comments: Why would someone post only the PA winners of the Brooke Classic on a WV mat site? I
am faxing the local newspaper article to wvmat.com today. The classic battle was at 171 where
OG's Derrick Stickles beat Parkersburg's Chris Daggett in the semifinals by a score of 5-2.
Editor's note: I post what ever I get, which was what was done in this case. I'm hoping to get more complete
results in a few days. Re the PA scores, it would appear that this website is enjoying a wider readership
outside the confines of WV. If you don't believe that, check the youth wrestling pages....

Congratulations to Parkersburg South, Oak Glen, & John Marshall on their excellent showings
against out-of-state competition this past weekend. Every wrestling fan, coach, parent, or
wrestler in the state of West Virginia should be proud of these teams as they help put west
Virginia Wrestling "on the map".
I hope to see more results posted on Brooke, St. Albans duals, Ripley-Nitro quad, etc. If
anyone has this info please post it to the site or email it to me and I will gladly submit it.
Thanks!

First, I was impressed with some of your research. Other than my Dad, I was not aware anyone
knew as much about me as it appears you do. For your notebook, the two years that fell in my
favor were 1989 and 1990. In 1988, I actually lost 2-1 in the finals. I was one of the lucky
young wrestlers to run up against a great Parkersburg team, who had the tournament won Friday.
I was a bit surprised you were aware of my experience at the Jr. National tournament. I had a
great time and the opportunity gave me the chance to meet many great coaches in this state.
This website is actually new to me, so I am not sure how to submit corrections, but the weight class my junior year are not correct. The weight I wrestled at the Jr. Nationals my junior year was actually 165 lbs. The information about me wrestling 154 lbs as a senior was correct. I am guessing that is how you found out about this part of my career. I am sure you questioned how I would wrestle 171 during the season and drop two weight classes for Nationals unlike Fairmont’s Courtney, who went up for the Jr. Nationals. It is okay; I do the same thing whenever I think about it and would never encourage anyone to do it. I just felt I would have a better chance to be more competitive.
As far as the coaching, I am just as excited as you sound. I look forward to the season and to see young gentleman learn more about a sport and about life. I just hope to make a difference for a young person just as many have done for me both in and out of this state.
I will not participate in some of the types of conversation I see in this forum since I personally do not believe in those tones in high school athletics. I did; however, want to thank you, hedgesvillefanm, the school, other coaches, all of the parents, and most of all the young men I get to work with every day at practice. I would have just said so in person, I just do not know how you are.
To everyone else, good luck and I look forward to see everyone in Feb.

comments: To Coach Rick Rinehart and his Mannington Middle School wrestlers: Congratulations on
winning the Cameron Invitational tournament against some VERY tough competition. I remember not
so very long ago when Coach Rinehart was putting his team together with a rather limited number
of wrestlers. But he was always willing to travel great distances for tournaments to get his
wrestlers mat time, even when he knew that they might take some lumps along the way. I have
always admired him for the way he worked with his kids and never gave up on them. Now, he has
put his team "on the map" as one to be reckoned with. It is a great tribute to his
perserverance and ability as a coach to build his team from the ground up, and always keep his
faith with the kids. To you and your wrestlers, I say GREAT JOB, COACH!

originally thought! Sorry george, you was right i was wrong, wow what a tournament! They beat
Massilon Perry who everybody thinks will be number 2 in ohio Div.1 behind St.Eds of course! I
followed it most of the weekend and was very pleased with South's performance, and they will
only get better! Check out the placers -
103 - Sophmore Felix OsunoCotto lost in conci's and places FOURTH!!!
125 - Senior Ryan Metx, NOTHING more can be said about this kid. BEAT, the top guys at 125 in
the nation to win the CROWN jewel for the year so far, defeated the St.Eds kid 6 to 3 to become
only the second South wrestler to win a championship there(Casey Daggett last year?)
Heavyweight - Chris Morrison won his final match to place FIFTH! Chris is the top heavyweight
in WV hands down!
Great job South, see you at PHS this week.
From a post that I read on another board that DID NOT have South in there, the
folowing teams were said to be in the top twenty somewher with only the first three being 1,2,
3.
Blair Academy, St.Eds, Great Bridge, St.Paris St. Graham, SVSM, Massilon Perry, Milton Wis, and
Waynesburg, PA. Interseting that the team that finished in fourth last year right ahead of
South was way down the list CVCS was a no show! Sonny Dye, I hope you did great on your ACT's!

comments: ..... the wrestling team at Harpers Ferry is now done. When the head coach resigned in September the board never posted the job on the county's internet employment page, leading us to believe they had a new coach. When practice was suppossed to start .... it becaame obvious that there were no new coaches ... it was until after Thanksgiving that the job was posted and by then it was too late to get a coach. So now my son and about 50 other boys can't wrestle. What's bad is that it's to late for anyone to go out for basketball even though more boys wanted to wrestle than went out for all the schools basketball teams combined....... Harpers Ferry is a small school and wrestling was THE sport. It didn't matter who they wrestled they almost always won. They had a trdition that everyone was proud of. The sportamanship was super. My son couldn't wait to go there so he could be part of the team and now he can't wrestle anymore. They went 63-1 the last 2 years and now there's no more team. Why?

comments: I read with interest Mitch Vingle's article on wrestling in the Kanawha Valley. I
find it hard to believe Capital and South Charleston have no teams. Especially South
Charleston. The official quoted in the article from that school even stated he didn't know what
happened to the mats. This is more sad when you realize when they combined Dunbar (I'm a Dunbar
High alumnus) and South Charleston, Dunbar had a good wrestling mat. It's gone too? Although
wrestling is not as big in the Kanawha Valley as it is in other parts of the state, it still is
competitive (several state champs and place winners through the years and look at Nitro) and it
still touches the lives of individuals who participate. I fell in love with wrestling at Dunbar
High in the mid-seventies starting with coach Bernie Carnie who talked a few of us football
players to stay in shape for football by wrestling over the winter. I fell in love with the
sport almost immediately. Although I was not wildly successful the lessons learned and friendships made changed my life forever. Most of my friends in
Fairmont and many valued statewide friendships have come about as a result of my 10 years of
coaching pee-wee and Jr. High wrestling. Many lessons learned on the mat, from coach Bernie
Carnie and coach Chuck Wright (a Stonewall Jackson alumnus and a former Kanawha Valley state
wrestling champ) I've applied to a successful career in my pharmacy practice. I would suggest
the programs that are still going , not to give up and would hope the people, students and
leaders in the schools without programs to work to restart the programs. You never know when
you will touch the life of a child in need.

everything seems to have fallen in place this year - a senior-laden line-up, 8 returning

In regards to these fantasy matches, I dont know how one can say who can beat who when the match never took place. Ive seen and been involved in many matches where the wrestler who was supposed to dominate ends up loosing for what ever reason. While it is interesting to speculate whom could beat whom, let the events on the mat decide. This is not only in reference to the fantasy matches but matches during the season. Basically Im saying, "Let the kids wrestle". You would be suprised how far a little heart will take you on the mat. Good luck...stay healthy...and keep those grades up...

may remember it from college Health course. Followed properly a

Please dont be letting wrestlers of any age wear anytype sweat-

Following them would be Charles Town, possibly Beckley Stratton, Moundsville and Harpers Ferry. As far as middle schools go I see Point Pleasant as the #1 team. Others who will be in the top tier include Cammack, Milton, Spencer, Ripley, Braxton, Andrew Jackson and Buchannon Upshur. Also some of last years Jr. highs are now middle schools such as McKinley. This could also effect the rankings. Of course we all do not get the chance to wrestle each other except at WSAZ and some of the Panhandle teams have too far to travel, so it's partly conjecture anyway. Hope this helps.

anyone. On another note I wont brag and say comments I dont think possible. Martinsburg has a
good team this year. We are young but, we have experience in our youth. We have a couple state
qualifier's back and some regional placers. See ya on the mat!

Here is my annual pitch to submit scores from matches. This website doesn't amount to much if we don't have scores, because, when all is said and done, what happens on the mat is the only thing that really matters.
Don't hesitate to try out the "Submit scores" pages if you haven't tried them. Go ahead and tinker with them and send some practice stuff. Once you get the hang of it, it is pretty quick to key in the results. If anyone has trouble with the "submit scores" pages, let me know.
One good thing about these pages is that you don't need an email client to send them. You can key in the results from any computer that is on line. Mat stats people can send in the results from the computer lab at school the day after the match, if nothing else.

comments: I was also impressed with Morgantown's close battle with Fairmont Senior but the
Polar Bears had 2 of their wrestlers (HWT SIngleton & 140 pounder) who did not have enough
practices and had to forfeit and wrestle exhibition instead. If you count their 1st period
pins in the actual score Senior wins 45-19.
Still, Morgantown does have a nice young team. Madia from RCB was also impressive at 130.

Will he still have his Circle of Honor Wrestling Camp?
If his leave is true . . .it hurts the surrounding area!

comments: I have been reading the forum and from what I see some of you need to spend more time
on your book work and less time on the mats. It is a sorry state of affairs that you can
wrestler, but you sure haven't learned to spell or write a correct sentence. I'm not sure how
some of you have the 2.0 to remain eligible. If I were your English teacher you would not pass
the course. Please proof you comments before you submit them. It doesn't reflect well on your
school when you can't even write a simple sentence.

It was a tough competitive tournament and ran very smoothly and quickly. We'll hook it up again on Dec. 15th at the Ohio vs WV Duals. I was also impressed with a very competitive Andrew Jackson team.

comments: Congradulations Morgantown High on your narrow loss to Fairmont
Senior 33-31. The team showed fortitude in moving 103 through 125 up a weight
class in an attempt to secure a first ever victory over a Fairmont team.
Although a loss, this performance demonstrates the vast improvement of
Morgantown High, who opened last year with a 71-6 loss to Fairmont Sr, and an
84-0 opener the previous year. Special Cudos to Josh Tanaka and J.R. Downs.

comments: Kids will be coming in from all over the country to attend Ken Chertow's upcoming
Winter Break Training Camp. Here is the information for interested WV coaches and wrestlers -
Olympian Ken Chertow's annual Winter Break Training Camp is scheduled for Dec 26 - 31, 2001 at
the Ramada Inn in State College, PA. Ken has personally designed this camp to give wrestlers a
distinct edge over their opponents during the upcoming season. Through a carefully designed
sequence of personalized instruction, intense drilling and live wrestling, participants will
come to understand the technique, intensity and commitment required to become a champion.
Bruce Baumgartner is just one of many outstanding guest clinicians scheduled for this camp. One of the most accomplished wrestlers in the world, Bruce is the only USA 4 time Olympic Medalist - earning Gold in 1984 & 1992, Silver in 1988 and Bronze in 1996. Among other achievements, he has earned the most ever World medals (9); World Cup medals (13) and US National Champions (15). He was unbeaten in the USA in 16 years and has earned more medals than any wrestler in the world. Bruce is currently President of USA Wrestling.
Don't miss this opportunity to be trained by the best. For complete details see http://www.kenchertow.com
Wrestling coaches are always welcome to attend and observe Ken's camps free of charge. Also the public is invited to attend Bruce Baumgartner's motivational talk scheduled for the evening of Dec 28th. Call for details - 814-466-3466

comments: To South Fan,
I like your comments, can't agree more completely. If you went to the match against
Cabell Midland you will probably agree that it's a good thing that the State tourney is 2 1/2
months away because we (SOUTH) need to get some gas in our tank.
Seniors looked aggressive, underclassmen looked good, all a little rusty.
Definitely don't use the Iron Man as a measuring stick for this year's team due to football
playoffs keeping wrestlers' attention a little longer this year, try Brecksville maybe.
PHS and SOUTH on the 12th will be interesting, saw Schenny and Troy scouting.
Good luck to both Parkersburg teams and Williamstown.

comments: To Regionalist: I agree that some re-alignment needs to take place and your picks are
as good as any I've seen. The only problem I see is in region 4 where South would clean house
and many would scream that they are in a weak region ! Actually when you look at the past and
understand that South places most of their wrestlers in the state tourney so it is a mute point
which region they are in anyway. South never asked to be placed in region 1 where only 7 teams
remain. One very strong team that went to AA from region 1 was Oak Glen.And...when they were
there and Brooke,Wheeling Park,John Marshall and Weir were strong in wrestling, no one ever
complained ! That aside, I do beleive it is time for some re-alignment. Thanks !

comments: All this talk about Martinsburg, Give
credit to their football team though at least they are in position to win a state title. If
you want to talk about strenth from the panhandle you should turn your attention to Jefferson.
They have just about everyone back and add some tough young wrestlers that did well in junior
high. With the naming of Chad Billy as new head coach (former 2x Pa state champ and former WVU
2x national qualifier, one match away from all-american status),with his renewed work ethic and
discipline this team will be the powerhouse in this region of the state. Martinsburg will not
only not beat Hedg. this season they will have a tough time beating Musselman!!
