" human technical ability . . .It’s the age old battle of the technical wrestler against the power wrestler.
140 Top Contenders---Gibbs, Kessler, Mayle, Dye

145---Danny Lord, Hedgesville--- Returing the favor from last years state finals, Lords victory over Ripley makes him the man to beat. . . This is another final that should be a barn burner.
145 Top Contenders--- Ripley, B.Pickens

152---Billy Barbour, Martinsburg--- At Wheeling Barbour finally lived up to the hype finishing 8-1 with his only loss to an Ohio wrestler.
152 Top Contenders--- Derrick George, Darren Hayes, Mitch Casto, Aaron Futten, Justin Hawes, Troy Foltz…Troy could be a possible dark horse,

160---Nathan Pickens, South--- A win over Daggett at 171!!! A win over Daggett at 171 by PIN !!!! He’s my pick.
160 Top Contender--- Mayes, Other Contenders: Geary, Delligatti, Justin Snyder

171---Chris Daggett, Parkersburg--- Former champ.. wants the title again and He should get it. Good leg rider for a higher weight wrestler, good wrestler period.
171 Top Contenders---Linger, Geary, Matt Roach

189---Jeff Courtney, Fairmont Senior--- "The Man is great" Rocky Balboa on Apollo Creed- Rocky 1."The Man is great" Superman on Jeff Courtney
189 Top Contenders---Marks, Taylor, Phalen

215---Andrew Starsick, North Marion--- Champion once again..Did He pin everybody at Wheeling in the first period?
215 Top Contenders--- Delligatti, Files,Wes Greer, Thomas, Frazier

275---Chris Morrison, South--- I picked him to win last year, I’m doing it again. He should do it this year. Still a tough weight class.
275 Top Contenders--- Satterfield, McCourt, Hoover

Wraping it up…I am not from or associated in any way with one or more of the following schools: Parkersburg, Parkersburg South, Fairmont Senior,Hedgesville, Jefferson, John Marshall, North Marion, Huntington, Nitro, Oak Glenn, or even Clay Battelle. So don’t bother insinuating that I am.

comments: To #1 fan : I know of a case right now being persued by parents, of a boy who dropped alot of weight for the coach, had his fat content maesured at 3.4% bodyfat, but was put on his form at 9%. He stayed at that weight for a few weeks and started having health problems. He was taken to his family Dr. for a physical, and the Dr. had a fit. The boy was told his heart was under too much stress. The Dr. redid the fat certification, and he was to move up in weght class. When the coach was told what his Dr. said, he was basically forced off the team. Exactly where are our priorities, when titles are put before kids lives. This isn't happening at some University, it's happening in High School. For Gods sake lets get our priorities straight.

December 31, 2001
comments: The one good thing about wrestling is the coaches never have to make the line up, the wrestlers choose it for them, by wrestling off. So what if a junior high wrestler finishes his season and moves up to vastiy team and beats out the starter. Isn't about putting the best team possible out there to compeat? How can you get any better as a team if u have no competion in the wrestling room. If everyone has a spot people become lazy and satisfied with just starting. If your not going to put the best product out there you possibley can they why bother trying. I have know in the past several wrestlers who moved up to after junior high seasons and not only made it to state but placed. So really there is no difference in a junior high kid beating out a starter then a reserve beating out a starter at the end of the year.

comments: i'd like to make a comment to the people complaining about how others are ranking the weight classes. they are only perdictions and we all know that the top wrestler in each weight class can and do get upset. take sternthal from east last year he was ranked first most of the year and almost didnt make states. preditcion are only guesses and they dont really matter cuz the real champion will be crowned in huntington which is 2 months away alot can still happen before then!!!

comments: I would like to send my congrats to the bulldogs on finishing third at wheeling park duals. Billy Barbour and Justin Kessler looked great! Cant wait to see you at states. On another note, Justin Kessler is not even wrestling 145 he is at 140. Also, does anyone know that Billy Barbour is wrestling 152? No perdictions? Justin Kessler should also be very tough at 140. Well, once again congrats to the Bulldogs and the rest of there season. See you at Jefferson.

comments: I agree with #1 fan's comments about body fat and doing what is best for the wrestlers. Too bad more coaches don't see it that way. Don't know about your area, but over here there are a lot of politics when it comes to who gets to wrestle what weight classes and wrestle offs arent allowed against certain wrestlers for the "good of the team". it is very much a team sport, but it takes individuals to get the job done in this sport. It all has to come together.

comments: to the question can a jr. high wrestler move up after their season? the answer is yes for the state of wv, however, several counties has modified that rule by putting atime limit on which a jr. high wrestler can move up. the question is to the high school coach!! IS IT FAIR TO THE WRESTLERS ON YOUR HIGH SCHOOL TEAM THAT PAID THERE DUES, TO THE TEAM TO LET, A JR. KID COME UP ALMOST AT THE END OF THE SEASON. TO ME IT IS THE SAME AS LETTING A KID COME OFF THE STREETS TO BE PART OF THAT TEAM.(THERE TO IS A TIME LIMIT FOR A KID TO COME OUT FOR WRESTLING, DECEMBER 23)

comments: I would like to congradulate the South wrestlers on their 7th place finish at the Brecksville tmt.this weekend. Finishing 7th with 6 starters not evening wrestling is great. Congrats to Nathan Pickens on his 1st place finish. You really doninated this weekend. I also wanted to tell Nathan how proud you made the south fans the night you wrestled PHS. You handled yourself with great character and class. I have never seen a greater display of sportsmenship from a wrestler than I witnessed from you that night. South should be very proud of you not for just your wrestling ability, but for the fine young man that you are. Congradulations to Shane Grogg on his 2nd place finish at Brecksville, Chris Morrison on his 4th place and Bryce Pickens with a 7th place. Keep up the great work South!!!

comments: I was just wondering. Do all of the High School Wrestling teams in West Virginia have to pay back their schools for away trips and raise their own money for new warm-ups and singletts, or is this stuff provided by the schools and county board of education. We are wearing the same singletts that this school han six years ago, while other teams in this area have 5 or 6. The wrestling team recieves no help from the school what so ever. We are looked upon as the black sheep of sports (well so is everythig else except football) here. Does anyone have any ideas on what we as a team can do ?

comments: Just a comment for the person questioning Patriot 49 on his 215 AAA predictions. I really have no idea who would be the top 4 wrestlers in this category, but I do know that Thomas did not place at the Brooke Classic because he was not there because he had just finished playing football for PHS (along with 4 other starting wrestlers from the team). They did not have in the required number of wrestling practices yet, so were not eligible to wrestle. Thank you

comments: I have seen and talked with many wrestlers, and I have noticed that the Point Pleasant wrestling team is outstanding.Matt werner seems very good, and with out a doudt I think he will make top 3 at states. Jesse Knott seems very strong and stood out in my mind. David Bonecutter, Wow, what a wrestler, I thank that he also has a good chance in placing in the state turnament. Nick Duncun seems great, he looks like a naterual. Point may be a young team, with only two seniors, but they are going to be wonderful in a few years. They could pull it off and place at states in the team competition. They have good coahing and excellent wrestlers, they are truly a team. They boys seem to have fun, along with the wrestlers. comments: Wrestling went to measuring the fat content on every wrestler, to set a limit for each wrestler to drop to. I know that some teams have Doctors that still put on the forms, what the coaches want them to.I'm a coach and I've seen it happen. It's a very dangerous thing to do. We've had kid's die over the last few years, from dropping too much weight, that's why we started to set limits. Is it really worth a kid possibly losing his life, to wrestle 5 pounds lighter? The coaches tell the kid's "Do it for the good of the team".All kids want to be a team player, so they do as they're asked to.Kid's don't know better, coaches do. Lets do whats best for the kids.

Also at 215, Delligatti and Starsick have not met yet, as Thomas and Delligatti have not met. Yet Delligatti won Brooke, where Thomas did not make it to the finals. And Starsick is a returning state champ!

comments: I was just looking through some of the predictions and I got a little confused. I saw that whorton of OG isn't predicted in the top 6 in AA at 145, and Mayle from EF is predicted 4th in AA. Whorton pinned mayle at a quad and placed 3rd in the state last year at 152. I think people need to think about their predictions a little more. Also Tim Cashdollar of OG beat Futton but yet Futton is predicted 3rd in AAA and Cashdollar beat him last year and beat him again this year but cashdollar isnt in any of the predictions. comments: Thanks - Coach LeMasters for explaining some of the details involved in running a pool tournament. Point Pleasant High School belongs to the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League and we do alot of our wrestling in Ohio. We go to two tournaments in Ohio that we really like. The first is the New Lexington tournament where they use a Medinia Board to call up all of their matches. In this tournament each match is given a number and when their bout comes up it is placed on the board and they report to that mat to wrestle. This really makes the tourament speed up with very little down time between matches and no announcing is required for the whole tournament. The second tournament is the John Deno tournament held at Athens High School. This is a pool tournament where they seed the wrestlers in two pools and the winner of each pool wrestle for 1st and so on. If you hold this on one day each wrestler will get 5 matches.

An Olympic Pool tournament is a individual tournament not a dual tournament. You do not get forfeits for wins. There are different ways to score it also. You could keep quality points through out the tournament and add them to the placement points at the end of the tournament or you can just wait to the end of the tournament determine your places and add up your placement points to determine the top team. Here at Point Pleasant we have modified this format to allow 12 teams to participate and hold the tournament over two days. In this format you get 10 matches with one wrestler you don't wrestle. If a school has an extra wrestler in that class we make sure that he/she doesn't wrestle their own teammate. For teams with limited numbers of wrestlers this would be a great format because it's individual not duals.

Jack Cullen and myself develpoed a computer program to track results through out the tournament. JoAnn Cullen,Susie Nott, and Darlene DeWees did a great job of putting the results of each match on the computer. At the end of the tournament coaches had results of every match for the entire tournament. If I can assist you in setting up this type of tournament let me know.

comments: I believe that the 152 pounders need to watch out for Point Pleasants Matt Warner. He is an outstanding wrestler. I watched at the Point turny and saw the match between him and Weese from St. Albans. The score was close but Warner left his mark there. I can not wait to see Warner wrestle at Farimont. In this remark I am saying that Warner is the number 1 wrestler in 152. I see that some people think that George is. Well, I guess we will find out. My prediction is that Warner is number 1 in the state at 152. Watch out!!

comments: RE: Earlier post regarding high number of forfeits
I stand corrected. A team can win a dual with less than 8 wrestlers. Check out the team scores. Bishop Donahue beat Clay Batelle 30-6 with 5 wrestlers.(CB-1 wrestler).

I do admire the individuals who are going out for their teams and wrestling. I applaud the schools for not dropping their programs. I don't know what the soloution is, but someone smarter than me may be able to come up with one. Follow-up question-Didn't double forfeits used to score two points for each team? Is that no longer true?

comments: In response to the question about PHS's Thomas's finger, he broke it in three places on Monday, the 17th. It was swollen and not functioning on the 19th when we wrestled North Marion, but was feeling better by the 22nd. It was taped and padded real good on the 22nd. He will probably not wrestle again for another ten days to two weeks.

comments: I agree with the person saying that 135 is the toughest weight class in middle school. I have been to some of the tournaments this year and by far the toughest wrestlers are in this weight class. There are one or two good wrestlers in the other classes but 135 is loaded with them.

comments: I will try my best to explain what a pool duals is like. There are 11 teams. It is like a hybrid between a duals and a bracketed tournament. We ran 5 mats. The 75's all come out and there are 10 75 lbs matches (2 on each mat) then the 80's come out and so on. We do this 5 times the first day and then 5 more times the second day. Each kid gets 10 matches in 2 days barring forfeits, defaults, etc. We fill the empty spots on rosters with B teamers so that each kid gets 10 matches. At the end there is a set of criteria if there are any ties for best records. 1st places score 20 for your team. 2nds score 16 and so on. Only 1-4 places score. You add up all your team points to determine the winner. It's like duals but you don't line up and wrestle head to head. You can also go back and use the record sheets to pull out matches and see how you would do head to head as teams by simply listing how your wrestlers did overall against another team. It makes the event go very quickly and there is always someone from your school wrestling - no waiting like a regular duals event.

I really like the format. It can be done with a smaller number of teams - The event we are going to at Gallia Academy on the 12th of January is the same format with fewer teams. If you have more that 11 teams you make 2 pools and the winners from each pool wrestle at the end. I guess thats about it in a nutshell. Coach Darst or Coach Cullen from Point could probably explain it better than I can. I see it as having a lot of advantages. - 10 matches for each kid (win or lose) unlike a bracketed event where you lose 2 in a row and are out. It goes quickly and holds the kids interest as there is always a team mate wrestling. You don't have to score advancement points and stuff. In fact you don't have to score until the very end. The best wrestlers should always wrestle each other (they can't get upset early and knocked down to losers bracket because there is no losers bracket) . I suggest you give this format a try. I think you'll like it a lot.

comments: After watching the second round of the Point Pleasant Olympic Pool Tournament, I was impressed by the Ripley High team. They have several wrestlers who should contend for state championships. Among them are the Smith brothers, Matt and Mitch. I was also impressed by Matt Warner of Point Pleasant. Warner had a very exciting match with St. Albans' Travis Weese, that was won by Warner 4-3. Speaking of St.Albans, they had a disappointing last place team finish, but I heard that they were only several wins away from placing 3 or 4 wrestlers in the top 4. As it was only Joe Roberts placed and that was a tie for third with Point's Nick Russell. I also saw that several Riverside High wrestlers placed and their team is improved as was predicted. Congrats to all the placing wrestlers and especially those from the Kanawha Valley!

County champ last year as a 6th grader @ 90, WSAZ placer as a 6th grader, 37-4 overall last year. This season so far 20-4 with 2 of those losses at 115 weighing 108 but now making 105 easily. I feel that both 105 and 115 will be very tough classes as there is a need for a 110 in the middle. I also see 95 as a spot for some great competition and 145 is not too shabby either. comments: Has anyone noticed the number of forfeits in some of these duals? Holding a “dual” where one match is actually wrestled and all others are forfeits is a farce in my opinion. Must have been a lot of down time to give guys their rest between matches.
I understand that wrestling is an individual sport. However, if your team forfeits more than half the matches they have no chance of winning and it is ludicrous to hold the match. Should a sporting event occur when the outcome has already been determined. Maybe we need a rule that says if you can't field a competitive team (7-8 wrestlers) then you can't wrestle duals.
I don't have a problem with these teams entering individual tournaments. However, going on with these "duals" pads the records of many wrestlers with wins that are questionable at best. Maybe the coaches on the winning team don’t care because it makes their wrestlers look better, but what about the integrity of the individual’s records.

I have given in to the temptation to add a couple of gadgets to this website. A scroller on the front page, and this poll thingy. The problem with such gadgets is that they are often unpredictable. They don't work on older versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape. Even a newer version of Netscape seems to choke on them at times. I'm having trouble getting my newer Netscape to load the page properly, but maybe its because I'm still running an anemic first generation Pentium running at an amazing 100mHz with a lightning fast 12K modem. The poll doesn't work at all on Netscape 2.0, and just fouls up the page, which is why I put it on a separate page - so it doesn't mess every thing else up on the page. Let me know how they are working on your machine. If they are messing things up I'll take them off.

comments: I would just like to say congradulations to Ripley High School on there 2nd Point Pleasant Olympic Pool Championship in as many years. Also on all the individual champions, great job!
The wrestlers I thought that were very impressive were Ryan Bumgardner, Ritchie, 125lbs.....Mitch Smith, Ripley, 135lbs.......Jesse Nott, Point Pleasant,140lbs.........Matt Warner, Point Pleasant, 152lbs.........Matt Bender, Roane County, 160lbs (Matt was injured in his second match, he won both) and Gary Nicholson, Roane County, 215lbs.
These wrestlers stood out from the rest in my opinion........also I would have to say that Mitch Smith is by far Ripley's best wrestler, he pined Nick Duncan of Point Pleasant in the 3rd period.........this is Duncan's only loss of the season........Smith has a great chance of winning this class in my opinion........also Matt Warner was the other wrestler I thought stood out.......I had been hearing alot about him so I wanted to see for my self.... ....HE IS THE REAL DEAL!
This was overall a really good tourny!

The Bees had 3 place winners in Chris Satterfield took second losing to Albert Childress of Grundy #1ranked Heavyweight in the nation.Brandon Geary who took third lost to the returning state champion from Grundy in the Semi's.Blane Mayle also came in 6th,there was much controversy from what i hear in his weight class i was not there to witness it but from what i hear the Michigan is not illegal. There were also 37 teams in this tournament and ranked in the top 5 as top high school tournaments. Also I would like to congratulate Jefferson High.

comments: On behalf of my team, parents and coaches I would like to thank Point Pleasant for a fantastic tournament. It continues to be the best event I have ever attended. (Including the ones I ran!) All in all - high school and jr high/middle divisions wrestled over 1600 matches in 2 days on 5 mats. All of my kids got 10 good matches and we were only there a total of around 9 1/2 hours not counting weigh ins. The food was fantastic and the Medina board and bout numbers made the whole event run smoothly and efficiently. The computer generated results and schedules made the coaches jobs so much easier. We were fortunate enough to win the tournament this year but I would feel the same about the event if we had been last. The competiton was excellent and it gave us a chance to wrestle some teams we never see until WSAZ such as East Fairmont, Spencer, McKinley, Athens, OH, etc. Congratulations to Coaches Darst and Cullen and all your support staff for a great weekend.

comments: Just like to congratulate the eagles for their recent performances at the Berkeley Springs Inv. and The Berkeley County Match. At the Berkeley Springs Inv. Dan Lord, Kevin Ballam and Chuck Files all took 3rd and others on the team looked pretty good as well. Like I said before, the potential is there it's just going to take a lot of hard work for people to reach that potential but as someone once said nothing worth having is easy. Speaking of potential Hedgesville is starting 5 freshman 2 of which are first year wrestlers. 103 Zimmerman and 171 McKinney are both freshman first year wrestlers. McKinney won the Berkeley County Championship and in my opinion is extremely physically strong for a freshman. If he sticks with it and keeps learning the moves, getting down technique the future is bright. The other freshmen 119 Grim, 140 Young, and 152 Foltz all have handled themselves well so far. Foltz scoring the upset of Barbour of Martinsburg was huge for the youngster and very sweet. Foltz needs to keep the same intensity he showed in the last half of that match throughout his entire matches. Again these youngsters are showing potential and just need to keep a good attitude and keep working hard. Also like to congratulate both Dan Lord and Ben Wood of Independence on how they handled themselves during and after the incident that took place at the Berkeley Springs Inv. during their match. Both men showed class in a terrible situation. Both are very good wrestlers who are now 1-1 against each other but more importantly by Lord not losing his cool and Wood understanding what was going on. I just feel both men showed a lot of class and should be commended for it. I know I'm being a little vague about what happened but that's because I know that if I put what went down on here it would not be posted. And why dwell on the negative instead commend both wrestlers for being a couple fine young men as well as good wrestlers. Anyway congratulations to the eagles, good luck at Wheeling Park, and hope everyone, eagles and everyone else, have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. PS: anyone know what teams will be in the Jefferson Inv. and Fairmont Inv. this year? Also anyone have the breakdown of the Jefferson match with Williamsport and FSK?

comments: I know there's been much talk on the net concerning the top middle schools in the state. Braxton is working hard and improving every day but I have the utmost respect for the Spencer Middle School program. Coach Jarvis does a great job teaching counter moves and he's loaded with strong, experienced kids. They were a close second to Independence at the BCMS Invit. and they're only going to get better. Look for Spencer Middle to be at the top of the middle school heap at WSAZ's. They're at Pt. Pleasant this week-end and I'm sure their finish there will be noted by all who have to wrestle them during the remainder of the season.

Thanks to Mike Kirby and Mike King who officiated our Braxton Middle School Invit. on Dec. 15. We always appreciate sportsmanship which can only be generated by the athletic director, coaches and officials. Again, thanks for the great officiating. It's the only way our young guys can learn.

And as for there 9th graders, well they have Brandon Patton @ 95lbs., Drew Munson @ 125, Shaun Smith @ 135, Ryan Mathers @ 145, Matt Powell @ 155, Corey Barr @ 190, and Jessi Barre @ Hwt. That is almost half of the team, and you say they aren't loaded with 9th graders? My Prediction is that Blennerhassett will have at least 6 coounty champs.

I had the chance to watch an excellent match the other night between Cameron's Tucker Brown and Tyler Consolidated's Chad Snider . These two 152 pounders, as i previously stated, are my pick for # 1 and 2 in the state. Although i am partial to Snider, My hat goes off to Tucker Brown, who decisioned Snider 8-7. Congratulations Tucker on a well fought victory. My only hope is that they again meet at the Cameron tourney Jan. 5th. Q: Can a wrestler compete in an independent (or open) tournament not sanctioned by the WVSSAC during the season?
-- Concerned Fan

A: Yes, by written permission of his principal, with the following stipulations:
1. He can NOT go to the open tournament as a representative of his school.
2. He can NOT compete in an open competition the same time that his school team is competing. If the junior varsity squad is having a match and the wrestler is a varsity performer, he still can NOT wrestle in an open event during the same time as the junior varsity meet is scheduled. But note, a wrestler could wrestle in an open event, say on a Saturday morning, and then wrestle for his school's wrestling team that night, with of course the permission stated above.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If a wrestler does NOT get written permission from his school's principal and competes in an open tournament, he will be removed from the school team for the remander of the season. That is an WVSSAC ruling.

comments: In reply to the poster who ranked Blennerhassett and Edison as the top two middle schools in the state. No argument with their being the top two teams . . . but they are Jr. Highs not middle schools. As a middle school coach, I can tell you that having 9th graders makes a huge difference due to maturity level, age, etc. Of course, 7-9 schools have a hard time filling the little guys classes while we middle schools can sometimes use 6th graders. Some of the best middle schools the state has to offer will be hooking it up at the Point Pleasant Pool Duals on Friday and Saturday. Maybe the picture will be a bit more clear after that tournament. My team although very young with only 3 8th graders starting (4 8th graders total - 24 kids return next year) are looking forward to the tough competition. We may get spanked but good competition only make you better.

FROM: THE FALL-GUY:
I just wanted to get my two cents in regarding high school wrestlers to watch this year. One of, if not the best wrestler fans should have their eye on this year in the 152lb weight class is Tyler Consolidated's Chad Snider. Snider is 14-0 thus far in the season, putting away such opponents as Terry Childers(exhibition), Dillon Hashman(12-4 before pinning), and Brad Nicka (15-0 tech fall). Snider is a total package this year of both technical skill and strength. He will face Tucker Brown of Cameron Wednesday night in a tri-meet with cameron and wahama. Call me crazy but i believe this will be a match between the top 2 finishers in the state.

The teachers from our school were unbelievable with food for our hospitality areas (workers and wrestlers) and they also served as gate workers. Special thanks to John Parks who helped us on Friday night and the fabulous Schiefer family who scored and kept things running smoothly. Our parents are the best ever, working concessions and our hospitality areas and the community sponsors involved, as always, were very generous. We couldn't have been finished as early as we were without the Al Culverhouse, Allan Morris, Tyler Crislip and Goose Culverhouse who kept score and blood time. An added extra was our CWVAC Championship cheerleaders who helped the entire day. Many cudos to Spencer coach, Wayne Jarvis, who made sure that each wrestler had as many matches as possible, and helped us assure that "every" wrestler got to wrestle. And lastly, thanks to our super athletic director, Kim West, who helps make coaching BCMS athletes a pleasure.

comments: I'd like to express thanks to all coaches and wrestlers at the Braxton County Middle School Invitational. The tournament couldn't have been successful without the "on-site" help of Kim West, our super A.D., Pam Shafer, Florence Canter, Debbie, Danny and Lindsay Facemire, the Rollyson, Moore and Ralphsnyder families, Terri Crislip, Wanda Bender, and any others who helped during the tournament when I was occupied elsewhere. I'm most appreciative of the Schiefer family - thank gosh for Susan - and my great table workers, Al Culverhouse, Allan Morris, Tyler Crislip, Goose Culverhouse, and the CWVAC Championship cheerleaders from Braxton who ran, bopped, and were just simply great. Braxton County Middle School has the best wrestling support staff ever in our teachers who worked the gate, contributed to our wrestlers' hospitality area and our coaches/workers hospitality area.

comments: South Wrestling is here to stay. Plan on buying many more shirts in Huntington with the South brand on it. These boys are an elite unit that will not be stopped, and deservedly so. South wrestling starts a lot earlier than high school. Many of these boys have been bred into wrestling and have been able to taste a state championship, or three or four, since they were but five and six years old. To these boys, this is life. They give up so many things each wrestling season, personal lives, hobbies, sometimes girlfriends, to do what they love. Our coaching staff gives up as well. We have many coaches with young children and wifes or are tireless in there effort. When Fairmont and PHS and the other teams that you wish to see win a state title wrestle the caliber of teams and go to the elite tournaments such as Va Duels, Ironman Tourney), maybe we can call them deservant of recognition. But not until. Don't hate us because we dominate. We are wrestling in West Virginia, and we are here to stay.

I guess you are looking at the big name schools in the state. It isn't to you personally but you have to look at Elkins. They have a few returning starters this year and some new faces as freshmen this year as well. It seems everyone is forgetting Ray Linger. State Qualifier last year from Elkins. Don't put him out yet this year either. He's moved to 189 and is looking good out there. Good Luck to all in the Tiger Land.

South really stepped up the intensity in this match with Osuna-Cotto overweight and forfeiting the 103 class and Matt Bosley out with an injury. The feature match of the night was Nathan Pickens moving up to 171 to challenge Chris Daggett."Pick" was awesome as he built a 7-0 lead before hitting what looked like a spladdle to pin Daggett in the 2nd period.Anyone looking forward to wrestling Mr. Pickens better bring some help ! To the Varner twins, put away all the distractions and make wrestling your priority. To Jake Pyle, welcome back to the team and good luck in your new roll. Coach Varner, good luck in your vision of restoring the Riders to the way they were when you were in your glory. Putts, take care of my boys and give Vince the tools and make sure he knows how to use them. I would also like to congratulate the Oak Glen Bears on a great job at Brooke and a personal cograts to Derrick Stickle for his win over Daggett.
