PAINESVILLE, Ohio – In their third open of the season, the Cardinals produced another solid performance. Dylan Taylor claimed his second open title in a row and highlighted the Wheeling Jesuit wrestling outing at the Lake Erie Storm Open.
Redshirt freshman Taylor rattled off three wins before he met teammate Dominick Nania in the 149-pound championship. Taylor claimed the title with a 12-5 decision over Nania. Taylor had a pair of falls and a decision over three NCAA Division I wrestlers in his other bouts.
"It was a fun and tough day for our guys to compete with a mix of strong DI talent and some of the best in DII. Dylan Taylor continues to wrestle at another level winning his second title in a row and 16th match in a row," explained WJU coach Sean Doyle. "Dom (Nania) and Dustin (Warner) both wrestled well and had solid days. It was good to see Nate Starkey (184) building on his early season success as well."
With his finish against Taylor, Nania claimed second, while Warner was third. The senior had one fall and a major decision of his three wins.
Moving up to 133, Warner went 4-1 on the day, including a 6-1 decision over Andrew Lieb of Lake Erie College in the Consolation Final. The junior recorded a pair of falls in his preliminary matches.
Starkey built on his Thursday night comeback win with a sixth-place finish. The Cardinals also had five others – Josh Henderson (133), Brandon Tenney (141), Greg Brusco (157), Peyton Geary (157) and Corey Siegfried (285) – garner eighth-place finishes.
The Cardinals have finals next week before they travel to Las Vegas for the Dec. 19 Desert Duals.
NOTE: WJU 2016-17 redshirt Sawyer Leppla grabbed fifth place in the 197-pound weight class of the open field.
