From: smarter OG alumni
comments: In response to OG alumni picking the 99-00 team as the best, they must not have seen the 98-99 team. It had top quality wrestlers from top to bottom. Sure the point they made about placing 14 at states sounds good in theory, but if you match the two line ups together the 98-99 team would win. It wouldnt be a landslide but they would win non-the-less.

comments: great job to all the wrestlers from jefferson at the james wood duals , codie gustines 8-0 , colton gustines 8-0 , corie gustines 6-2, Zane carroll 7-1(alot of improvement this year), chapman stepped up as well with a 5-3 record. great job to every1 else on teh j-high squad your a young team but if you keep workin hard good things will come (these results are from the duals only not season)

Advancing to the semi finals are jake hayes, brandon rader(will face ashtin primus...defeated him 6-2 at the beast), Lou thomas, and ryan dearman winning in OT. lindamood also fell in the quarters 2-1. I had to go to the duals after all there is wrestling going on. Pool 1 had several great match-ups. First round Smith (Brooke) has Turnbull on his back, but the ref won't give up the pin...
Brooke good as a team down low, so is Wheeling Park. Shaw (Brooke) gets an OT win 5-3 over Gerasimovich (Morgantown). What a match, Gerasimovich gets called for locked hands with 10 seconds to go in the 3rd to even it up at 3-3. University some solid kids. Garvin (Morgantown) looked good. Lets face it Regions 1 AAA is where the men wrestle and the others scrap for 5th and 6th.

From: Oak Glenn & Weir consolidation?
comments: The best thing that could happen with OG/Weir consolidation would be to the football unit. Weir has only a couple (if that)of wrestlers developing that could assist the OG wrestling team. OG wrestling stands on its own.

comments: To Just Wondering from Oak Glen:

Although all the teams from 98-2003 have been amazing, I would have to pick the 1999-2000 team as the best due to the simple fact that ALL 14 wrestlers placed at states. Among those 14 we had 5 Champs and 2 Runner-ups!!!! I think that is amazing. 99-00 Champs: Zack Zubay, Eric Noel, Derrick Stickles, Philip Belville, & Joey Caughey.
99-00 Runner-ups: Matt Holdsworth & Greg Six
I would also have to note out the 2000-2001 team for having 10 wrestlers place and among those were 6 Champs and 1 Runner-up!!! 6 Champs has been the most in one season for Oak Glen I believe. 00-01 Champs: Eric Noel, Kyle Eckleberry, Derrick Stickles, Ronnie Hebrock, Philip Belville, & Joey Caughey. 00-01 Runner-up: Gaelen Lowers

I must say I love Oak Glen Wrestling. Go get 'em Bears!!!

comments: mr wrestlnigIII- i like those picks, i dont think hayes would get pinned by turnbull, he did wrestle A easter to losses by dec. last year 4-3 and 7-1. smith and shaw would be a good match to see. delligatti, havent heard of him, was he out last year? lindamood is improving though, he'll surprise us at states. I'd like to see tominack and thomas go at it just because lou had a tough time beating starsick and tominack pinned him. dont know of any HWT's that could beat dearman right now. we should stick shane smith at 160. and walters would beat tracewell at 171. but good picks.

comments: I am sure it is against SSAC rules but since we in Wood County are very proud (rightfully so) I would like to see a Wood County all star team take on a state all star team. It would kinda be like the Dapper Dan in western Pa. They wrestle against the whole country.(granted they usually get smoked) Wouldnt this be fun for the state to say shut up Wood County we beat you. My line up their foes and results are as follows:

103 Stilgenbauer or Kellar(wrestle off) loses to Shaw from Brooke State 3 WC 0
112 Townsend PSHS loses to Easter Nitro by pin state 9 WC 0
119 Hayes PHS loses to Turnbull Univ by pin state 15 WC 0
125 Shyver PHS beats Garvin Motown by major dec state 15 WC 4
130 Rader PHS pins your choice State 15 WC 10
135 Au Smith PSHS toss up to Shaw from Brooke Shaw is tough State 18 WC 10
140 Osuna-Cotta or Ea Smith(i know hes at 45) in a lot closer match then most think loses to Smith from Ripley State 21 WC 10
145 Litton PHS beats Richey JM State 21 WC 13
152 Norman/Munday PSHS wins a close one against Gustines JefCo State 21 WC 16
160 Norman/Munday beats Davis from Brooke or Runyon from Hunt State 21 WC 19
171 Walters PSHS pins take your pick WC 25 State 21
189 Delligatti FS majors Lindamood PHS WC 25 State 25
215 Thomas PHS majors Tominack WH park WC 29 State 25
275 Dearman PHS beats your pick WC 32 State 25

Now I realize this is a pipe dream but its fun to speculate. Also I only used AAA teams because I dont follow AA/A much. Those wrestlers would add even more intrigue to the match but dont forget we would also get to add Smith, Tracewell, and company from Wiliamstown. Dont get all upset I was just pointing out how much fun this would be Im sure there are many arguements about the state team but thats the point. Also wouldnt a Team Dual Championship and a dual of the AAA champs versus the AA/A champs be awesome also.

comments: After a couple weeks of action things in the eastern panhandle are starting to solidify as far as rankings. Just wanted to put my early season AAA rankings of the EP on here. And yes I know a couple guys in the weight classes haven't met yet and some people may change weight but for now this is how I see it:

103: 1. Haislip-Musselman, 2. Gustines-Jefferson 3. Roberts-Hedgesville
112: 1. Shetler-Hedgesville 2. Barrett-Musselman
119: 1. Barrett- Musselman 2. Judd- Martinsburg 3. Chapman- Jefferson 4. Zimmerman-Hedgesville
125: 1. Carrell-Jefferson 2. Miner-Musselman 3. Miller-Hedgesville
130: 1. Smith-Jefferson 2. Grim-Hedgesville 3. Shore-Musselman
135: 1. Gustines-Jefferson 2. Conner-Martinsburg 3. Bott-Musselman 4. Richardson-Hedgesville
140: 1. Everhart-Hedgesville 2. Whittington-Musselman 3. Felix-Jefferson (although when Barbour for Martinsburg comes back I would put him 1.)
145: 1. Conner-Martinsburg 2. Maness-Jefferson 3. Foltz-Hedge! sville 4. Kees-Musselman
152: 1. Gustines-Jefferson 2. Foltz-Hedgesville 3. Jarvis-Martinsburg
160: 1. Sella-Hedgesville 2. Quinn- Martinsburg 3. Lancaster-Jefferson 4. Harmon-Musselman
171: 1. Ammons-Hedgesville 2. Baker-Musselman 3. Bateman-Jefferson 4. Echols-Martinsburg
189: 1. Young-Hedgesville 2. Aberegg-Musselman 3. Payne-Jefferson
215: 1. Nicholson-Hedgesville 2. Pruitt-Musselman

Teams (Duals) -
1. Hedgesville
2. Musselman
3. Jefferson
4. Martinsburg

Again I realize some people are changing weights and some haven't wrestled yet but again this is just my opinion at this point in the season. Now how about someone from Marion county putting on a ranking of the best on the westside of region 2.

comments: Just wanted to congratulate the eagles on their recent successes. 4th at Berkeley Springs Inv, 2nd at the Sherando Duals, 1st at the Berkeley Co. Championships. The eagles are wrestling well and need to keep up the intensity. Also want to congratulate former BC Bear Dustin Haislip from Musselman who is wrestling incredibly well knocking off the #1 guy in MD AA Casey Kamp and then knocking off a stud from PA in Rudy Chelednik. Haislip is wrestling like a champ and I can't wait to see what he does at states. People should start looking out for Musselman with the freshmen they have this year in the next couple years they may be the team to beat in the region. Anyway good luck to the eagles at the wheeling park duals. Not sure if work will allow me to get up there but if I'm not there physically you know I will be spiritually. Hopefully hedgesville will get to meet regional rivals North Marion, East Fairmont, and Fairmont Sr. up there. Wish hedgesville would wrestle these teams in duals during the season as they are regional opponents but hopefully things will match up at wheeling to get those matches. Anyway again congrats and good luck.

comments: Weir and Oak glen will be a nice team. I imagine they will be a good sized AAA school. I wonder if Shaw will coach the new school. I imagine he would want to go after a AAA title after that nice run in the late 80's early 90's when he came close five or six years in a row, before they went to AA.

comments: Forget about creatine. Zero well controlled studies(performance or safety) have been conducted on high school athletes during their season of performance. Good hard work is the best training. In an age where it is known that other performance increasing agents are illegal and dangerous, I would be suspect of any physician or coach that said it was ok or recommended it. It should not be recommended period. Too many things are going on in teenager bodies and couple that with proper over the counter drug use, and or presciption drug use and or misuse, and illegal drug misuse and we have a tragedy.

December 26, 2003
comments: Hey Doc, when will the rankings of wrestlers be put up?
Editor's note: We usually don't get to that until the middle of January, no sooner than Winners Choice and Braxton Big 16. Yeah, I know, we would all like to see individual rankings sooner. However, lots of wrestlers are still moving from weight to weight, etc, and we just haven't got into the January tournaments yet.

comments: TO: wrestler with a question.
I wanted to take some time to respond to your question regarding creatine usage. I am not a doctor, but I would echo the response of the editor when he told you to talk to your coach and doctor before you take it. Creatine occurs naturally in your body both in your liver and after you eat meat. Many people question its positive effects when taken in supplemental form. In addition, in an article I read on www.webmd.com, both the FDA and the NCAA raised concerns about the supplement due to reports of "muscle cramping, strains, dehydration, stomach problems, nausea, and seizures in those who use it." When an athlete (LIKE A WRESTLER) uses the supplement, he retains water, which could intensify any of these symptoms if the athlete (WRESTLER) looses large amounts of water in practice or during a competition. (check http://my.webmd.com/content/article/29/1728_67896.htm?lastselectedguid={5FE84E90-BC77-4056-A91C-9531713CA348} .) Long term concerns included possible kidney failure. In short, ANY WRESTLER who wishes to take creatine should consult a doctor before taking it. That goes for ANY supplement. Because supplements are not considered a food or a drug, they are not regulated by the FDA. Diet and work out the right way and you will prevail. You don't need this extra junk!

Where is Seth Young that wrestled so well against Smith (Rip) at this year? Good luck to South @ Graham and back home next weekend with Williamstown and Oak Glen. I think it's a shame Oak Glen is traveling all the way down to Pburg for a dual with South and not a tri with both South and Williamstown. Maybe there's still time to arrange it, I know that alot of South fans sure would like to see that match, and Will and OG should want to see it, too.

Thanks and BTW, I hope that "Wrestling Fan" is not trying to start a controversy over the Munday and Norman thing. Wrestleoffs will determine who wrestles 160# and best of luck to who has to cut to 152#.

*** I know @ 160 I have both Munday and Norman from South, they both deserve to be ranked. It would be nice to see one of these boys drop to 152 to help solidify their line-up. ***

I realize throughout the course of the year that these wrestlers will change weights and we will have new guys come on to the scene.

I would like some input and feedback on changes and happenings throughout the state... Good luck to everyone... Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year.

The win over Cabell Midland was a good one and the loss to Ripley was a close one. The loss to a fine squad from Shady Spring is nothing to worry about either, they put a loss on Ripley's record and I'm sure they'll beat a few more AAA teams before the season is over. Keep up the good work and good luck the rest of the season.

comments: I've just learned that Mike Simms from Cameron will not be wrestling this year due to an injury he recieved during the Cameron/Moorefield football playoff game. This is somewhat of a blow to Cameron's line up due to the fact that Mike, last year weighed in under 189 and ended up wrestling 215 and won most of those matches. It's a shame he cannot show the rest of the state what he could be capable of. Best wished to Mike on a healthy finish with his shoulder. I'm sure the team and the community is behind him also.

In 11th grade he wrestled 140 again and weighed in 137-138 all year, just ask any wrestler that wrestled 140 this meant he gave up 5# after the first day. He had a good match with smith and lost in OT. Then had 2 bad calls for 3rd and finished 4th. This year after football he weighed in at 137. Makes sense to wrestle 135. That is what he will be wrestling this year at states. He won't be running from anyone and never has I've known this young man a long time. Good luck to him. Win states this year you deserve it.

comments: takedown 242, there was an obvious mistake made in adding team points at the Point Tournament. It will become clear when we see the results, but somehow Western Greenbrier was mistakenly counted as having 33 more points than they actually had. I can tell you that the order of finish was:
1)Point Middle 135
2) East Fairmont 126
3)Western Greenbrier 122.
4) Spencer 101
5) Cammack 71, and so on.
It seems like one of those awkward moments where the finishers were announced, trophies were given out, then everyone could see fairly easily by the numbers that a mistake was made. I'm sure it has been corrected as best as it could be. We stayed late too. We noticed East Fairmont discussing scores with the tournament directors at the end, but we went ahead and left because we new our score was correct and it didn't directly affect us. When we got home and looked at the tally sheet that breaks down score by weight class, it was obvious what had happened. Nobody's perfect all the time. This doesn't take away from the fact that there was some quality wrestling throughout the two days. There were alot of bout sheets crossing the tables, and when you consider the high school tournament was going on in the first half of each day,...wow.

These two warriors go into battle much the same way that all other grapplers do. However, they are able to battle where others would not dare. They battle in total darkness, where they can not see their opponet but have to react to movement from feel. Yet they are not afraid they battle on to the end and win loose or draw they return to do it again. Who are these two grapplers that inspire me everytime they set foot on the mat? Their names are Aaron Preece from Camack and Aaron Spearse from Ripley. Also, to East Fairmont and Western Greenbrier, your teams were outstanding. To all the other teams and coaches at the Point Olympic Pool Tournament, great job. As far as I'm aware, there was a high level of sportsmanship exhibited throughout the tournament. To the Spencer team and fans, I'd like to say thanks for a great job, too. To place fourth right behind Western Greenbrier was a good effort for us. We aren't where we want to be yet. There's hard work ahead to improve our technique and conditioning, but I was pleased with our level of aggressiveness. I'm proud of our work so far. Let's keep it up.

comments: With regard to the weight class issue it is possible for a kid to wrestle 171 and then drop to 152 prior to the certification date of 12/23. The wrestler can even weigh in at 171. After the 23rd a wrestler may only weigh in one weight class above certification, without forfeiting the lower weight class.

For example a 103 pounder may weigh in at 112 and still be certified at 103.

But remember that a wrestler may wrestle up one weight class from what he/she weighed in. So, for example the 103 pounder could wrestle 119 and still be eligible, as long as he/she weighed in at 112.

I hope this clears up the confusion.

comments: According to "Making the Call" on December 6, 2002
Q: If a wrestler can move up at anytime, can he also move down at anytime?
A: Before December 23rd (the certification date) a wrestler can compete at any weight he is eligible to wrestle. After the certification date, he can wrestle no lower than his certified weight, say 103 pounds. However, should the wrestler compete at 119 pounds in January, he has now recertified himself at 112 pounds and can go no lower.

Our characters in the game are based on real existing fighters, that means we use some pics and we make a 3D-fighter which looks like the real one (including the "real fighter's" techniques, moves ...). We want to have a wide variety of fighters and fighting styles in our game from all over the world. They have not to be famous or professional fighters. We still searching for a "real" wrestler for the game. In the last months we wrote a lot of postings to martial-art and wrestling-forums but we only received a small feedback. Editor's note: Sorry to hear about the injury. For the record, the term "kicked out" does not appear on this page. Re-checking the official results of the Max Horz tournament, as posted on the scores pages - there was a double forfeit in the consolation semifinals with the indication DQ. Neither wrestler finished the tournament, and there was no 4th or 6th place finisher. Apologies to Mr. Lowe if results have been misrepresented.

comments: I just wanted to briefly speak to Iron and the rest of the PHS fans who attend this site. You all have a great team, and due to the youth, will have a great team for the next few years.

However, I think it is very stupid of you to tell the South fans that are on here to stop living in the past, when all you do is rant and rave about the ONE state championship you have garnered in last year's tournament. Last year's state tournament is over and done with, so stop living with it, and tell your boys to cowboy up so that they can try to bring one home this year. NEVER underestimate the team from Parkersburg South or from anywhere else in the state, because all it takes is a midseason injury to Rader, Shyver or Thomas, and the tides could seriously change in the state of WV.

Also, I would like to post a few "predictions" of sorts for the way that some individuals from Parkersburg will place:

103: Stilgenbauer (P) finishes 5th, Kellar (S) 6th
112: Hayes (P) finishes 4th
119: McCray (S) finishes 2nd
125: Shyver (P) wins, Kelley (S) 3rd
130: Rader (P) wins, Porter (S) 2nd
135: Shaun Smith (S) 1st
140: Osuna-Cotto (S) 3rd
145: Litton (P) finishes 2nd, Smith (S) 4th
152: Norman (S) wins, Dowler (P) 6th
160: Munday (S) 5th
171: Walters (S) wins
189: Radcliffe (S) 4th, Lindamood 5th
215: Thomas (P) wins
HWT: Dearman (P) 2nd, Dorton (S) 5th

Some are upsets, I understand. But through out the course of the season, we will find out how this will shape up. I believe that the young Patriots are more of a force than the Big Reds are willing to admit to, but I could be wrong. February and March are where these really count. I hope everyone has fun tearing my predictions apart. LOL.

comments: A clarification for all Jr High Coaches:

The WVSSAC send out rules addressing both Varsity and Jr High with the rule books and a notice requiring coaches to attend the WVSSAC rules clinic. In a past forum Coach LeMasters stated that the junior high had 14 weigh in plus a conference or regional tournament. I then addressed Coach LeMasters comments with my own two cents. Heads up to Coach LeMasters for finding out a mistake printed in the Interscholastic. I too called the WVSSAC and was told that they are following what was printed in the Interscholastic. All Jr Highs in the State have 14 WEIGH INS PLUS A CONFERENCE OR REGIONAL TOURNAMENT.

Lay coaches may not have this information because the Interscholastic is sent to the principals and may never be seen by the coaches. My hat off to Coach LeMaster and to Doc Miller. Without this forum many of the coaches throughout the state would not have information beneficial to their teams.

The youth programs have grown and high school popularity of WV wrestling continues to grow by evidence of WV Mat website. The concept of a WV middle school states evolved from what appears to be a need allowing middle school wrestlers to be showcased separately, similiar to HS states.

Coach Peters and others -
I called the WVSSAC and spoke with Butch Powell who checked with Mike Hayden. Since it was printed as 14 EXCLUSIVE of the county tournaments in the Interscholastic and that is what they sent to us, we are allowed 14 + the county or regional this year but next year it will most likely be 14 period because that is how it reads in the officaial rule book. As coaches, I think we need to try to POLITELY convince them to allow us 14 + the counties in the future because the length of the season allows for that and still have at least one to two weekends off. Just my .02 worth. But anyway that is the way it is as of now straight from the WVSSAC. Pat, you really shook me up! I was envisoning dropping out of WSAZ or something!

comments: Jim LeMaster.. Where do you get your information, is there a SSAC rulebook that you are quoting from. I know your not allowed to coach in the off season, but you are allowed contact with them. You make it sound like if I say hi to a wrestler in the offseason he is ineligible. You must have a off season conditiong program where you lift weights and run. Also i find it hard to believe that the SSAC would do all this punishing to the athlete and nothing to the coach. This is for the kids, don't punish them for wanting to get better. Sounds to me like the girl from CM had a easy case to win if she took it to court. I know I would have.
Editor's note: Against my better judgement, I'll wade in on this. You don't pull on superman's cape. You don't spit in the wind. You don't pull the mask off the ole' Lone Ranger, and you don't mess around with the WVSSAC.

comments: I recently read the AA-A team poll and yes, like everybody else who ever gets on here,, I have some comments. Number 1, how can Williamstown be #2 given they forfeit about 3 or 4 weight classes and not even had a match until after the poll was released. Secondly, how are my Dragons #3? They went over to Berkeley Springs and barely missed finishing 2nd by 2 points, beating every other WV team there (Nitro, BU, Hedgesville, Musselman, Wirt, Jefferson, Frankfort, Martinsburg and Berkeley). Also the Dragons had state runner-up Isaac Stewart out of the line-up, our 125 Hughes get injured, our 103 pound class vacated for now and our 140 pounder get 5th at 152, pinning Corie Gustines and Troy Foltz twice. Granted, had these boys came in more disciplined, I think there would be no question that they would have been close to defeating DeMatha Catholic, which oh yeah by the way has 5 seeded wrestlers at Beast of The East this coming weekend.

Anyways, it should be a great region 1 tournament once again and in the first time that I can remember, all 3 region 1 powers will actually wrestle each other at least once by the time regionals roll around, as Williamstown has scheduled duals with OG and Cameron and Oak Glen and Cameron annually meet up at the gigantic OVAC extravaganza. I would say we'll know who is going to have the big guns after that!

comments: A question for officials, coaches, fans: The new mat poll question reminded me of this discussion about riding that came up earlier. It is my understanding, after discussing the topic of stalling with an official, and it is my belief still today, that a wrestler is expected to be trying to improve his position whether he's on top or bottom. Bottom man should be doing more than simply maintaining a base. Good wrestlers know how to look busy without taking risks. The top wrestler is also obligated to work for a fall. Over and over again, we've been warned to get off the hips, to get out and get busy or we're just holding on. I believe the top man is stalling if he is just maintaining control. The only exception to this would be during the 2nd overtime with choice of position. The top man should do nothing but hold on and do no more than is necessary to win. That's what a rideout is, basically. Does anyone see it differently?

I don't really like the idea of counting riding time for anything. It could lead to more riding time. I don't want to see my wrestlers out there wallowing when they ought to be working for a pin, and I don't think anyone else would either. A good leg rider could easily pick up riding time and not really be trying anything. I have concerns. I don't think it's necessary. Personally, I like to see wrestlers work on their feet if they can't turn their opponent.

However currently they have maybe one or two kids who have wrestled. They would have a decent coach though with Coach Tennant. He coached Catholic before and was an assistant at PHS for a while. Im not sure if he wrestled but I imagine if they did have a team they would be disclipined and in very good shape.

Parkersburg Catholic used to have a wrestling team. I don't think they can find a coach or no one wants to wrestle for them anymore and if i am not mistaken if you are in the 9th grade there you can wrestle for phs.

comments: Parkersburg Catholic did have a wrestling, but lack of interest it was dropped. If you know anything about that school you would know that they are only about basketball.

comments: Volunteer... Your right Parkersburg Catholic should have a wrestling team and here is how they should do it. Danny Tennant needs to recruit the PHS coaches to Catholic and get all the wrestlers from PHS, South, And Williamstown to transfer to catholic. Then get the best kids around the state to movve there to go to PCHS. On top of that recruit a few all-Americans from across the USA and what you have is a top 3 Program in the United States year in and year out. Right here in good ole WV.

comments: Given the strong youth and high school programs in the greater Parkersburg area, I was wondering why Parkersburg Catholic does not have a wrestling team. I know they have a rather small enrollment but they do have enough to field a good football team. Even if they could not fill all the weight classes, they would probably have a decent tournament team. I'm sure they have students that wrestled in the rec league.

comments: In regards to the question of a middle school state tournament: This sounds OK to me, but I doubt the WVSSAC will sponsor it. The Tri-State Middle School Championship was started as a way to provide this kind of arena to recognize specifically middle schools, but many schools can't or don't attend. This tournament, held at Pt. Pleasant the past few years, is available to go somewhere else provided the school has the gym space for at least 4 mats and the community has ample hotel accommodations for this two-day tournament. We, at Spencer, would love to hold it, but we don't have the hotels for the number of people that will need to stay overnight. Coach Darst and the other people who run the tournaments at Point do a very good job. Until another good location is found, I don't mind going there every year. Good as this tournament may be, it is still not officially recognized as any kind of state tournament.

As for the WSAZ Tournament, many of us middle schools have a love-hate relationship with it. This is a commentary more about us coaches than this tournament. It is notorious for kids moving down in weight class with no evidence of ever having made base weight. This is not widespread, but we have been expected to police ourselves to a certain extent and to do the right thing. In addition, despite far outnumbering jr. highs, middle schools still don't receive team trophies to 3rd place as jr. highs do. I know this is a little thing, but good gracious, look at the huge number of middle schools entered compared to jr. high and freshmen teams. If you were to award the top 10%, middle school team place would be at least to 3rd and jr. high and freshmen teams might only get 1 place each.

Now, before I start to sound too unappreciative, let me say that I have entered this tournament the past several years. Often, we are able to be competitive and have had many place-winners, so I do appreciate the opportunity for my team to wrestle tough competition. Getting a trophy is not our motivation anyway. Some people might wonder what difference it makes if there's a middle school state tournament. I don't guess it does. When kids are finished with their respective school schedules, they can just go to youth tournaments and the Jr. State Tournament if they want.

Every year weight classes change for what reason i dont know. I have been in this sport for several years and the most damage you have done is to the Junior High division weight classes. Back several years ago it was the same weight classes every year and things went well!! I can see why people get upset with this tournament and not return. I have coached kids at both Junior State Tournaments.I will have to say if this continues you will see less and less support for this tournament. It would be good for the two Junior State Tournaments get togeather and hold one every other year at their location. This seems fair and is good for the kids!!

comments: In regards to a middle school state tournament . . .
WV Middle school are limited to 14 weigh in points not counting their County or Regional tournaments. Any event with more than 4 teams counts 2 weigh in points and duals and tri's count one. We have all our weigh in's filled as do most schools. As coaches we are not allowed to have any off season contact with our wrestlers. If we were to coach them at such an event after the regular season, they would become ineligible for the next season if they are returning to our team. Also they are not allowed to represent their school or wear any school insignia when competing in open tournaments either in season or out. They must also have written aproval from the school principal and ifthe school team has an event that day they MUST attend it even if they are JV and not wrestling. Harsh, you bet but that's the way the rules are to the best of my knowledge. Take away all that stuff and you essentially have Pee Wee States. It's a shame but the WSAZ is as close to a middle school state tournament as we will ever get due to the iron hand of the WVSSAC. It was a great idea but there are a lot of roadblocks. I was once cautioned by the WVSSAC for attending Jr. States to watch my son who was on my middle school team wrestle. I did not coach him (Ken Chertow's school was in our home town then and Ken did.) but I did provide transportation, etc. and it still was ruled off season contact. Someone still unknown turned me in to the WVSSAC. The are a great governing body but can be real sticklers about rules such as this. A girl in a well publicized case from Cabell Midland was ruled ineligible because she played at a softball game at her church - no set teams - players switched off every couple of innings, no score kept, not a real team at all but she lost a year of eligibility. Just a word of caution, tread carefully and check everything out thoroughly before staging such an event.

I havent checked out the Reno TOC yet but good luck to both teams. Have a safe flight south fans and stay away from the moonlight bunny ranch.

comments: Oak Glen 3rd? Let's get serious. This group of young kids that is in the Oak Glen lineup right now has the potential to be better than Oak Glen's unstoppable '98 team. They only have 2 seniors in the lineup, but they are still a great tournament team. They have the possibility to have at least 4-7 champs in every tournament they wrestle in.(Brandon Miller, Jessie Mahan-ranked amongst best sophomores in the nation and the first freshman to place at states in Oak Glen history, Brennon Chambers-was a starter as a freshman but had to miss his sophomore year due to an injury, Rhett Northcraft-ranked in the nation amongst sophomores and was also a freshman that placed at the state tournament last year, Garret Railing-one of two seniors in the lineup, placed last year at states, Chris Stevens, Cody Potts-once he gets into shape he will be a force to be reckoned with, he missed regionals and states last year due to an injury at the end of the season, and probably would have easliy won the state title last year as a sophomore). I guess when you don't have a program like we at Oak Glen have, you just don't understand. I'm sure that Parkursburg and South both know that it doesn't matter how many kids you lose to graduation. All that matters is that you have kids waiting and preparing for their shot at being a varsity wrestler. I know for a fact that Oak Glen does that year in and year out. Oak Glen had a kid by the name of Andy Wharton a few years ago that was on JV his whole junior year until Rob Lamb got hurt. After rob got hurt, Andy wrestled in the regional tournament, which he WON, and then went on to make it to the State Finals that year and place 2nd in the state. You can't really judge a team by who they LOST last year, but rather by who the HAVE this year. Good luck guys, you know that all you have to do is believe in yourselves and it doesn't matter what anyone thinks. You can do it...7 WAS HEAVEN, BUT 8 WILL BE GREAT!!!

comments: Judging by some of the opinions expressed here, the rest of the state teams outside of Parkersburg may as well just give up. I suspect that won't happen. People are going to work as hard as ever to prepare for the state tournament and the opportunity to be a champion. One thing that bugs me a little bit is how some people too easily dismiss the value of wrestling people at of just above their level and mistakenly equate getting blown with making a team better-prepared. Unless you are already pretty darn good (PHS, PSHS, HHS, and a few others) and can at least stay in the match for awhile, a wrestler isn't learning or getting prepared for a thing. If you're not careful, you could just reinforce any thoughts of self-doubt that may be creeping into a wrestler's head. Whatever a team's skill level, I believe it is critical that a kid have some taste of success along the way to show for his hard work. Opinions like that from Maryland Observer make it sound so simple- everybody just wrestle Blair Academy.

A lot of teams around have barely enough kids to field a team. I don't imagine they'll be flocking to the mat when they find out they'll be humiliated. You have to have a good youth base and work up to this kind of schedule. For most of us, from year to year, there are plenty of people right here around us who can kick our kids' ***** without having to travel out of state to get it done. The top teams like those from Parkersburg should also recognize their important role when the up-and-coming teams from AAA and even some AA want to schedule them. They aren't wanting your reserves or B Team - they're trying to wrestle up and better-prepare their kids. The big guy doesn't necessarily help himself alot by this, but some of it is necessary. Otherwise, how would teams ever wrestle tougher competition if the "big guy" won't accommodate? I'm proud of all those teams in our state who are working hard to improve every day. Good luck to you.

comments: I agree with the Maryland Observer. Look at Parkersburg and Pburg South's schedules. They are pretty tough, and that is the only reason that those teams can compete on a national level. When you drive north a few hours and see the level of competition raise like in PA you see the difference from PA wrestling and WV wrestling. Feeder and Pee-wee programs are not enough to get good as some fans think. Wrestle like they do in PA, and go find your competition. You don't get better by not wrestling better teams!!!! Good job on the Parkersburg schools for realizing this.

comments: It has been amusing to read comments from the fans of the AAA high schools other than Parkersburg and Parkersburg South. When are you all going to learn that you not win a state championship or you will never consistently defeat either one of those schools in wrestling. All you have to do is look at their schedules and you will understand what I mean. Nobody elses schedules even comes close. It is their strength of schedule that prepares them for the state championship. I think Parkersburg probably has the toughest schedule in the country. It maybe second only to Blair. If you think your high school will win a state championship in West Virginia you are either dreaming or blowing smoke.

This won't be the case at the state tournament. i feel it's really just between phs and south, which is sad. However all teams that were originally in it could not do it that weekend. So he is in need of teams to fill the slots vacated by the other teams. As it stands now it will only be Saturday 12/20 and each team will get 5 matches if he picks up 2 more teams. If he could pick up 4 or more teams he could extend it back to it's original 2-day format and 7-8 matches. Any teams needing to make up some matches lost due to recent weather are to contact him as soon as possible. The team cost will be $150.00. First thanks for the kind mention of our program at Milton Middle. In regards to your comments about East Fairmont their kids coming out of PeeWee are superlative. Coach Shane Eakle is a great motivator and it has been a blast to coach against his teams the last few years. They are good technicians and tough hard nosed kids but also a class act on and off the mat. Also don't forget the feeder system at Point Pleasant and the great job Dave Darst does not only coaching his team but running some of the finest tournaments that I have ever attended. Both of these programs as well as the fine feeder programs in Wood Co. and around the state have the key ingredient - numbers. Many middle school kids start and have never seen a match. I am thankful for the 3-5 kids on average I get from Milton's Pee Wee program but would be more thankful for 15-20! Many of my kids start out cold and don't know a half nelson from a Willie Nelson! If we can get them to come out and get their hands raised a time or two they will be hooked!

Here are some suggestions that we have used to build interest at our school. I have 40+ kids come out each year our school is around 600 kids. and now the kids want to be wrestlers - not basketball players. Perhaps some of these may help others.

1. Send or distribute newsletters to your returning or prospective wrestlers. Kids love to see their name in print! and . . . when you say you expect great things from them in the coming season and list all the things they are doing to get better such as who went to what open tournaments, camps, etc. it helps to keep them interested all year. It also lets them know they are wanted and expected to be successful.

2. Make a highlight video of this years matches and show some clips over the school TV system if it has one. If not set up a TV and VCR in the cafeteria during lunch or break time. Make it flashy and fast paced with the kids kind of music in the backround. They'll come to see what all this is about. If you can't make a video of your own, most colleges make these and will gladly sell you one very cheap as a recruiting tool. I have several of Ohio States and they are great! Lots of parents love to do this kind of stuff!

3. Encourage each of your wrestlers to bring at least one buddy to the first meeting and introduce them to the sport.

4. Bookmark GREAT sites such as this one on your schools computers so the kids can find out info.

5. Get your cheerleader sponsor on your side. Very few schools have cheerleaders at their matches in WV but it is common other states. Guys appreciate a little female interest.

6. Put countdown signs before the season up like " Your championship season begins in x number of days"

7. Order team T-Shirts - one of the best sources I have ever found is The Color Creek. They custom design some very unique shirts for our team at very reasonable prices. Have your returning wrestlers wear these often in the weeks prior to the season's start.

8. Contact former wrestlers in your community for support. Even if they didn't wrestle for your school, the love for the sport is still there. You'd be amazed how much they can help if you only ask. Also you might ask some former wrestlers who were very successful to speak to your recruiting meeting.

9. Have your wrestlers put on a demonstration clinic/ match in gym classes or at noon. Better yet at your feeder elementary schools. What P.E. teacher wouldn't love for you to teach their class one day for them. Even if you can't wrestle in gym, you can show what the sport is like.

10. Visit football practice and let the football players know there is life after the season. Every one knows that wrestlers make better football players.

11. Try your best to get a PeeWee program going in your area. The value is incredible. Perhap you could donate some old headgear, etc. to get them started.

12. Establish a shoe bank. Ask your departing wrestlers to donate shoes they have outgrown. Run them through the washer and hand them out to those who need them when practice starts. Some kids would like to wrestle but can't afford it. I have 60+ pairs of shoes in good conition. Parents also love it when all they need is a pair of socks and we provide everything else.

13. Find a former wrestler or fan who is an MD to do a group physical and weight cert. for the whole team, perhaps at a reduced rate. Some kids want to wrestle, but their parents won't pay for the physical or are unable to.

14. Ask your school librarian to subscribe to USA Wrestling, etc. and keep them in the library for kids who are interested. If the school won't buy it, perhaps a former wrestler or parent will donate a tax deductible subscription.

15. Keep as many kids as humanly possible. Some guys who are terrible in the beginning get to be excellect wrestlers through hard work.

16. Invite the faculty of your school to be honored guests at a home match. Do a short clinic so they will understand the sport. They will feel honored and will go out of their way to help your program and have a new respect for your wrestlers. Our Reading teacher has her class read a novel about wrestling and offers extra credit to kids who attend our first scrimmage match.

17. Take digital photos of mathces and make a slide show CD for each wrestler at the end of the season. Easy and cheap

18. Put together a Mat Memories book of the season for each wrestler and make several extra copies. Put these in the school library and send one to anyone who has helped your team financially. Our book last year was over 100 pages and my kids from years ago still have theirs. If you need ideas coaches, I will gladly loan you one.

19. Establish an honors board in your room with all time team records, etc. We have a 60-45 club for wrestlers who win 60 + matches with 45 + pins in their middle school career.

20. Kids at the middle school level love small rewards. We give a diaper pin for their warm up sleeve for each pin in a match as well as career win pins at 25, 50, 75 and 100 that we ordered from a company called Driving Force.com. Kids also love old tournament shirts, etc. that we just hand out to whoever has worked hardest that week. Your former wrestlers will donate these.

21. Put framed photos of past champs up in your wrestling room for motivation.

22.Involve your team in community service - Our scrimmage this year was called "Wrestling With Hunger". We charged a can of food or donation to get in and got 200+ cans and $60.00 to donate to student council for the Christmas baskets.

23. Have a separate wrestling dinner or banquet aside from the usual all sports dinner and make it as classy as possible. Allow younger brothers, parents, etc to attend as well.

24. Maintain a supply of practice clothes in case a kid can't afford stuff of leaves something at home. We are lucky enough to have a washer and dryer (donated) in the locker room area of our wrestling room and we can just wash them and keep them ready.

25. Take the time to post ALL your scores on WVMAT and call them to the local papers.

25. Establish a team website. You can get one free at Teamdiscovery.com and it is very easy to set up. Ours has not been updated for a while but will be soon.

These are only suggestions and not every thing will work for everybody but they have helped us build interest, numbers and a competitive program. I am not holding us up as having all the answers just offering some stuff that we as coaches, parents and fans can do to put a sprk into our programs. Sorry this is so long but if it helps just one team it will be worth it.

I just wanted to let coaches and wrestlers know that the JV Tournament that North Marion has in conjunction with their Holiday Quad is still on. Wrestlers should arrive by 4:00pm to register and weigh in. A $5. 00 entrance fee will be charged this year with a maximum of $50/team. One coaches pass will be given for every three wrestlers. comments: I am pleased to announce that Weirton Madonna will be getting a brand new, state-of-the-art wrestling room this spring. As some of you know, Madonna lost the use of its old wrestling room which Coach Jamie Lesho put so much time and effort in last year when the building was taken out of service by the Catholic Diocease. This August we had architectural drawings made for a new room and began simply writing letters to the parents of former wrestlers asking for pledges. The response, as is typical with wrestlers everywhere, was incredible! Parents of former Madonna wrestler and 3X state champ, Ed Neely, stepped up to the plate first with a major donation (By they way, Ed is now a physician in the military stationed in Iraq). Nearly every parent and former wrestler who contributed talked about how much the sport has added to their life. We currently have pledges of $63,000 and a bid to construct the new building for $74,300. We have a Night at the Races fundraiser planned for April.

If anyone would like a copy of our campaign brochure with a drawing of the new wrestling room (or to make a donation or suggest the name of a person or business who might help out), please e-mail me at the above address with your mailing address or phone me toll-free at my office in Weirton at 1-800-424-5529. Donors will be honored on a permanent plaque in the room at the following levels: CHAMPION ($5,000 and above); GOLD MEDAL ($2,000 and above); SILVER MEDAL ($1,000 and above) and BRONZE MEDAL ($250 and above), but every donation is greatly appreciated. Thanks to everyone who supports wrestling our state.

I was told by someone that at least one of those schools was given 10,000 at the begining of each season. Is that way off base? Just curious. As I said before, if this is true, more power to them. It's great to see that kind of support from the school and the parents!

comments: I agree with coach. However I also think teams should wrestle just above there level. I think just about every team in the state could go to the Brooke Classic, Winners Choice, and WSAZ. These are great tourneys for most of the state to go to. South still goes to WSAZ, PHS wrestled in Winners Choice last year I think and they both used to go to Brooke. By the way these tourneys that South and PHS go to (Ironman, beast of the east, Reno, St eds Quad), they just dont go, they are invited. Im not bragging just stating that most of the state cant go to these tourneys. I would love to see everyone in Wellsburg, Fairmont, and Huntington. It would help our state a lot. As far as the state tournament goes, It is a well run event that is usually quite exciting. I think for our population our State tournament is just fine. Good luck to all this year and go Big Reds and Patriots.

comments: Listen, choad, some teams are working toward that level, but, like coach pointed out, many programs haven't yet built that foundation and to simply schedule big may not be the answer. I see it like this: It's a process. If a wrestler can beat only 50% of his WV competition now, what does he stand to learn from getting pinned twice quickly by even better kids and having his day ended abruptly when he could be somewhere getting 4 or 5 valuable matches that day. I'd rather have a young wrestler say, "I went to the 3rd period with a kid who placed 5th in WV last year", than to hear, "I got pinned early in the 1st period by the guy ranked 5th in the nation". Wow! doesn't he feel special. It really does depend on the experience level of your team. As a team matures these tough tournaments like the Ironman will definitely make them even better wrestlers, but you have to build that foundation from the little guys on up, work hard, and earn those needed credentials to get into some of these tournaments.

I'm personally kind of proud of our state and our state tournament and I would never refer to it as a joke. Just out of curiosity, what is the average number of years experience (youth on up) for high school teams around your area? I'm going to guess that for my high school this year it would be about 3.5 yrs. Most started wrestling in 7th grade. Some come out for the first time as upperclassmen. As you can see by this, we do not have a problem finding plenty of good competition. Does this sound like anyone else out there?

In the last stanza, I've seen it written as "man" so it rhymes with "can". "Person" sounds too much like an attempt to be politically correct as it doesn't follow form with the rest of the poem- doesn't sound right. Just an observation.

comments: Does anybody have anything else to say other than brag on Wood Co? Other counties in the state try hard to put together good programs. The only thing Wood Co. has that smaller counties don't have is numbers. The fact that they wrestle year round helps too. In small towns people have to play several sports. I know there are exceptions to this but I think you'll find a larger percentage of multi-sport people in other counties.

comments: You'll never know how good you can be until you know how good you have to be!

My son dominated the local youth league throughout much of his career, with most wins being techs or falls. This did not prepare him for high school! Traveling to Pennsylvania, and such, every weekend, where matches were won or lost by mere points, is what helped to prepare my son. It is too bad that many schools in the state support only their football teams, with only a small pittance thrown toward their wrestling programs. The boys, (and girls), on the wrestling teams work their #!@$%^'s off, only to get little respect from their athletic departments. More power to programs like Parkersburg High, and Parkersburg South for getting support and respect from their athletic departments! Once you reach high school, if you can't convince your coach to fight for a tough schedule, about all you can do is go to as many tough tournaments in the off season as you can. This would include freestyle. You also can't overlook the importance of good practice partners. Unfortunately, this is a tougher nut to crack, and usually involves traveling great distances to practice. Anyway, good luck to everyone this season!

comments: Your post re scheduling is good and fairly accurate. However, the teams who travel for good competition do so after years of hard work and dedication on the part of wrestlers, parents, and coaches. Speaking for PHS, the team is not given much money by the school. They have to raise large amounts of money and do so with hard work. I think any school can do what PHS and South do if they are willing to do what is necessary. It takes a lot of commitment from everyone concerned and is not something which happens overnight. Usually it has been a process of many years. Most of the wrestlers have wrestled since a very young age against the best competition they could seek out. They are not teams comprised of wrestlers from rich families who have a lot of extra money. Most of the families are average income (or less) who have sacrificed much to help the wrestlers become what they are when they reach high school. If you couple that effort with hard-working and competent high school coaches, you usually get good results. I commend all of these young men, their families, and their coaches for their dedication to this sport. I do feel badly for some wrestlers who do not live in an area which gives them this opportunity. But, any group in any area can do the same if they are willing to get started and continue the process.

I have to give them total props for having the means and the marbles to go to those big tourn. and duals. I myself wrestled for a small WV program. Heck, we had to steal athletic tape from the B-ball players locker room so we could wrap our stoved fingers. I know what it is like to compete with zero budget and no respect. In closing, thank you for coaching and being involved with the worlds oldest and greatest sport!

comments: There's much to be said for strength of schedule. We always believed, and still do, that to be the best you have to beat the best. It is my experienced opinion, however, that one's strength of schedule should be appropriate for the skill level of your wrestlers. In other words, most programs should not be travelling around the country looking for the best out there. For a typical WV team, made up of wrestlers with 0-5 yrs. of experience, a steady diet of getting beat down with little chance for success would not be productive. Schedule competitively with plenty of opposition that may be superior to you. If you have a team that has come up through a league, competing at tournaments since a very young age, to me, that's the key. Then you should by all means seek out that elite level you're after. Often times it is just a matter of philosophical differences. You will not convince me that a boy can be satisfied having never won anything because he is simp ly at peace with the fact that he wrestled tougher competition. I'm not buying it. If most teams had the huge athletic budgets of some of these more progressive teams, it would be nice to travel afar just because you can. As a coach I get somewhat tired of the condescending tone of some who don't see the whole picture. Most programs will do what they think is right and should not be made to feel guilty. It all shows at state tournament time and beyond.

Williamstown will also be on the road to the midwest classic where shane smith wil try to avenge his 3rd place finish from last year and claim a championship there. Its all happening this weekend, the biggest weekend in high school wrestling. Wood County leads the way in the state of west virginia by showing they can compete. comments: With wrestling season well underway I would like to take the time to say good luck to all the young men and women involved in this great sport that we call wrestling and would like to submit the following poem for posting. It was written by Walter D. Wintle and is entitled " Thinking "

If you think your beaten, you are;
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you want to win but don't think you can,
It's almost a cinch you won't.

If you think you'll lose, your lost;
For out in the world we find
Success beigins with a fellow's will:
It's all a state of mind.

If you think you're outclassed, you are;
You've got to think high to rise;
You;ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.

Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger and faster person;
But sooner or later the person who wins
Is the person who thinks they can.

Good luck to the Big Reds and Williamstown too. Here's hoping Williamstown wins state championships in football and wrestling both. Man, it's good to live in Wood County. It's a sports fan's dream. That's not meant to be cocky. I'm just proud of all the kids in all sports at all of our schools. Well, gotta go cheer on the Yellowjackets!!!!!!

comments: Ok all you "fans" let's do something a little differant.. instead of debating the entire state why don't we start a little smaller and list the best teams in each region and wrestler to keep an eye on. That way maybe we'd all have some one to watch...ok all you experts let's see region by region.....anyone want to go first ....and yes we know region 1 is the toughest but what about the others?

comments: matches have started now, so everybody keep us informed with your results. it doesn't take much time to post results and it is quite easy. Thanks
Editor's note: I'll echo that sentiment. Don't be afraid to use the "submit scores" pages on this website. This can be done from any computer which is on line - which should include any computer in your school's computer lab or library. You don't have to have email accounts to submit scores. The biggest problem people have when entering scores on these pages is inadvertantly hitting the return key and having the scores sent before you are finished. This is no problem. Follow the suggestions, use the "back icon" to back up to where you were, and pick up where you left off. Go ahead and tinker with the pages, and send in some "practice" scores if you like, in order to get comfortable with the process. Nothing is posted on this site until it is reviewed by me.

comments: About AA/A 189: Keep an eye on Cody Potts from OG. He was injured for the state tourney last year as a sophomore, but he's all man. He placed third at the OVACs last year and lost to one of those Williams brothers from Beaver Local who was a senior. He'll definitely make some noise.

comments: 189 in AA/A has 2 very good wrestlers Ward from Independence, and Mccoy from hoover, im sure that there are more solid 89's though

comments: Zeke Jones was just named mens olympic freestyle coach along with Tom Brands and Kevin Jackson. This is a great honor and the wrestlers in WV should take advantage of any camps and clinics he does. I know he did some freestyle clinics this summmer and they were great. He also worked with the state team some during there training camp. I don't know of any other state freestyle teams that had an Olympic coach at there practices. We are very fortunate and should be using these opportunities to better ourselves.
