Jerry "Woody" Burns -- "Lifetime Service to Wrestling"

Jerry "Woody" Burns was a 1976 graduate of Parkersburg South High School. He began his wrestling career at the age of 6 with South Parkersburg Peewee Team. He was a member of the first Parkersburg South High School State Championship Team in 1975 where he finished 5th in 1976 as a senior. Woody finished State Runner-Up wrestling under the legendary Coach Rod Oldham.

After high school graduation, he coachred the Mineral Wells Peewee program from 1977-1980. He was a referee for 30 years, referring many Regional Tournaments and worked the West Virginia State High School Wrestling Tournament for 13 years. In 2003, he received the West Virginia Outstanding Referee Award of the year. Woody was the president of the Ohio - West Virginia Board for 5 years and was the Rules Interpreter for 5 years.

After 39 years of service, he has retired from IBEW. Woody and his wife Carol reside in Elizabeth WV. He has a daughter Tessa (Chad) Walters.

Gene Monteleone -- "Lifetime Service to Wrestling"

Coach Gene Monteleone graduated from Warwood High School in 1973 where he excelled in wrestling. His coach was hall-of-famer Dick Edge (2016). Gene earned his Bachelor's degree from West Liberty State College (now West Liberty University). He then acquired a Master of Arts degree from West Virginia University.

In 1982, he was hired to teach and coach at Bridge Street Middle School (Ohio County Schools). His teaching assignments included social studies and physical education. Monteleone was also appointed head wrestling coach and assistant coach in football and track.

As the school's wrestling coach, he won three PAC-8 Midde School Wrestling Championships. In the fall of 1988, he was reassigned to Wheeling Park HS where he taught social studies and driver education. He assisted hall-of-fame Coach Edwad Evans (2010) in wrestling for nine years and also served as assistant football coach for six years.

In 1996, Coach Monteleone took over the helm of Park's wrestling program for one year. He again returned as the head wrestling coach from 2002 to 2007, where his teams were a force to contend with in West Virginia and the upper Ohio Valley. His teams during his tenure recorded a dual meet record of 85 wins and 21 losses.

Coach Monteleone's squads won three OVAC Dual Meet Championships, three OVAC Division 4A Championships, and an over-all OVAC Ron Mauck Tournament Team Championship in 2006. For his outstanding efforts as the Wheeling Park mat strategist, Coach Monteleone was honored three times as an OVAC Wrestling Coach of the Year.

In 2006, Coach Monteleone's mat squad capped the season with a West Virginia AAA State Championship at Huntington. He was also named the West Virginia State Coaches Association Coach of the year in 2006.

Will "Scheny" Schenerlein -- "Lifetime Service to Wrestling"

Scheny Schenerlein was a graduate of Parkersburg High School in 1991. While wrestling under the tutelage of Coaches Joe Handlan & Assistant Dave Hill, Scheny was a member of the 1989 State Championship team and an All- State wrestler in 1991 in the 1601b. weight class.

In 1991, Scheny joined The Parkersburg YMCA Cougar Wrestling Club as an assistant coach under 2018 HOF inductee, Mike Litton. After graduation from West liberty State College in 1996 he was hired by fellow 2019 HOF inductee Geno Monteleone as an assistant at Wheeling Park H.S. The fallowing year he returned home to coach at his beloved alma mater, Parkersburg High School.

Scheny considers himself to be very lucky to have had the opportunity to grow up in Parkersburg and to have been guided by coaches Mike Litton, Dave. Hill and especially Joe Handlan, a 2005 HOF inductee. To be coached by these men and then have the opportunity to learn the coaching craft from Joe Handlan, the greatest coach in lhe world as far as Scheny is concerned, was definitely the highlight of his wrestling career.

Scheny was fortunate to have an outstanding group of assistant coaches over the years and he believes they are receiving this award as well, it was a team effort Dave Satterfield, Jason Marks, Dave Koreski, Tom Brock, Chris Way, Steve Rader, Tony Dickens, Aaron Schetter, Troy Owens & Rick Parks. Scheny and his assistants were fortunate to have outstanding administration during their time at PHS. Ralph Board & Richard Lance, but especially Bill Niday & 2015 HOF Inductee, Jim Hamric. Without the support of Jim & Bill, PHS wrestling would not have reached the heights or achieved the goals that were set for their wrestlers.

One will always remember Scheny's enthusiasm and fire for the sport of wrestling and especially for the wrestlers he coached. Four VW team championships, five nationally ranked teams, twenty five individual state champions, fourteen All-Americans, three national champions, four Dutton Award winners, three outstanding wrestler award winners, two NCAA All-Americans & many state placers. Scheny was honored to receive the Rod Oldham AAA Wrestling Coach of The Year Award three times, as well as The West Virginia Sportswriters Coach of The Year Award & USA Wrestling National Coach of The Year Award

Scheny and his wife Kristen reside in Longboat Key, Florida where he is the founder of The Anna Maria Island Wrestling Club He & Kristen have four children, Harrison, Madeline, Rea & Bodie.

Richard Welker -- "Lifetime Service to Wrestling"

Richard A. Welker has been involved in wrestling for nearly four decades as a wrestler, coach, official, writer, and radio broadcaster in the Upper Ohio Valley.

An OVAC freshman tournament champion, Welker was a varsity member of the 1990 Ron Mauck OVAC Championship Team at Wheeling Park High School.

Welker coach wrestling at Triadelphia Middle School for four years, where his teams posted a 72-4 dual meet record and won four Pac-8 Championships. He was named as the 2010 OVAC Middle Coach of the Year.

He is also an accomplished scholastic wrestling official who has arbitrated numerous OVAC and West Virginia Regional Tournament Championships.

Rick is past President of the Wheeling Youth League and the Wheeling Wrestling Club. He is also co-founder of the WV Youth Wrestling League. Currently, Rick Welker is a committee member of the West Virginia State Freestyle Wrestling Association.

For his many articles on area wrestling and hosting the Rick Welker Radio Show on WKXX, Welker was named the 2013 Snyder-Miller Wrestling Sportswriter of the Year by the West Virginia Wrestling Coaches Association. That same year Rick Welker and his hall-of-fame father, Dr. Bill Welker, (2008), were recognized as the National Wrestling Sportswriters of the Year by Wrestling USA Magazine. In fact, they are the first father-and-son team to be admitted into the West Virginia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Rick Welker is a retired USMC Senior Drill Intructor and Recruter who now works for USA Compression Company.

Welker and his wife Shelly reside in Wheeling and have six children: Chase, Camden, Cheyenne, Canon, Taylan, and Issac (aka Mike, and grandson Greyson.

Ted Zervos -- "Lifetime Service to Wrestling"

Ted began wrestling as a 7th grader at Moundsville Junior High in 1976 at the advice of his brother. Hew was coached by hall-of-fame coaches Larry Chambers (2011) and Ed West (2008).

Ted Continued his wrestling career at powerful John Marshall (JM) High School under hall-of-fame coaches Bill Hinegardner (2004) and Ed Dugas (2005). Ted was a 3X OVAC placer finishing as runner-up as a senior, 3X state placer, JM's fiirst back-to back state champion (81-82).

The fall of 1987 was the beginning of Coach Zervos's 32-year coaching career. He spent 2 years at Union Junior High, 6 years at Moundsville Junior High, 12 years as assistant at John Marshall High School, and 12 years as JM's head coach.

He continued to lead a traditionally strong program at John Marshall leading his team to 2 OVAC Dual Meet Championships. His final season saw the Monarch finish 5th in the state tournament with Anthony Carmen becoming a state champ and also being named as co-outstanding wrestler. Anthony also became an All-American with his 3rd place finish at the High School Nationals at Virginia Beach.

Two of Coach Zervos's proudest wrestling accomplishments were spearheading the fundraising and construction of one of the finest wrestling facilities in the Ohio Valley and State of West Virginia. Also seeing the unification of the little league, middle school, and high school programs which will allow JM to remain competitive for many years to come.

Ted resides in Moundsville with his wife Shawna and two daughters, Zara and Zoe.
