Cardinals Wrestling Fall Just Short Against Griffins

2/10/2018

GREENSBURG, Pa. – An impressive three tech fall Cardinals performances proved to not be enough Saturday night. Seton Hill registered a 24-18 dual match victory over Wheeling Jesuit.

After a Connor Craig dominating tech fall at 157, the Cardinals (5-6) pulled to within five points, 13-8. Seton Hill (14-3), though, edged out close one-point 165 and 174 decisions and WJU's Aiden Pasiuk (184) and Terrance Fanning (285) tech falls were not enough to make up the difference.

"The score could have been flipped, but when you do not execute certain positions in pivotal matches you are going to always be on this side of the score," pointed out Danny Irwin, WJU head coach. "We are close, however, close won't make us happy in two weeks at UPJ. We will learn from this to prepare for our next opportunity and look to seize it!"

Along with the three tech fall victories, WJU had it fourth win of the dual from redshirt freshman Tyler Warner (141) in a 5-2 decision.

Craig registered his Cardinal record 10th tech fall win of the season via a 16-1 final in 4:29. Pasiuk bested that time for his 184-pound tech fall in 2:53 via a 19-0 final. Fanning finished his heavyweight bout between the two times of his teammates in 3:50 for his 17-1 victory.

WJU has it lone home dual of the second semester and Senior Night on Tuesday evening against Lake Erie College. Opening match is set for 7 p.m.

Match Commentary:
125 – WJU forfeit [SH 6-0]

141 – Tyler Warner took down Seton Hill's Joel Cawoski early in the bout and led 2-1 after one. Warner escaped in the second and added a second takedown in the third on his way to a 5-2 final win. [SH 10-3]
149 – All-American Joe Alessandro had all he could handle against WJU's Daniel Romero. The Cardinal senior battled tough and allowed Alessandro only a second-period escape, but he could not answer in a 1-0 loss. [SH 13-3]
157 – As has been the case all year, Craig wasted no time in rushing in and taking down Logan McKoy. The No. 9 weight class wrestler turned the takedown into a four-point near fall series and he would lead 10-1 after a period. Craig followed with an escape and another series for the 16-1 tech fall. [SH 13-8]
165 – Keegan Driscoll used a double-leg for a 2-0 first-period lead. Zach Voytek tied the match at 3-3 in the second. 174 – After being behind 2-1 with one period gone, Justice Avery tied the match with an escape in the second against Damon Greenwald. The Griffin, though, escaped immediately in the third from the down position for a 3-2 lead. Avery scambled out of two third-period bad spots and missed one final attempt at the winning points to fall by the 3-2 margin. [SH 19-8]
184 – Pasiuk left his 184-pound match never in doubt against Thomas McChesney. Pasiuk had his first takedown 29 seconds into the bout, turned it into four-straight, four-point near fall series for the commanding 19-0 tech fall in 2:53. [SH 19-13]
