Wheeling Jesuit wins Baldwin Wallace John Summa Open

February 2, 2019

BEREA, Ohio (Feb. 2) - Led by seven individual titles, the No. 4 Wheeling Jesuit University wrestling team collected the team trophy at the 33rd Annual John Summa Memorial Tournament hosted by Baldwin Wallace Saturday afternoon.

"Seven champs is outstanding," said Head Coach Danny Irwin. "But the push for more points by everyone is what really makes our coaching staff happy!" The coaching staff was able to make sort out its lineup for the final stretch of the season that includes a dual versus Seton Hill before the NCAA East Super Regional at West Liberty later this month.

"We have our starting lineup set heading into our season finale against Seton Hill and the post season," he added. "Tyler Alberts will go at 149 and Greg Brusco will be our 197. Both had solid performances winning their respective weight classes. The fact it took so long to determine is a testament to the competitors in our wrestling room."

"We had other guys who hit some personal goals today too. Marcus Jean-Baptiste broke 20+ wins on the year and we believe Devin Uzelac tied Dom Nania's single-season pin record. Also, Dante Lapitan put up some points today to finish on a high note. Too many positives to mention everything!"

"The team looks forward to our Senior night against a always tough Seton Hill. I hope the campus and community come out to give our 4 Seniors the send off that they have earned!"

INDIVIDUAL TITLE WINNERS FROM WJU:
133 - Tyler Warner
141 - Brandon Tenney
149 - Tyler Alberts
157 - Dylan Taylor
174 - Connor Craig
184 - Aidan Pasiuk
197 - Greg Brusco

Coach Irwin on seniors Tyler Houge and Nat Brown:
"Two Seniors competitive careers came to an end today. Hogue & Nat Brown have meant so much to this program. From the first day I met them they have been a couple of the most consistent workers we have had. They are selfless & represent Cardinal Culture at the highest level!"

Nat Brown on competing in his final match:
"The last match I wrestled was an emotional one. Not because of the outcome but because after the match I got a hug from everyone who was in my corner. Coaches, teammates, everyone. The feeling was overwhelming and drove me to tears due to how much they cared for me.

I have never been prouder to know such a group of men. We succeeded together, suffered together, and did everything together like a family. Looking back at all those memories I am proud to have been able to wrestle for this program.

I would especially like to thank the coaching staff. They helped me grow as a person, teaching me ways to stay motivated and how to take advantage of your day. Again, Thank you to everyone involved for helping me grow as a person throughout my four years at Wheeling Jesuit University." Tyler Houge on competing in his final match:
"Competing for the last time was a pretty special experience. I'm so happy with my wrestling career. In all honesty, I never thought I would be competing at this level when I started wrestling in 7th grade. I remember being a young kid looking for something or anything to be a part of.

When I found wrestling I became addicted to the highs and lows of competition. The humility in defeat and the overwhelming sense of achievement in victory allowed me to give every ounce of my being until the very end.

Being a Wheeling Jesuit Cardinal has given me everything I could have asked for. I now have a wonderful family of hard nosed competitors. The growth that I have been able to make at Wheeling Jesuit can't be measured but only appreciated. I love that I was given this opportunity to put my best foot forward everyday. I was pushed to become the person I was meant to be. It's been a long hard four years. I was encouraged and pushed to my limit every single day by my coaches, teammate, and family. Dan Gable says "once you've wrestled, everything else in life is easy."

Now I understand. I feel fully prepared to take on anything in life. I'm confident I will be the man that others need me to be. Thank you Wheeling Jesuit Wrestling for this opportunity."
