Re: OVC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Well said Coach Childers, I can say the same about Blenny and Coach Smith. My guys at Milton always looked forward to matching up with Blenny because we knew we were in for a battle! They are excellent technicians, well coached, always in shape and great so far as sportsmanhip goes. I don't see them...

Re: South vs Independence Predictions
I wish we could have a AAA-AA-A showdown duals match every year. Like 1-1, 2-2 with the top two teams from each division. Compelling action. Congrats to Indy and both schools for making this match happen.

Re: Has WV wrestling gone downhill as a whole?
Very good point aacoach70. You provided an insight I had not considered. Case in point, I remember back about 1994-95 or there abouts I took some of my kids to a camp in upstate PA.(Russ Houck camp now run by Gene Mills as Pin2Win camp in Estella outside Williamsport.) There was a technician there f...

Re: Rescheduled WSAZ tournament details?
Uh Milton Middle feeds Cabell Midland, or at least it is supposed to, so don't throw my old Panthers in that mix - we never got more than 2 in when I was coaching.

Re: Has WV wrestling gone downhill as a whole?
As much as I hate to say it, I have to say it has gone down. Kids just do not stick with it through high school. I have seen kids at the youth and middle school levels who were every bit as good as the kids mentioned from years past at the same age but they just disappear. I had several on my Milton...

Re: Question regarding rescheduled WSAZ
Not sure what the plans are but they have two good sized gyms. I remember when Coach Darst used to run the fine Tri State Middle School Championships event at Point Pleasant and there were about 35-40 teams there plus JV's. He used slightly smaller mats in two gyms and another room, maybe a cafeteri...

I have attended or coached in every single WSAZ Tournament since it began and before that when it was the HUPCO ... It has never been cancelled or even delayed. Those that can get there will wrestle unless I am very, very surprised.

Been in that spot many times. Schools from all over WV and other states came but we, in Cabell Co. had to beg the administration to let us travel the 15 miles to the WSAZ. On a side note, Keith Morehouse said on the six o'clock news that no matter how much snow " the show will go on because one...

Robbie is a tough one out to be sure. Just a couple of weeks back he left a tournament on a back board. I never count him out and that boy is fearless when it comes to wrestling top seeds. Good old country boy.

Re: AAA Team Poll
One also has to figure in the ever present debate - are we ranking dual teams or tournament teams. I have no doubt South is number one. That being said, a team like St. Albans or Midland looks to me like a better tournament team than Huntington but Humtington looks like a better dual team. Also, I w...

Very well entertained, Gator, with lots of goodies and snacks! We kvetch about it but it was a great chance to see many old friends in our coaching fraternity. Wrestling coaches, as you well know, get along remarkably well and all love to tell old mat stories.

George Keeney retired with 40 (yes 40) years of refereeing a couple of years ago. Great ref and good, Christian man. I had the pleasure of interviewing him at the state tournament that year and having him ref matches for multiple generations of my wrestlers.

I fully realize that one can not equate middle school to high school - a whole ' nother set of distractions - cars, jobs, girlfriends, etc. and you are 100 percent dead on about the football coaches. I have seen many kids who could realistically gotten help with college as a wrestler fall victim to t...

Re: Forfeits
I am saddened by the number of forfeits but lowering the number of weight classes is not the answer. The greatest thing about our sport is that it gives an athlete who is too small for football or basketball / too heavy perhaps for basketball or track, etc. a chance to be part of a team and have suc...

Re: West Virginia Army National Guard Duals Wrestling Tournament Pools
When I was coaching it was printed right on the coaches card that it had to be accepted at all events other than the state tournament. I guess things have changed. One thing that probably led to this (just guessing) was teams asking for coaches passes for scorekeepers, mat maids, photogs, etc. I kno...

Hicks is from Milton. He wrestled a little middle school and last year at Midland. Lineman on the football team. Not a huge heavyweight but strong, agile and quick. Nice kid and good student. Mom teaches at Milton. Wrestles much like a 195 but weighs HWT despite not carrying much body fat. Sophomore...

Just two upsets I heard about
#8 Hunter Hicks HWT(CM) over #1 Mitchell Powers (Mgtn) by fall - 1st Period
# 3 Chaston Holley 182 (CM) over #2 Logan Wotring (Mgtn)
If I get more I will post.

Re: West Virginia Army National Guard Duals Wrestling Tournament Pools
All I can tell you is Midland is 4-0 heading into the last dual of the night. In a side note Midland's HWT Hunter Hicks is 4-0 all pins including a first round fall over #1 Ranked Mitchell Powers of Morgantown.
