comments: I would like to give my opinion on a subject that will get different responses. I am president and coach for the Patriot Junior Wrestling club. I believe that so called Head coaches are highly given too much credit for the success of their teams. I believe that a good program shouldn't be looked at as one head coach. Again I don't believe in head coaches! It takes teamwork at the coaching level with all the coaches. Besides, remember that the KIDS are doing all the extra hard work to become as good as they can be. Good Programs and good wrestlers are not the result of one person. It is called coaching teamwork and hard work from the kids. We were National Team Champions last year at the Tulsa nationals and it was a result from the Kids HARD work and a good group of coaches. Not Head Coach!!

comments: Mark Samples All-American wrestling camp was a huge success!! Thirty very dedicated and talented wrestlers came together to experience what Mark had to offer. True to form, the All-American graduate of Edenburo U. let no one down. He led the wrestlers through 6 collegiate style workouts and 3 quality runs, enough to satisfy even the toughest wrestlers. Working out during the "off"season has positive benifits and produces results. This group carries the hardware to back that up. their accomplishments include; 32 NATIONAL TITLES, 24 national place winners, 2 CADET ALL-AMERICANS (M.Easter,WV,Chris Lape,PA), 3 WV HS STATE TITLES, 1HS placer, 32WV JR. STATE TITLES and 18 placers. Many wrestlers were members of 2 Tulsa National Championship teams and Future Champions Challenge Cup in Chattanooga,TN.

The wrestlers and parents had many positive comments, many reserving a spot in the next camp. The wrestlers left camp tired and satisfied, knowing they polished fundimental techniques and wrestled their hearts out. The parents were happy their sons and daughter had this oppertunity to get a jump on the compition. I have yet to set a date for the next camp. When plans are finalized I will post it on the WV Mat page, also mailing it to everyone on my mailing list. To recieve future camp information e-mail me at TEAMEASTER@AOL.COM or write to Charles Easter, 311-a Grandview Ridge Rd.,Buffalo, WV 25033

comments: to comments, funny you should mention Johnson at 112, last year at Herbert Hoover Quad Stevens had a forfeit at 103 and moved up to challange Johnson at 112 who also had a forfeit at 112 , but for some reason when Stevens went out to the line no one showed up! Stevens left with a double forfeit.

No offense to anyone but there is no way that University will win the NCAC they only have about 1 or 2 wrestlers that will do well. They have a few place at the tourney i dont see them coming close to winning it.

Well no one forgot Stevens. Chris Johnson is the best man at 112. Stevens might have been good at 103 but he will have it a little tougher at 112.

From: Rob Archer, WV Jr. National Team Coach
comments: I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone involved with the WV Junior National Team making the trip to Fargo, North Dakota. It was truly a team effort to get these hard-working kids to the biggest tournament in the world. I am truly proud of the kids that had the guts and desire to lay it all on the line and try to improve their skills. The schools that were represented should be truly proud of the kids they sent. It was an honor for me to work with them. As far as I am concerned, I will be running this team for the next 30 years. I can promise that it will continue to grow each year. For you wrestlers that were on the edge of going or not and decided not to make the trip, you missed a valuable opportunity. All I can do is present you kids with the opportunity to compete against the best. It's up to you if you wanna wrestle the best. A special thanks to goes out to some very dedicated individuals: Aaron Schetter of Parkersburg South, Tim Mayle of Buckhannon (official driver and chaperone), Bill Archer state chairman, and, finally, Dennis Stanley for his hard work and unbelievable extra effort. Thank you guys. To everyone else, let's keep WV wrestling growing. This is a great big step in the right direction.

Chuck -
Saw your posting on WVmat "wandering" about cadets. Need to watch those typos. People will think your a dumb jock :)
I took Mason and Moore to Cadet Nationals around 1990. They placed 3rd & 7th. Tournament started in late 80's when I was in college. Cannot recall any other WV boys placing since than other than Matt, but I only went one other year. I took kids to Junior Nationals a bunch of times, but tourneys were only recently combined into one weekend in same arena. Steve Higgins made a Cadet World Team, and placed in Junior Nationals, but I do not think he even went to Cadet Nationals.
Ken
Editor's note: Check the National page. There are a number of WV wrestlers who placed at the nationals from 1988-93, according to some info I received a couple of years ago. This page need updating. Can someone help??

comments: i feel the 130 and the 135lbs weight class's should be stacked this year. You have the men from the 125 lbs weight class-2x state champion Hayhurst who was 34-1, Prather who took 3rd (33-7), Zyla (21-12), Leach (35-11), Hughes (32-10). Then you have last years 130 lbs class- 2nd place Glass (36-5), 6th place Lynch (29-8), Anderson (21-6), Lucey (29-11). Then also you can't leave out the 135lbs class of last year- 2nd Childers (33-7), Brown (33-9), Dillon (27-9), Bosly (27-11), Bragg (40-7), Jones (24-4), Cross (36-8). It all depends on what these men weigh, and how hard they have been training during the off season. I am going to go ahead and try and predict the 130 and 135lbs class.
130lbs
1st. Hayhurst
2nd. Hughes
3rd. Prather
4th. Lynch
5th. Leach
6th. Zyla
135lbs
1st Glass
2nd Childers
3rd Cross
4th Bragg
5th Dillon
6th Jones

Even with the loss of some stellar wrestlers, Midland will be well stocked again this year. Watch out also for Justin Stanley and Todd Arbes who could have a say in things at the state tournament as well. Go Knights!

I had written earlier in regards to a wrestler that attended and graduated from Parkersburg High School. I met Greg in 1991 when he was attending Washington State Community College in Marietta, Ohio. I believe that Greg graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1982... In 1998, I located Greg Pettit on a friends computer. He was listed as the gold medalist in wrestling for the deaf in Moscow. I haven't been able to locate him as of yet, but am still looking. If you are able to find him, please have him e-mail me. Thank you so much for your time and cooperation.

comments: Hi everyone, hope the summer is going great. Little hot up my way. Anyway, I just graduated this year from HS, and won't be continuing my wrestling career in college. However, I am going into Secondary Education and in the future hope to continue my wrestling life on the side of the mats coaching. So, I don't want to get away from the sport. Next year, I was thinking about getting either my coaching or refereeing certification. But why I am leaving this message on the forum is to see if any schools in or within 20 min of Philippi,WV would allow me to come to practice every so often and roll around with their team. I'm no great wrestler, I qualified for the state tourney three years, however I failed to place. I just love the sport and don't want to get to far away from it. If anyone wouldn'y mind having me come to practice and roll around, email me at the address above. Sorry, for taking up so much forum space with this post, but not to much is on here in the summer.

Things got tough in a hurry the second session for our cadets.

Both Jason Mays and Chris Daggett suffered losses the first bout of the second session to be eliminated.

Nathan Pickens lost his next two after going 4-0 the first day.

Matt Easter has had an outstanding tournament. After the first two sessions he is 5-3. He clinched a spot in the medal rounds with a first period pin over a member of team Ohio. In the medal rounds he lost to Tim Kephart of team Missouri who will wrestle for the championship tonight. Matt will wrestle for fifth place this afternoon. He can do no worse than sixth place. Either way Matt will be considered an All American by USA Wreslting. Congratulations to Matt.

In the Junior tournament there are 1256 wrestlers in 12 wieght classes. Jason Ward Started out 3-0 with close but solid wins over Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. He then lost two; one to Nathan Wacker of Pennsylvannia and a second one to Brad Christie of New Jersey.

JP Stanley started out with two first period pins over team New Jersey and Team Indiana. He then lost a close bout with two time Alaska State champ and Boise State signee Jesse Brock. In the fourth round he lost to Maryland State Champ Branden Lauer. The other Junior wrestlers were eliminated after the first two bouts.

We plan on returning to West Virginina Saturday. We expect to be in Huntington Sunday morning

comments: Results from day one for the Cadet Freestyle group.

We expected better succes when fresstyle started and so far we have not been wrong. Cadet Freestyle has 1352 wrestlers competing in 13 wieght classes.

Nathan Pickens from Parkersburg South had a great first round at 143 lbs going 4-0. He had a pin aganst Louisiana, a tech fall against South Dakota, a close win over Pennsylvannia and a fall over an Alaska opponent.

Matt Easter from Buffalo also is undefeated at 2-0 in 94.5 lb bracket. He has two convincing wins. One an 8-0 win over Minnesota and a tech fall over Oregon.

Jason Mays from Huntington High is 2-1 in the 154 lb bracket. He lost a close first bout to Wisconsin. He came back with a convincing tech fall over Iowa and a absolutly punished a Virginian in his third bout. Jason was down 4-3 in the second period when he turned the Virginian with a reverse Bow and Arrow three times. The Virginina will be sore for days after that bout.

Chris Daggett from Parkersburg South is also 2-1 one in the 154 lb. bracket. He had a solid win against North Carolina. He then tech falled a Connecticut wrestler before losing 5-6 to Illinois.

The boys from Cameron were close in several matches. I think we had three one point losses. But were eliminated.

The ineresting thing about these tournaments is that you can lose one bout and still win the tournament. Several of the Greco champions had taken a loss earlier in the tournament.

The Juniors get started tommorrow as well.

comments: Junior Results from Fargo

We had six entries in the Junior division. We had more experience with these boys with at least three of them with Greco experience However the first round was disappointing. There is an average of 90 boys per wieght class in the middle wieghts.

Joey Mayle of Buckannon Upshur was the bright spot going 2-2 in his first Greco competition. He won his first match over a New York opponent 8-5. He lost his next bought by fall to Oklahoma. In his third bout he was starting to get the hang of the style and dominated a Florida opponent. His fourth bout was a loss by fall to a wrestler from Washington. State.

Jason Ward of Cabell Midland won his first bought with an overtime win over Illinois. His second bout he was dominating Sean Watters of Ohio. He was attempting a turn to achieve the tech fall when Waters stepped over and pinned Jason. Jason lost again to an opponent from Connecticut to be eliminated.

The rest of the boys went 0-2. JP Stanley of Cabell Midland drew a tough bracket with Brandon Lauer of Maryland and AJ Grant of Michigan his first two bouts.

Coach Archer's plan was to have the boys wrestle greco to get over the intimidation of the size and quality of this tournament before freestyle starts on Wed. All the boys are looking forward to the next round.

I will post results on Thursday.

Those of you who know CP Schlatter from Columbus. He is in the 114.5 finals in Cadet.

comments: Results for Cadet Greco at Fargo
Sunday PM

The Cadet Greco Team finished up during the second day of competition. The results were not unexpected considering that none of the boys have wrestled Greco before.

The Cadet Greco Tournament had 770 competitors competing in 13 wieght classes. That is about an average of 60 per wieght class, some were much bigger.

A parade of the state teams was lead by by Bruce Bumgartner. The area that we wrestle in is an indoor football stadium. There are 23 mats running at one time.

Tyler Hughes fom Cameron won his first bout with a win over an Idaho. In his second bout he was ahead 10-1 going for the tech fall and got caught in a headlock and pinned with 15 seconds to go by an opponent from Kansas. Tyler was later eliminated by a boy from Colorado.

Chris Daggett from Parkersburg South tech falled his first opponent. He lost his next two.

Jason Mays from Huntington High Lost a close opener to an Idaho boy. The score was tied 3-3 after the first period. Jason got thrown late in the bout to lose 6-3. In his second bout he tech falled an Iowa opponent. In Jason's third bout he won in overtime against Ohio's number 1 kid who was expected to place. Jason was later eliminated by an opponent from New York 4-0. An excellent showing for Jason in his first competion in this style.

Those are the high spots. The low spots are the rest of the boys went 0-2. Blane Mayle suffered a thumb injury (poosibly broken) in the first minute of his first bout.

All fans would of been very impressed with the LKC all-sports banquet. It was very well attended and all the student athletes looked great!! Nearly all of the wrestling champions were present to represent our great sport. The LKC showed up large on the state level in many sports, especially WRESTLING. Our small school conference produced 31 place winners,5 being runner-ups, and 6 of the wreslers became STATE CHAMPS.We as a conference also can claim the coach of the year in John Peters from Ritchie and the Dutton Award winner in Mike MILLER. WOW!!! WHAT A YEAR. CONGRATS TO ALL ATHLETES,THE PARENTS, AND THE COACHES.

West Virginia is going to be represented in Fargo by 16 young men from all over the state. Cabell Midland and Cameron High Schools are represented with 4 wrestlers each. Parkersburg South, Huntington and Buckhannon Upshur with two each. The Cadet team has some familiar names; Matt Easter, Tyler Hughes, Roger Kupfer, Nathan Pickens, Chris Daggett, Jason Mays, Curt Meyer plus others. The Junior team is smaller but has more freestyle experience with Jason Ward, JP Stanley, Jared Walters and Joey Mayle plus others. I believe Coach Archer has done an excellent job of preparing these boys for the biggest challenge in thier carrers. A special thanks to Aaron Shetter who came down from Ohio to work with the boys. Another thanks to the parents who have supported our effort take WV wreslting to the next level. We leave in the morning for Fargo. If I can get on a computer in Fargo I will try to keep WV Mat Posted.

comments: I noticed a major error in your 1990 state tournament results. At 171 lbs., Rocky Morgan of fairmont senior decisioned Chad Hill of East Fairmont and went on to become state runner-up for the second consecutive year to Robert Jarrett of Hedgesville. Tou have Hill winning and Morgan placing sixth, when in fact the exact opposite happened. Morgan beat Hill 11-5.
Editor's note: Thanks for calling that to my attention.

comments: does anyone else think it is odd that from pee wee through college folk style is the main type of wrestling. than once you finish college there is no folkstyle olympic team or any thing like that. I for one think folkstyle should become an olympic event.

Attn Randy R.: I didn't get the AA/A 152 ( I got a duplicate of the AAA 152) If you see this before I get a letter out to you, can you mail me the AA/A 152 from 1995?

comments: Jonathan Delligati's idea for a North-South allstar wrestling match is a good one and should be communincated to the highest levels. Maybe, to make it interesting, and not just a state tournament rematch, it could be done in freestyle. Just something to think about. Keep up the good brain work Jonathan!!!

comments: I'm afraid the squeeky wheels have won this round and the kids safety has lost. A mouthguard is a simple, effective and cheap safety device. It is PROVEN (read the studies) to eliminate or decrease the severity of tooth, mouth injuries. Many wrestlers already wear them now and few problems have developed because a wrestler spits their guard out of his/her mouth. When they do, the official has always just knocked it out of the way and the wrestler puts it back in at an appropriate time. I have never seen a match stopped for a mouth guard, maybe the officials I'm exposed to do a better job than most. Kids safety should be one of our first priorities, period!! I've not been coaching too long, about 8 years, but I have seen many injuries prevented by the guards and I've seen several injuries that could have been lessened or prevented by a mouthguard. One other point to consider. When a kid does have a mouth or tooth injury, parents frequently have to take time off from work to deal with the problem, several doctor or dentist appointments are usually needed to correct the problem. I realize this is probably a minority opinion but I feel we neglected one of our primary duties in preventing injury and suffering of our kids.
Dr. Miller, thanks for the opportunity to air opinions regarding issues rrelated to wrestling. Keep up the good work!!!!

comments: I was just wondering why the state of West Virginia does not have a North-South wrestling match for Seniors like some other states do. And if it could ever be possible to get one started. I think that if there was a North South match a couple weeks after the state tournament that it would persuade more WV wrestlers to go to the NHSCA tournament in Pittsburgh.

comments: I have the State tournament books from 1990 through 1993 but with the weather being nice and three other ongoing personnel projects, it will be a while before I can work them into the software. I also have a contact who might have some books from the early 80s, which I need to follow up on.
