comments: Coach Bartram has taken a leave of absence. This leaves the wrestling team without a coach and no qualified coach willing to take the position temporarily for only 1 year.

From: "mawa guam (marianas amateur wrestling association)" mawaguam@netpci.com
This is written in response to Dr. Bill Welker's article regarding folk style wrestling. I fully agree that the United States should not give in to the remainder of the international scene in converting to freestyle wrestling. Although similar in nature - folk style wrestling concentrates in the fundamentals of wrestling in terms of escapes, riding, takedowns, etc. which allows better conditioning for wrestlers of all ages by allowing them to combine technique, power, speed and most of all smarts. As a resident of the island of Guam, we are forced to compete in more international (fila) sanctioned tournaments, which is freestyle - however, being a Territory of the United States we participate in Folk style or collegiate style of wrestling in our schools. Personally .. folk style wrestling offers more excitement as opposed to freestyle. I mean let the bottom wrestler work for an escape of reversal rather than laying there and avoiding back exposure, no real excitement in that.

It seems like the international scene would not be able to compete with their US counterparts, with strength, techniques, fundamentals and smarts - so they force the international practice of freestyle.

My question to you .... is there anyway possible to perhaps try to promote folk-style wrestling to a large scale that hopefully one day we could see it added to the olympics the same way we have freestyle and greco? Our wrestling association has discussed with other federations including many in the polynesian areas as well as several in the European area that would like to have this vision happen.

Please advise on the steps that we could possibly do to help our cause and others that may possibly assist us in having this happen. We have successfully held international tournaments in our area inviting wrestling federations in the East Asia region - where we held Folk Style or Collegiate Rules and tournaments were a huge success - with many of the federations going back and questioning their respective olympic committees in how they could push to include folk-style or collegiate style rules in the olympic and/or a normal tournament practice in their area. I would love to see more of the US college rules applied for this as it is very similar to freestyle rules aside from the stalling call.

Wrestlers are meant to work and not lay and stall! I hope to hear from you regarding this matter.
best regards,
tony i. aquino

comments: If we really want to see who is a better wrestler A, AA, or AAA, why isn't there a 4th day of wrestling at the state finals where your 1st and 2nd place winners of each division face each other. Then we would see who is the real state wrestling champions.

comments: Well last year Point was way behind Williamstown in WSAZ and Winners Choice. Last time i checked Williamstown was AA

comments: HAS WOODROW WILSON HIRED A NEW COACH YET ? Coach Bartram is teaching in Ohio and has taken a years leave of absence. Rumor is the program may fold. Hope not. The seasons not far off and the team has a good crop of talent. Returning starters from last years squad are Seniors-Josh Evans-5th at 152 AAA last year and Justin Boyden-4th at 145 AAA last year. Juniors- Zack Evans and Jay Thomas, both one win away from a top 6 AAA last year. Seniors- Ryan Bostic and Garland Ward. Juniors- Justin Wharton, Joe Mcquillen, Nick Llado, Josh Sturgill and Nate Wilson. Sophomores- Tyler Wilson and Sean Meade. This team is on the rise, they were Region 4 runner-ups last year and can only get better. I hope the administration at WOODROW WILSON gets busy and finds a coach. The time and effort put in by these kids during a lifetime of wrestling deserves at least that much from the adults in charge of the school ! If you want to ask why they don't have a coach yet, or apply for the job, the number at the school is : 304-256-4646. It's a shame for a team returning 13 starters to be in a state of limbo this close to the season.

comments: I would just like to add something to this debate about the toughness of AAA & AA. Both classes are difficult, but what really helps develop wrestlers is the level of competition that they get both in practice from their teammates and from the tournaments/matches they wrestle in throughout the year. Some AAA & AA schools wrestle very tough schedules going to out of state tournies and wrestling the top teams here in West Virginia. However, some teams wrestle very weak schedules, and when you don't wrestle against stiff competition how can you become any better? This is not an excuse for these people, just an unfortunate thing that happens. Even more importantly, if you don't have someone close to your level to wrestle with every day in practice there is absolutely no way you can get much better. This is how South and Oak Glen & other top teams get so good; some of them wrestle tougher matches in practice with each other than they do in state championship match! es. Just a thought.

comments: To J. Your right.35 years of following WV state wrestling and only missing 1 state tourney in that span probably qualifies me a little more than you! South wrestles Oak Glen the last two years and splits two close matches with them and you say AA isn't tough? Tell that to all the past AA state champs who probably worked just as hard you did to become a state champion. You've got to be kidding!

comments: I agree that AAA wreslters are generally better than AA wrestlers but not always. But its said that 1 out of 5 kids are good athletes. So in a AAA school there a lot more students to choose from which makes it tougher. In double AA the crop is not as the thick and for that the wrestlers are not usually as good. {in most cases} But thats why there are 2 seperate tournaments the competition is just as tough for each wrestler in each weight class. But either way they are both great to watch so neither one should be put down or up on a pedistal let the kids wrestle and enjoy what they do.

comments: to j
you may be a two time AAA state champ , there are a lot of states champs around, AA has a lot of tough wrestlers and state champs also, AA is tough, AAA is also tough, there have been a lot of AAA schools beaten at tournaments by AA schools, i don't understand the need for you to judge one over the other. enjoy the sport. WRESTLING IS TOUGH,PERIOD!!

Colby Painter keep working at the pace you are and there is nobody that can keep you from your goals your well on your way to accomplishing a lot of things i never did in the sport. And that goes for the rest of the team as well your a talented group of young athletes and im eager to see how you guys do this season. Mark your a state champion if you put your mind to it. Chad and Brandon you guys are right there with the best of them just put forth the effort and your sure to be succesful and for the rest of the team just do your part and you guys can improve our top 10 finish at the states to at least a top 5 and maybe more. so good luck fellas

The reason for no flyers, is they wont let you post them unless it is an active club, and when the paperwork is done, there will be a meeting held for sign-ups and camp dates, and open tourney dates. Finding somewhere to practice may be an issue, im not sure if the Hall has any mats or not. e-mail me if you are an marshall student w/tips and suggestions.

comments: Suggestion for Jr. High/ Middle School Coaches -
After we attend our rules clinics on Oct. 15th let's list all the tournament dates we know and who to contact on the forum. My team would like to wrestle more in the central part of the state and north of us. We will have two open weekends as we are not attending 2 events in Ohio that we have gone to in the past. For teams like us or others that are just looking for new places to go this would be a great help. I will list all that I hear of at our meeting as well as any Ohio or KY events anyone might be interested in since we are at the border and maybe we can all get a firmer grip on the schedule early in the season. Good luck to all coaches as they fill their rosters and wrestlers HIT THE BOOKS to make sure you stay eligible.

The proposal to split the state wrestling tournament was discussed by the principals at their WVSSAC meeting in the spring. They had just made 3 classes in Track, Volleyball and Golf. Only a few sports were left with wrestling being one which still had AA-A. The Board of Appeals looked at the numbers in Wrestling and the total of wrestling teams in the state did not meet the requirements to be made into 3 classes. So, there will be no change in the conduct of the state wrestling tournament this year.

To find out more go to the link below and read the article "Wrestling's Five Styles." Actually there are many more than five - for example Cornish Wrestling, something called Schwingen (Swiss Style) and YAGLI GÜRES (Turkish style.) It's a wide world out there and folkstyle is not all there is. I also think it's a fallacy that wrestling Greco or Freestyle will hurt your folkstyle skills. The more you know the better you become.

comments: I would say the top AAA team for the 2002-2003 season would have to be Parkersburg High. They have 7 returning state placewinners- 3 champions, 1 second, 1 third, 1 fifth, 1 sixth. Parkersburg South has 5 returning placewinners- 1 champion, 2 seconds, 2 fourths. Ripley is next with 4 placewinners- 1 champion, 1 third, 1 fourth, 1 sixth. Teams with 3 placewinners- Nitro, East Fairmont, Huntington, Brooke, and Jefferson. On paper at least the nod would have to go to Parkersburg for the coming season although Pakersburg South will be looking to maintain its place at the top.

comments: From reading the forums at themat.com and wrestlingreport.com it looks like Parkersburg will have the toughest schedule of anyone in the state. Are they really attending Ironman, Powerade, and Beast of the East? All of these are out of state tourneys with some of the toughest teams in the country and they all occur prior to January. If they are really attending all three, hope no one gets injured or peaks too early. Good luck to them.

Perhaps with a year to prepare we will represent our state in a more professional manner. Someone suggested we talk to a rep fron NC, which I have done at great length during the last two days. NC has developed a very strong USA WRESTLING organization with a number of professional people donating their time to promote their state. Alot of adults working together in an organized fashion is what is setting NC apart from many other states.
WV is currently attempting to organize. We will us this FORUM to communicate our progress.

comments: According to the National page of this website, the two other WV wrestlers to place in both styles were Ken Chertow 1984 (Huntington High) and Rick Merzouk 1991 (Braxton Co). Chertow placed first in both styles winning the OW award for freestyle and Merzouk placed 4th in Greco and 3rd in Freestyle. WV has now had 2 champions in 2 years. It would be nice to continue the trend. Maybe next year WV can increase the number of wrestlers that attend and do even better.

Also congratulations to everyone who went and competed. Know that Anthony Easter was only one match away from placing after winning last year. Not sure how Turnbull and Matt Easter did, results no longer show them.

Surprised that there was little info on site about Fargo. Don't know if coaches were not sending it in or if maybe you are on vacation. Well, maybe next year. Would also like to encourage the coaches for the National Team to do a little more to encourage kids to go to Fargo. Did you see that page/site for NC team. Great stuff. comments: I , too, would like to know the dates of the State Tournament for 2003. When I checked out of my hotel last year, I was told by the hotel staff that of the three teams that had already checked out, they had made reservations for 2003 on two different weekends. No one knew for sure.

I would suggest that the dates and locations be prepared before the printing of the programs each year. It would surely not be too much to include the following year's information in the program. With the compression of the schedule in 2002-2003, it would have been very important for all of the participants and supporters to have known in advance of leaving the tournament.

Not knowing in advance also creates problems for the schedules of each team during the regular season, and for the scheduling of facilities for the regional tournaments.

Thanks in advance to the touenament committee for doing this with the 2003 state program.

If those teams listed are the only ones in the conference, then you're not going to have a very big turn out. I wrestle in the OVAC, and that by far blows any other conference tournament away. I'm not trying to be mean or say that that chance of having the NRVC Tourney will never happen. I'm just saying that to make it a bigger success if it does come back, you need to have more teams.

And a few years ago, I watched a young man wrestle in Alabama without his legs. The bottom line is that our athletic departments require physicals and/or weight certifications to be signed off by a physcian. If there is a medical concern that would jeapordize the health of your child, a doctor should make that call, not the coach. It's the coach's job to encourage and teach any willing soul, not to find reasons to keep them off the mat.

comments: That statement always concerns me. Without knowing hardly any of the facts that statement was uncalled for. Remember, he was "recently" diagnosed. The first step that this parent should do is to take the steps to manage the diabetes. The child's health is far more important than wrestling any day. Without a report from the doctor, I would hope that all coaches would suspend our wrestlers until such information is provided that the child can compete without any danger to his health. To put a wrestler's health over a school's win is, in my opinion, a good coach. I am sure that if the doctor is ready to release the boy to the disapline that this sport requires, that the coach would be more than willing to have the boy back at practice. It is comments such as yours (first response - get a lawyer) that this boy should not be allowed in the practice room until cleared medically because, we all know that if something were to happen, your first response would be, the coach new that he had a condition and let him lose 10 pounds anyway so - get a lawyer.

I wrestled for several years w/ a teammate who had diabetes...it made it harder for him to lose weight, but other than that it did not affect him very much at all. I'm sure your son is very tough (obviously since he's a wrestler!) , and he will do just fine

July 17, 2002
comments: To Concerned Mom: I'm sorry that your son has been diagnosed with type I diabetes. There will be some major changes in his life and yours. HOWEVER, this is a disease that can be managed with a lot of education and close monitoring. Besides dietary changes and medication, exercise will be an important part of his life. I do know that there have been successful Olympic and Professional athletes with type I diabetes. I don't know where you live, but ask your doctor to see a diabetes education specialist who can help to guide you through these tough changes. In a few weeks, after you and your son are starting to feel more confident in his diabetes management, talk to his doctor about weightlifting and wrestling and perhaps he can give you some facts to take to the coach that may help to convince him that this can work. It may be fear of the unknown that is guiding the coaches decisions to exclude him, and he may also feel responsible if your son were to become ill during practice. Best wishes to you and your son through this hard time. Keep us informed with how things are going!

comments: To the wrestling mom with the son with diabetes.
Talk to your sons doctor and if he agrees the risk is minimal, speak to the coach, athletic director. Diabetes is not an automatic disqualifier. Numerous kids compete in many high school sports yearly with this condition. Weight loss may not be an option for this child. Talk with everyone as soon as possible. If he is so brittle wrestling is not an option, this may be a good learning experience. If his friends all wrestle and he can not compete he may want to help the team with anything the coach needs help in doing like paper work, uniforms, setting up and cleaning mats, score and statistics. Keep in touch and let us know what happens. What area of the state are you from? Knowing this we may be able to recommend a good physician.

Why you ask?
A State Champion I know had diabetes through out his wrestling career (all 3 phases) Club-Jr High-High School...
He lifted weights, off-season conditioned, and placed in the States all 3 years, winning his senior year.
Consult your doctor, give the coach the doctors opinion, and if coach worth his weight in practice room sweat socks, he should see the light. If coach has medical degree, ask for second opinion. I'm sure he is not the only kid to face this problem in High School. Dont let the kid be cheated out of a sport he really loves. Coach should reflect on why hes there....kids-kids-kids

Memo From: Ken Chertow's Wrestling Camps
All 5 weeks of our camps have gone great this summer. I believe we've had a chance to make a lasting, positive impact on many good young wrestlers. It's exciting to see the improvements that our campers have made from one summer to the next.

Camp is not over yet! 3 weeks to go! We still have 3 great weeks of camp remaining in State College, PA (July 19-Aug 2) and in Allentown, PA (Aug 4-9). The list of clinicians and staff is tremendous. We will be joined in State College by Olympic Champions Brandon Slay (July 20-21) and Kendall Cross (July 27-28), Penn State Greats John Fritz-NCAA Champ/Long-time Penn State Coach, Tim Flynn-Edinboro Coach, Dr. Jim Martin-NCAA Champ/Orthopedic Surgeon, and many more outstanding instructors.

Allentown staff will be awesome as well. The following coaches will be on staff throughout the week.
Rob Hermann - USA Olympic Team Coach
John Hangey - NCAA All-American. Rider University Coach.
Pat Tocci - Brown University, HS All-American
Isaac Ramaswamy - Greco National Champion. Longwood, NY HS Coach
Paul Widerman - Olympic Alternate. Harvard Grad. Smartbell Inventor.
John Sacchi - Rutgers Coach.
Jeff Buxton - Blair Academy
Steve Powell - Easton HS
John Hughes - NCAA Champion at Penn State. 4x PA State Champion.

I encourage you and/or your athletes to get on board. You won't find a more complete camp anywhere else in the nation. For more information or an application, please go to http://www.kenchertow.com.

On a different note, I'm going to post an email I wrote to the Office of Civil Rights regarding Title IX. I would like to see more people writing letters against the misinterpretation of the law. Wrestling is being killed by the proportionality concept and this needs to be changed. Feel free to use ours as an example and forward any new ideas you may have to me.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

July 12, 2002
From: Jim LeMaster
comments: In response to "Don Vito" I am not from Parkersburg but have had a chance to observe them for the last 20 or so years in the following contexts. 1. As the parent of a wrestler who competed in PeeWee from ages 6 on against the Cougars, Patriots, etc. 2. As a parent of a middle and high school wrestler who competed against them over the years including Cabell Midland's visits to that city and their visits to Huntington at the State Tournament. 3. As a Middle school coach who competes against the feeder schools Blennerhassett and Edison at WSAZ each year.

You offer several soutions as to why they are so good. Well, it's all of the ones you mentioned. A rock solid Pee Wee program, excellent coaches in vast numbers, dedicated hard nosed kids who are willing to wrestle 100+ matches a year and travel to get tough competition. There is one further intangible that you did not bring up. Every little kid in Wood County it seems wants to wrestle for South or the Big Reds when they get older. It is a dream that they work for and after a while the tradition of excellece becomes self perpetuating. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work on the part of boosters, parents and school administration whpo do not treat Wrestling as a second class sport or something to watch when there's no basketball game.

As for being next to Ohio, that depends on what part of Ohio! There is only one team in Ohio that is competitive near us and we need only to cross the bridge! I have found their coaches to be not only excellent as far as wrestling goes but they seem to be good role models for the kids as well. One particular incident at this years WSAZ sticks out in my mind. One of my kids (I Coach Milton Middle) had sprained his neck slightly in a match earlier in the night against a kid from Spencer and while on deck an Edison coach helped him work the soreness out of it and treated him like he was a member of his own team. Three matches later we were wrestling Edison. Not to slight Blennerhassett either, they have always treated my kids with respect as well. Both schools are technically excellent and physical too. I'm sure Jackson, Van Devender, etc. are tough as well.

You speak of Cabell County, we are trying very hard to catch up and still have a ways to go. Perhaps Midland's biggest win in the last few years was to beat South in their gym in a dual. It meant so much because we respect what the Wood County kids have accomplished. I don't know which two men you refer to in Cabell County but we do have two fine high school coaches in Bill Archer and Ernie Sparks and they do a great job. We at the middle schools are working hard to send them the kind of athletes needed if we are to step up to the plate against the Wood County schools and other teams of their quality. If we are going to be competitive in this arena, we have to raise our level of commitment and training to those of our opposition.

Wood county being beside Ohio has nothing to do with them being good. Southeast Ohio is the weakest part of the state for wrestling. You still have to go up to Columbus or Akron and Cleveland before get to the Tough as nails part of the state.

Why are they so much better than everybody else, is it the pee-wee programs, or maybe its there head high school wrestling coach, but my guess is that they are right beside the state of Ohio. All these things factor together to make them the dominating teams in the state. I'm from Marion county and it just seems that we are about ten years behind. We do have one thing going for us and that is the best coach in the state R. Michael of North Marion H.S.. He developed into this coach without even stepping a foot on the mat his entire life. How did this happen? Maybe you followers of Clarion Wrestling camp should take a drive down south Cabell County, where there is two men from that town that can teach wrestling to a level that can compete with Wood County. In closing, East and West good luck this year.

Bridgeport High School is in the initial stages of possibly starting a Varsity Wrestling program. There are two main hurdles we must overcome. The first is to make sure there is enough interest among the students to support the program. This should be just a matter of polling the students.

The second hurdle is finding a head coach. Mike Mason, a former standout at WVU has agreed to help out as an assistant coach, but is in the process of setting up his Chiropractic Office and can not commit to being the head coach. The program has the support of Principal Bennet and Coach Carey.

Anyone wishing more information on the coaching possibilities please contact Mr. Bennett or call Sandy Brunswick @ 842-4563.

comments: I would also like to congratulate all of the Patriot wrestlers for their outstanding performance at Norfolk. A few Red wrestlers also attended the tournament. Billy Cornecelli 2-2, Brandon Rader 3-2, J.W. Dowler 2-2 and Derrick Knapp won one match before breaking his leg during his second match. Parkersburg should be proud at the way all these boys wrestled, Several other wrestlers from WV went and all did a super job of making WV stand out. Team West Virginia had a great showing at the National Tournament and I can't wait till the season starts.

comments: I see no reason for the Jones boy not being allowed to wrestle for the middle school in his school district. The school board test the young man to see if he is doing his school work and passing. The school board decides on what subjects he has to take and the family pay the taxes that are required . SO WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? People going to private schools are allowed to participate . So why not this young man? The main reason is the dictatorship called the WVSSAC. I belive every body that has a passing grade should be allowed to participate in sports in their district.

We have several out of state entries for the Upshur Summer Tournament this Saturday. For example, teams from both Kentucky and Ohio are bringing 10+ guys. Also, wrestlers are coming from as far north as New York and as far south as North Carolina. The response from WV has been good, especially from local counties, but I am still looking for some people I have saw wrestling this offseason that have not registered yet. We have decided to allow walk-ins on Saturday because a lot of baseball players have said they would like to come if their games get rained out. I checked the forecast today and they are calling for rain on Saturday. We look forward to seeing you all on Saturday.

Memo from: J.P. Tenney, Buckhannon Upshur wrestling:
Location change for the Upshur Summer Tournament, now will be held at the Middle School Use the same directions for the High School but after the 3rd stop light the Middle School will be on your left, located next to the road. I also wanted to clarify a couple questions that have come up: You may enter more that one age division if you wish (example: if you are 12 you may wrestle in the 11-12 and the 13-15 divisions if you want). Cost for 2nd division entered is $10. Also, if you have two members from the same family entering the tournament the cost for the second person is $10 or in other words $35 for both. Again, thanks to all you that are attending our tournament. The response has been outstanding! Those of you not registered yet either mail your entry before the12th or call/email me by the 13th. Looking forward to seeing you on June 15th.

comments: There are two tournaments at Connellsville High School (PA) in June. The first is a NHSCA Qualifier on June 8th. Registration and weigh-ins are 8-10 am and wrestling starts at 11 am. There are 4 divisions: elementary (grades 4-6); middle school (grades 7-9); high school (grades 9-12); and college. Wrestlers in 9th grade can either wrestle middle school or high school. We are accepting walk-ins. The top 4 placewinners qualify for the NHSCA Nationals at Virginia Beach on June 30-July 3. The second tournament ia a PAWF Greco/Freestyle Qualifier on June 15th. Greco weigh-ins are 8-8:30 and wrestle at 9:30 and freestyle weigh-ins are 11:30-12 and wrestle at 1:00. This qualifier is also a walk-in. Out of state competition is welcomed at both tournaments and both tournaments are listed on the youth tournaments page of wrestlingreport.com.

No Problem ... we all get upset. Especially if our kid or someone we care about is involved. I hope things work out for the young man in question and we can all get past this issue and move on to other things.
