comments: TO UNANOMOUS:YOU SAY THE SOUTH IS BRINGING HOME THE STATE TITLE WHERE IT BELONGS. YOU SHOULD DO YOUR HOMEWORK BECAUSE THE LAST TIME A SOUTHERN TEAM WON IT WAS IN 1964 WHEN SHADY SPRING WON IT.SINCE THAT TIME SOUTH HAS WON IT 13 TIMES,PHS 9,JOHN MARSHALL4,WHEELINGPARK 4,WEIR 2,OAKGLENN1,WIRT CO. 1, AND NORTH MARION 1. SO I BELEIVE THE TITLE IS RIGHT WHERE IT BELONGS.AS FAR AS THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS GOES,YOU HAVE NO IDEA OF WHAT SOUTH AND PHS HAS COMING UP.IF I WERE YOU I WOULDN'T GET MY HOPES UP TOO HIGH.I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR WHEN SOUTH WILL HAVE THE SERVICES OF A CERTAIN NINTH GRADER,HE IS A MAN AMONGST BOYS.

comments: Not time for my final championship predictions yet, just an answer to an inquiry about Wharton. Wharton I hear is probably going to be at 152. I just think that it would be a better idea for him to wrestle 152 and stay clear of Smith. I think at 152 Wharton would be a great match for Smith and he could possibly beat him. But at 160 I don't think anyone will be there to beat him, and I think he'll eventually see that and seize the opportunity and a title. Should Wharton not go 160 however, look for Wirt Co's Chris Miller to step up and claim the title here.

Don't you think?

comments: Hello all the southern stirer is back.....this old country boy is reall getting tired of all the predictions of you yankees ....one thinks that you should look south of P'burg to see some fine young wrestlers.....just as an example of some of the finer names south of charleston that hasn't had much said about them are:

Riner ...Huntington
Ray .....Huntington
Nelson ..Huntington
Easter ...Nitro
Easter ...Nitro
Gibbs.....Midland
Wilson....Midland

I believe all of these except for Wilson have placed in the state tournament.....

Not that I'm a predictor of anything but this old boy thinks you should keep an eye on Huntington to be as High as second again this year....and my dark horse for the 02-03 season is Woodrow Wilson.....but guess it doesn't matter what we all think the boys will decide all this mess the 1st Sat in March...Good luck to all

comments: #1- he toughest tournament in the state is the Brooke Classic or OVAC's. Ask anyone who wrestles for east fairmont or fair sr if winners choice is tougher than brooke. ( pa powerhouses canon mcmillan, mcguffey, shaler area, moon, west greene all compete alongside wv powers parkersburg (#2 AAA), oak glen (7 timers), fair sr, fair east, john marshall, brooke (up and coming team), wheeling park and edison, howland ohio among others..(all i can think of off of top of head). there arent 14 teams in any west virginia tournament that have the talent those 14 do.

ovac tourney is about a 35-40 team tournament and it features some very tough ohio schools ( east liverpool D-II, Steubenville, Martins Ferry (#7 in D III Oh), Buckeye Local Jay Michael product coach, Beaver Local Top power D-3, Barnesville (125 lb'er topped Frerichs last yr)with basically all of the region 1 schools (Park, Brk, JM,Cameron 12 time in a row single A champs, OG area powers) from WV except St.Mary's and Williamstown.

I would challenge South an Parkersburg to compete in the OVAC's and see how they fared considering Oak Glen (who beat South) has only won it but 1 time in recent years.

#2- Casey Hughes likes 152 just fine and its foolish not to consider him a threat to beat Shane Smith. Smith gets my tip of the hat as i think he presents alot of problems to anyone who faces him, yet Hughes is already a state champ himself and probably would have had 2 had he ot injured his knee during the last month of the season. Adam Leach (who won 135 last yr at 50-1)suffered his only loss last year to a healthy Hughes in a 5-2 decision which Hughes seemed to have control of most of the match. When these two powers collide this season, i expect the winner only taking it by 1 or 2 points, i wont make a prediction because well.... haha its too close to call :) good luck to both men this season. p.s- matt wharton may be lingering around that weight as well i suspect so if that is the case, get ready for a war!

comments: I would just like to take a minute to wish one of the greatest coaches of all time good luck this season in Roy Michael @ North Marion. (rumor has it this is his last year) either way Coach i wish you the best and if it is you last season may you finish with a bang. Also i would like to wish East Fairmont good luck this season we all know about the seniors and rightfully so but the key to east having a shot at the state title lies in the hands of some younger competitors Billy Ray, Jarod, Justin hamrick, along with some other "sleepers" robert barnes, shawn moore, matt shephard, jj. flint these are the guys who will need to step in up and play their very important roles in root to NCAC, regional, and State titles.

comments: I would just like to say that everybody has their minds set on the northern wrestling teams to always dominate, like Parkersburg and P'South, but what they don't know is that this year along with the next couple of years the southern more wrestling teams such as Cabell Midland, and Huntington High schools are both training very hard to bring the State Championship trophy back to where it belongs! Especially CMHS is looking very good this year despite their under classman, but their Sr. and Jr. leadership really makes a differance. Midland is going to show everybody that they have the true heart and attitude to be State Champions this year!

Some portions of the site are free and provide excellent college coverage, as well as high school. A premium service is also offered for hardcore fans. Just an additional observation, after being involved with wrestling for 34 years (wrestler and coach), the OVAC, in my opinion, is the best AND toughest tournament in the state.

comments: SuperChin, where's the largest conference tournament of its kind in the US, the OVACs? Competition there far surpasses the competition of any of the tournaments you mentioned. The tournament last year featured 2 Ohio state champions and a large group of Ohio placewinners from all divisions. Not to mention perennial powers in-state like Oak Glen, John Marshall, Cameron, and other Valley schools like Wheeling Park/Central, Bishop Donahue, Weir, Weir Madonna, Brooke. When talking about tough tournaments in WV, its a crime not to mention the OVACs!

comments: Time for another section of my State Title Predictions...

130:AAA-Braden Shaw: In a class that will be a dogfight the entire year, Shaw's offseason work ethic gives him a 3rd period edge and a title.AA/A-Ian Whittington: Oak Glen has a history of taking good wrestlers and making them champions. In another toss-up weight Coach Shaw pushes Ian to the title.

135:AAA-Seth Young: Young fights all year with cross-town rival Derrick Knapp from PHS but wrestles up for states and claims 135. AA/A-Brandon Dye: Dye stunned many with his run through the tournament last year to claim 3rd. Dye works hard, stays here, and beats out the competition.

140:AAA-Mitch Smith: Mitch decides he likes it here, everyone else decides they don't. AA/A-Steve Flowers: Flowers repeats as the cream of a thin crop.

145:AAA-Phil Bliss: Offseason pays off as Bliss finally cashes check for top honors in Huntington. AA/A-Casey Hughes: Hughes, like Rader, tries 152 and decides he likes 145 better. Reclaims title here.

152:AAA-Daniel Lord: Lord repeats, but its a tough road to the title in a very good weight. AA/A-Shane Smith: Smith is wrecking ball in a singlet. Not many in WV can compete with this kid.

160:AAA-Kyle Walters: Came on strong to close last season with a title, maintains momentum in 02-03 season to win championship #2. AA/A-Matt Wharton: Tough weight last year kept Wharton lower on the podium, but this year he stays away from Smith and finds the top.

Final 4 classes coming soon, comments appreciated.

Ant looked good at WVU wish I could have see you at Navy. Good luck on getting down to 165 and on your future matches. My plan is to get to more of your matches this season. Congratulations also to Tracy Regalbuto and the whole Hedgesville girls Volleyball team on winning states. All 3 Regalbuto children now will graduate with a state championship in some sport. Awesome. Want to wish good luck to Hedgesvilles wrestling team and all the eastern panhandle teams and wrestlers this coming season. I'll get my first chance to see the Eagles tomorrow night in the scrimmage with Handley VA. Can't wait for this. New head coach Robert Jarrett will certainly make his mark in my opinion. I see that he has already made his mark on the schedule which I have to say THANK YOU. And I can't say this enough. By switching the St. Albans duals for the Sherando Tournament and getting Williamsport on the schedule. This gives the team tougher competition and closer matches for those of us fans who really don't have the time to go 5-6 hours down the road except for states. Again Jarrett Thank you thank you thank you. If every one returned from last year Hedgesville should have a pretty solid team this year. Just have to wait and see. Look out for Jefferson though they should be stacked especially all through the middle weights. Anyway about 31 hours give or take till the Handley scrimmage and baby I'm counting down the hours and minutes. See you Eagles there.

comments: hey to all the wrestlers out there bustin there butt's for the glory. Wrestling season is finally underway and the first week of practice is past. The tourny's are finally creeping up and nerves are twisting. This is gonna be an exciting and enthusiastic wrestling season. I would just like to compliment a couple of elite wrestlers in our state. Shane Grogg from what i've seen is the man. i don't know him he doesn't know me but i've seen the kid wrestle. If anyone could stop easter from winning his 4th straight it would be the grogger. and Smith of ripley , heck of a job for a freshman to go 46-0 and get a state title , i very seriously doubt anyone will stop him in his next 3 years of wrestling. and justin ashley, this is one technical hardcore wrestler, he's a good guy and has alot of heart. i don't see to many people possibly getting in his way either. To anyone who isn't mentioned in these predictions posted all over this forum , don't let it discourage you! come back and be the underdog that upset the topdog. i believe any wrestler can defeat another , it's just the values in a wrestler's heart. i've played many different sports but i haven't seen any other athlete compare to the heart of a wrestler. To end this completely pointless post keep bustin it and you'll earn your title. and two others i haven't mentioned are the easters , great footwork and technicality, i'd like to see them get upset just cause it adds excitement to crowd. But i don't see any upsets coming along unless matt and shane go at it again and even at that it's gonna be a heck of a match. Good luck and Goodbye!!!!!!!!

103:AAA-Anthony Easter. Took it on the chin suffering his first and only loss of the year at states to Shyver. Easter may not lose again. AA/A-Anthony Valles. Valles stays small and repeats.
112:AAA-Robert Shyver. Tough wherever he is, he goes 112 with Rader moving up and it's a fit. AA/A-Daniel Allen. Ashley was big and should move up, leaving the door open for a game Daniel Allen.
119:AAA-Brandon Rader. Rader tries 125 and finds he likes 119 better. Turnbull pressures him but Rader does not break, he doesn't even bend.AA/A-Justin Ashley. Ashley comes here to find that the studs here have moved on or up.
125:AAA-Matt Easter. Different year, same results. Grogg is denied by one of, if not the best, in the state.AA/A-Casey Biddle. Calhoun's Chris Morris departed, 125 becomes comfortable home for Biddle.

I think you read WAY TOO much into my comment. My comment was primarily about Grogg from South. I then added "HS kid from PA placed third. Only lost 13-5 to WVU's Jones, NCAA Champion. Incredible." I don't believe my comment implies that the match was close. Secondly, I have seen Greg Jones wrestle. Thirdly, I don't believe my comment downplays Jones ability in any way. I simply believe that for a high school wrestler to go the distance with the defending NCAA champion is "Incredible." The kid deserves some credit!!! Jones other three victories were all by pin. Also, since you identified yourself as x-wvu wrestler, did you ever wrestle the NCAA champion? If so, how'd you fare? I also wrestled in college and am not ashamed to admit I got pinned by a NCAA champion many years ago.

comments: all your predictions are very interesting and hold a lot of merit but everyone seems to be leaving out one of the obvious choices. Justin Goneau of Oak Glen was very impressive last year at 103 and now bumping up to 112 should be equally if not more so. I'm actually thinking state champ for this senior. Any one else have an opinion on this thought?

You commented on the fact that a H.S. wrestler from Pa. only lost to Greg Jones 13-5 and said that it was increadible and made it seem like a close match. First of all, in college wrestling, a score of 13-5 is not a close match. Secondly, if you have ever seen the Jones brothers wrestle, you would know that they like to score their points from their feet and the 5 points that the H.S. kid acquired were probably from Greg letting him up so he could take him down. I wasn't there to see the match, but this is my best guess of what happened. I wouldn't down play Greg Jone's ability and praise a H.S. kid for hanging on to a seemingly close match (some wrestlers can stall very well).

comments: Your predictions intrigue me. I really don't think Clark can beat Hashman. To my knowledge they have never wrestled, however I have been watching them both for the past three years, and I feel that if they did meet in the state finals it would be the best match of the night. They are both very aggressive and experienced but I think the fast paced match would favor Hashman's strength advantage. I would pick him to win by fall over Clark. If this match were to take place it wouldn't surprise me to see both wrestlers undefeated going into it. By the way could anyone from Berkley or St.Mary's varify the weight class of either wrestler?

Editor's note:
I have done my mass mailing of approx 120 letters with SASE to every high school and middle school team (that I know of) to collect updated team info. The letters are all addressed to the coach (or the last known coach) and mailed to the school. I know that probably some coaches never get the letters, because I suspect that mail delivery from the school office to the wrestling practice room may not be an exact science.

Thanks to the coaches who have submitted team updates already via the internet. We have gone through the team pages to try to get rid of obviously outdated info.

Hopefully in the next few days we will start getting back team updates and schedules. I have begun putting together updated schedule pages. I'd like to get the team pages updated as much as possible.

Allow me to make my annual pitch to submit match and tournament scores. This can easily be done with the handy "submit match scores" forms pages, linked up on the front of the site. Don't be intimidated by these forms. Go ahead and practice with them and send in some experimental scores. Nothing shows up on this site until I check it and link it up. The handy thing about the "submit score" forms is that they can be sent from any on-line computer - you don't need access to an email client to send them in. The team mat-stats personnel could send them in from the computer lab at school.

I have finally retired my anemic P-100 with the 9.6K modem and am now sporting a Dell, dude. Hopefully this will facilitate things this year.

Also, most of the youth tournament forms are being converted to Adobe acrobat. This is easier and quicker for me, and gives a more faithful reproduction of the form. The disadvantage is that you have to have the Adobe reader to see them, and they are larger files and thus slower to download. However, I think most everyone has an Adobe reader or can get one, and most computers these days are fast enough that the larger file size shouldn't be a problem. If anyone does have problems in this regard let me know. Considering the large number of youth tournament forms from all over the county that we get, our readership must be expanding outside the borders of West Virginia.

Since I'm in a particularly generous mood tonight (smile), I'm open to suggestions and critique. Send me an email.

Finally, I'm running out of questions for the "WVMAT poll." If you have a good one, send it along. I may use it. Or maybe not.

Thought a SOUTH fan I want to congratulate the Parkersburg Big Reds for having the strongest schedule in the state. This year they have added the Ironman and the Beast of the East which makes their schedule on a par with any school in the country.

FYI (PHS & SOUTH) Some # 1 wrestlers that will be at the Ironman.
112 Coleman Scott - Waynesburg
125 Dustin Schlatter - Graham
135 Daniel Frishkorn ? Great Bridge
145 C.P. Schlatter - Graham
152 Mark Perry ? Blair
215 Matt Koz ? St. Edwards

Weights may not be correct, but these wrestlers will be rated # 1 regardless.

With State place winners Justin Boyden (4th at 145) and Josh Evans (5th at 152) back for their senior season and the following starters back : Sean Meade (soph.Reg. Champ 103)Ryan Bostic ( Sr.3rd Reg. 112) Zack Evans(Jr.3rd Reg. 130) Jay Thomas (Jr.2nd Reg. 140) Joe McQuillen (Jr.4th Reg.). Woodrow also returns starters Justin Wharton (Jr.), Garland Ward (Sr.),Josh Sturgill (Jr.), Nick Llado(Jr.) and Nate Wilson (Jr.). Tyler Wilson (soph.) also returns after season ending surgery as a freshman (12-2 record at 119 at time of injury). I would say Ripley will be tough to top, but Woodrow should have enough fire power to take 2nd at least. Z.Evans and J. Thomas were both 1 win away from placing at states last season and are solid. New talent coming out due to Coach Sarrett taking over the team will also help out. Woodrow may not be a top 5 AAA team, but respect will be earned this season.

comments: The time has come. It's finally here, and I can't wait. I would like to start by saying congratulations to Oak Glen on being named Best Team in the state by Wrestling USA magazine. It shows that our hard work is finally starting to get recognized by national attention. Congarats to Parkursburg for being the second best, but I believe that the school across town should have earned those honors.

I'd also like to wish Oak Glen good luck on the trip to an unpresidented 7th straight state championship. The work that we have done through out the summer and until March will be rewarded once again. We have a very tough schedule so dont get down on yourselves if things don't go your way in the regular season, because it is all just preparing you for the final tourny of the season. The team looks to be not as tough as in the past but I'm sure Coach Shaw will have his guys ready to go come time to pound the Beavers of Beaver Local. I'm also looking forward to the dual with Parkersburg South. It looks to be another very exciting match as in the past two years. I'm sure South will be welcomed to the Oak Glen field house just as they were two years ago. This matchup will probably showcase many AA and AAA state finalists going at each other and thats what will make it very exciting. So, in conclusion, I'd just like to say Good Luck to all wrestlers in the state.

comments: I noticed a prediction by someone named "HERM" displaying his projected regional and state results. In Region 3, he had Woodrow Wilson and Buckhannon-Upshur above Nicholas County, I don't think it's gonna happen. Not only that, but he has Elkins and Robert C. Byrd, (does RCB even have a wrestling team)?, above Greenbrier East and Riverside. GE whipped Elkins at regionals last year with 115 team points to Elkins' 55 (or something close to that). From what I hear in the wrestling community and in the forum, both Greenbrier East and Riverside have heavyweights of state-champion caliber. I also know for a fact Greenbrier East has a solid lineup, the only senior I recall them losing was that undefeated 189 who got hurt mid-season. (By the way, what was their 189's name, and is he wrestling in college? He was a little unorthodox, but he was awesome, too). I also noticed Nitro ranked above South. South always gives their all at states. No chance of that happening.

comments: Lets not forget about the Eastern Panhandle wrestlers, especially Jefferson. They will have another tough team starting in the lower weight classes. Also, dont forget there will be two Gustines wrestling for Jefferson this year, the younger Gustine, Cory, is heavier than than the older brother Codie,I'm sure. Both are real good wrestlers. They have a great Junior League program down there, in Jefferson County. Best of luck to all the High School wrestlers.

comments: I was just wondering if people could give me their "definite" state champ predictions at AAA....
I'd have to say that there are legitimately just a few guys that if they don't walk out of Huntington with state titles, or at least a runner-up finish, jaws will be dropping...
Those guys are:
Bryce Pickens ~ 171 ~ (Parkersburg South)
Shane Grogg ~ 125 ~ (Parkersburg South)
Matt Easter ~ 130 ~ (Nitro)
Kyle Walters ~ 160 ~ (Parkersburg South)
Lou Thomas ~ 215 ~ (Parkersburg)
Phil Bliss ~ 140 ~ (Brooke)
Robert Shyver ~ 103 or 112 ~ (Parkersburg)

Anyone disagree with these guys? If so, holla... By the way, Shane Grogg is the PEACE EASIEST brotha in the state..

This is ****** which is located in Mineral Wells. I would also like to say that Williamstown ran a great tournament. Mineral Wells took 12 wrestlers and all twelve placed. Good job guys.
Editor's note: I posted your notice without posting the name of the Motel for the following reason. I wanted you to know I got the post, and thanks. I got in to trouble a year or so posting "special rates" offers from a particular Hotel (they backed out of the agreement and claimed I had no right to advertise their rates without their express permission) - so I decided to avoid posting such claims again, even when I suppose the offer is up straight as I am sure this one is.

I am all for athletes training all year round to stay in shape and better themselves, just as I feel any coach of young adults should abide by the rules and regulations of that sport. By thinking they are above the rules their actions are not setting a good example and therefore the COACH causes trouble for some (yes I agree) outstanding wrestlers!!!!!

comments: Seems kind of funny someone feels the need to defend a team concerning practices that wasnt actually named. Kind of reminds you of the old saying where theirs smoke theirs fire!

#1 Jason Johnson(PSHS)soph. pins Rashaan Bates(FSHS) sr.1996. in the second period.Jonson was big underdog in alot of peoples eyes, goes on to be a 3 time state champ,so it was not a fluke. Possibly the longest standing ovation in my 17 years attending.
#2Jeff Courtney(FSHS)beats Matt Miller(EFHS) in 2001.Miller, a two-time defending champ had a dominating tourny, scared alot of wrestlers and even a few fans.Courtney,a clear fan favorite, wrestled a beautiful match and recieved a full house standing ovation. The only time I have ever seen the whole arena,(even AA/A fans)cheer for someone like he wrestled for their own team, amazing. Some people say the only reason South fan like Courtney is because he beat Dagget in 2002.I am a South fan and most have been Courtney fans for years. He`s a class act.

comments: I gotta represent my South Patriot squad.. Shane Grogg is gettin that state title this year at '25, and no one is gonna stop him...

Now, onto predictions... It's very difficult to figure out where last year's wrestlers will be wrestling at this season, weight class-wise... But there are a few wrestlers this season to watch out for...

103 ~ Assuming that many of last year's lightweights keep weight down, I gotta tell ya, it could be just as competitive as last year... Champion: Anthony Easter ~ Nitro

112 ~ Too rough to predict.. I don't know a whole lot about upcoming freshmen/sophomores, but I know that Rader, Turnbull and Boone are all planning on changing classes, from what I hear... Maybe someone like Felix Osuna-Cotto or Robert Shyver in this class...

119 ~ Stephen Boone (PSHS) has been training with Pat Sole, and been working as hard as anyone in the state to get back into the top of his class, so I have to think that he'll be a force to be reckoned with. Maybe a Turnbull state title right here, but Boone will have to be watched for.

125 ~ From what I hear, Brandon Rader will be moving to 125 this year, and who knows what could be seen from him. Bottom line, it will most likely come down to Shane Grogg getting that elusive state title.

130 ~ Shaun Smith (PSHS) and Chance Litton (PHS) could be very tough in this class, assuming they are here....

I don't know about the classes yet, so when the season gets underway, the REAL and FULL predictions will be coming...

comments: The "true" wins leader is the wrestler who won the most matches against the toughest individual wrestlers. Alot of statistics in our small state are misleading in that the same wrestler won 10 matches during his career against ONE wrestler in his conference whom he dominated. Who cares who beat up on an easy opponent repeatedly? Tell me about the kid who wrestled outside his conference and in OH and PA and won the tough matches against the best kids. How many of the 100 matches someone won were repeat victories over the same victim? Exclude those easy repeat wins. Then we will know who truly deserves the title.

comments: Several things I think, I think!
To just wondering who was asking about sixth graders being part of a 6-7-8-9 setup - scroll back to Oct. 7th and read the comments from someone who deals with this each season (me) as well as Doc's erudite comments as both a school board member and self proclaimed "wrestling guy" like the rest of us.

To those folks repeatedly asking about the 215 class - here is how it was explained at our rules clinic by Dr. Welker (who knows his stuff!) The 215 class (like 190 in Middle School/ Jr. High) was adopted on an optional basis some years ago to help fill the wide gap just below Heavyweight. It was as the name implies optional. This is no longer the case - the 215 class is officially included in the weight classes and MUST be wrestled. It is not going away - but rather made a requirement. I hope this also occurs with 190 in middle school / jr high as well. If not we have a gap from 170 to 275. Therefore a kid who misses weight by just 1/4 lb at 170 has to move up and wrestle guys up to 100+ pounds heavier. The other VITAL change is to add the 110 lb class back in for Middle school/ Jr. High. We start 10 lb jumps at 105-115. The high schools don't have 10 lb classes until up around 160-171.

I also want to reverse my position on an issue that will doubtless stir up another firestorm of controversy. I now agree that the handshake with the opposing coach was rightfully eliminated this season and is now a penalty on the coach whose wrestler approaches the opposing bench. You can still offer to shake hands outside the mat area. Most wrestlers and coaches see this as an expression of good sportsmanship - but - there are exceptions. I was told by unimpeachable high school coaches that wrestlers from a few schools would come over and pretend to shake hands in good sportmanship wile muttering "%^$# You!" or "Go to ^&*(" under their breath. Or they would come over and shake a trainer or scorekeepers hand and ignore the head coach. In addition some coaches also have made negative comments as well. After the match is over and with little proof, a referee was put in an untenable situation when this occurred. There was in fact, little the ref could do in the way of penalties. Coaches are not blameless either, none of us are perfect. A few years ago, one of my kids won his first ever match by fall and was on cloud nine - he went to the opposing coach (no longer employed as a result of several such incidents) to offer to shake and the coach made the comment, "What are you happy about, you didn't beat anyone worth a #$%@!" My kid was crushed not to mention how the opposing wrestler must have felt hearing his coach say that. On another instance, the same coach called my wrestler a "little girl" (actually much worse but I can't print it here!) after he did not get up following an illegal slam during a match. (A subsequent trip to the ER showed his clavicle was separated from his sternum.) There is no place in our sport for such actions by coaches or wrestlers. These shows of poor sportsmanship disguised as kind gestures by wrestlers and coaches was the cause of the ruling. I was asked by two coaches I repsect (Coaches Archer and Sparks) just to ask our middle school kids not to offer the shake on the mat in order to get them used to this. Although I think this is a sad commentary on our sport today, Milton Middle Wrestlers will not offer the traditional handshake to the coach after the match this season. We will still do so off the mat after the wrestling area is cleared. I can assure you that my wrestlers will never show poor sportsmanship more then once as they will no longer be part of the team. If all coaches would hold their kids - even the "stars" to a higher standard of behavior and sportsmanhip then the recect rule change would not have been needed.

My babblings are too long, chalk it up to excitement about the coming season and little to do on a rainy Monday.

Now NFHSA has decided to take the word optional out of the language of the rule so that all states will use all fourteen weight classes.

comments: Hello everybody. Can you feel the tension building to another fantastic year of of West Virginia wrestling. Notice the dramatic increase in the visitors to the forum! I hope I didn't hurt anybodys feelings when I posted my 2002-2003 predictions, I thought I would through out some scenarios to get some good discussion going. To Fan who questioned me not including Kyle Walters in my picks, go back and notice that I actually picked Kyle to win the state in the 160# class. I also enjoyed the picks by Nitro Rules. I would like to add that I was impressed by many of the South Parkersburg wrestlers last weekend at the Harv. Shane Grogg looked to be in mid season form. It may turn out that Shane will get a shot at Brandon Rader that is rumored he wants. If this match actually comes about, I would suggest anyone who would like to see a wrestling clinic to come. My pick: Grogg's good, but I take Rader 7-2. Any other big matches looming on the horizon????

November 11 2002
From: Jim LeMaster
comments: I have been reading with interest the discussion on career wins. I have a couple of observations. First it is all relative to what types of events you wrestle. For example an undefeated season could include 16 weign ins used at 16 quads. (16 * 3 = 48 wins) + regionals and state tournament. 8 more wins / Total = 56 or it could include 8 bracketed tournaments (4 wins each in 16 man brackets) 32 wins + the 8 for regionals and state events / Total = 40 wins. Both guys are undefeated but there is a huge disparity in number of matches. Furthermore a wrestler who wrestles in consolation rounds at bracketed tournaments and finishes third in every single one will actually have more wins that an undefeated wrestler (and of course more losses!). For these reasons, even though all these young men were tremendous wrestlers and most deserving you are comparing apples to oranges and the record is for the most part always up for argument. Also, there are three year programs where the 9th graders are still in Jr. High and those do not count as varsity wins. I'm sure that many South and Big Red wrestlers could be way up there too if they had wrestled 4 years instead of three. - Another scenario could go like ours - my son, Dave, was undefeated as a 9th grader (4 year school) up through WSAZ when he moved up to varsity (he was too light to wrestle 103 so he wrestled 95 up until WSAZ on the freshman team) Finally gained a little weight then finished a humble 8-4 as a freshman wrestling varsity. His 37 wins on the freshman team should not count on his high school match record thus he finished with 100 wins in high school instead of 137. (Blew out knee - missed half of Jr. Year) If he had stayed on the freshman team in 9th grade he may have garnered more than 8 more wins. My point is it's all relative to your school's set up (whether 9th graders can wrestle varsity and how your coach schedules. Arguing about this is as pointless as arguing about the AA vs AAA thing.

November 11 2002
comments: To all the wrestlers reading these predictions for 2003 State Champs: Don't pay any attention to them. The year my son won, he was barely ever mentioned in the predictions, and when he was, it was usually as 3rd or 4th place. Just work hard all season and totaly surprise them at States!

I have seen it time and again kids that wrestle because they have no choice when they are to small to say no, and only want to please their parents. Then when they get old enough parents are upset because they don't want to anymore. Because all along they only wrestled because Dad wanted them to. There are many of those kids out there.

comments: If the 6th graders in Raleigh County are going to wrestle in Jr High, does the 9th graders go to the High School? I thought middle school was 6th, 7th and 8th, and the Jr Highs are 7th, 8th, and 9th, then what is a school with 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th graders. It seems a little unfair it this happens because you have more wrestlers to draw from with an extra grade in there.

If you know something that nobody else knows please share it with us. I don't think the title will be leaving the Parkersburg area for long time, their youth programs are just to good and that is what it takes to win state championships in high school. I feel that the youth coaches do not get the credit they deserve. I am not a coach, just a big fan and would like to thank all the coaches out there who donate their time to keep wrestling the best sport in this state.

Is that the same Bruce Hinkle that wrestled at fairmont state in the late 70's.he was national champion at 177lbs. NAIA.He was an animal. Also the Davia kid is probably a son or nephew of Randy Davia that also wrestled at fairmont state, during the same time frame.Hinkle pinned his man in the final match in the championship match [1979]in about 30 seconds. I believe Bruce lives in Hubert, OH. Also Randy Davia was also a standout wrestler from Cadiz,Oh.

comments: Another season is upon us and the trash talk has begun. All three Marion County teams should have solid programs this year. North Marion has Starsick and Hays to build around. West Fairmont still has a Delligatti in their lineup and that is a plus. East Fairmont has, I believe, five NCAC champions returning. I don't agree with the "East Fairmont Stud" writer who predicted that East would win the state championship. They will be good, but with Futten and Satterfield gone, they lose two solid wrestlers and leaders from their team. Lack of leadership will hurt them this year. They should win the NCAC and Regionals again this year, but not States.....that title will stay in Parkersburg for another year. Good luck to the Marion County teams.

comments: there are a lot of people talking about the hwt weight class the hwts. they all are not in shape but for one to go to the ironman and take third ,to go to the brecksville tourney and take third and to win the state title one must be in good shape in any weight to do those things and morrison did just that... morrison is one of the best hwts to wrestle and would have won the aa title as well he beat coughey already in the year 3-1.and would have beat most if not all of the 215 pounders as well so let it be known that heavyweights are for real weather people like it or not and that should be the last thing written on this page for the big guys. nate good luck at west lib metz you to. and nate go get in motown you all can an will reach your goals if you put your minds to it and apply yourself...

comments: I'm with you Eastern Panhandle Fan - Anxiously awaited the film "Reversal". I found it to be ridiculous as well. I have three sons that wrestle, one of which has been wrestling since he was six. He is now twelve. He still loves the sport and I believe he will love the sport all the way through high school. Wrestling is not a sport that you excel in for someone else. You work hard and win for yourself. If you don't love the sport yourself, it will be evident on the mat. Alot of hard work and dedication is required to succeed in wrestling....and a true love of the sport! The character in the film didn't possess that important ingredient.

comments: Gotta agree with Eastern Panhandle Fan - I got my copy of Reversal today - his assessment is right on the money. The trailer says it's the "greatest feel good movie since Rocky." Well, Yo Adrian, it coulda been something, it coulda been a contenduh but no, - instead it is the losely autobiographical story of a guy whose father drove him too hard, right out of the sport and right out of his life. All it teaches is if life gets hard you quit, quit wrestling, quit school, quit life. The acting was so-so, the score while pretty music definitely did not fit the movie and the script sounded stodgy and stiltled. It was nearly (Nothing could ever be) as bad a Danny Hodge's ill fated "One More Shot" fiasco that was so heavily touted by USA Wrestling. The video focuses on the weight cutting that borders on the insane in this video and in my opinion it will give a black eye to our sport with all who see it. If I were the parent of a prospective wrestler and saw this little film noir, my son would be playing cricket, tennis or some other little cutesy game and never step into a practice room. You would be better advised to donate the $29.95 to a great charity A.S.K. (Athletes Supporting Kids.) This was formerly WINK (Wrestlers Involving Needy Kids and was started by Matt Ghaffari.) It provides wrestling shoes to kids who can not afford them. It's based in Huntington Beach , CA yet has sent more than one pair the way of my kids here in WV. Just check out your Wrestling One catalog (they send about a million a year) for more info. Right on the Money - Panhandle Fan. I'd like to reverse my copy back to Jim Petulla!

Yes there was some competion between some of them, but i would say none of them were in good condtion, maybe fair condition if that and that maybe pushing it. Well as far as technical wrestling they didnt have it, they were just big strong football players who happend to wrestle too. I think people in WV would be shocked if they saw some hwt's from other state. Hwt's that shoot, they take real shots not the pushing around till one falls on the other.

comments: AA/A Guru: Interesting predictions from last year. One that I disagree(opinion) with is Kupfer/Pickens at 160.Please don't get me wrong,Kupfer is a tough young man but Nathan Pickens defeated two AAA undefeated wrestlers at the state tourney and moved up to 171 in two duals to defeat Chris Daggett and hand Derrick Stickles his only loss of the season. He always stepped up when asked to and his match against Kupfer would have been no different. Also Morrison defeated Caughey in their dual 3-2,but I would have loved to see them in the state finals go at it!Take care!

comments: Those of you who think that heavy weight wrestlers are not in good shape should just take a look at a few. I have seen Ryan Dearman and Lou Thomas wrestle for several years and they can easily go for three periods without sucking wind. Those light weight wrestlers who suck down their weight to run from someone else are the ones you should really be looking at. Heavy weight wrestlers work as hard as anyone out there and the heavy weight wrestler may be going againt a guy who out ways him by 30 or 40 pounds and those light weight wrestlers worry about 3-5 pounds. So, if you think they are not working hard take a look at the two top weights for Parkersburg High School who were also former Cougars and see if they are not working hard and have always worked hard. Mike Litton was a coach that whip everyone into shape, no matter what there weight, so I say go get them heavyweights and show them what it is to wrestle and work hard.

comments: I waited a long time to recieve a copy of the movie "Reversal", and it finally arrived. After all the hype by the producers and the spokespeople such as Cross, Sanderson, etc., I was really anxious to see this movie. What a dissapointment! The movie focused almost exclusively on improper weight loss procedures, with very little other wrestling related content. Was it realistic? Probably for some. Hopefully, that part of our sport is mostly a thing of the past, with some of the new rules that are now in place. The worst thing was watching the star of the movie become a quitter in the end. Not just a wrestling quitter, but quitting school! I was looking for an inspirational movie to show my wrestling team, but this movie is anything but inspirational. My son has been wrestling for 8 years and found the movie to be in his words "ridiculous".

Thomas Nailor, Heath Cliver, Jeremy Laughlin, Joe Caughey, Charlie Gibson, Dana Raban, and Donnie Peck. these are a FEW of the many good heavyweight wresters. u are not giving the bigger guys a chance by lowering the weight class. i personally would not have any problem making the weight. but some may. if you would put a weight class in between then mabe u would see some more good competitors.
