What if the new classifications were applied to last year?

Postby sPlayTull » Mon Nov 23, 2015 4:43 pm

Several weight classes would have turned out quite differently on the podium last year had the new classifications been in place. 132 & 220 would have definitely been interesting, along with 182 & 195!

Check it out:

AA 132 - state champs Will Cox (Indy) & Bryce Humphreys (Win) might have battled it out in the finals for 1st
AA 138 - Shady Spring's Zach Clark (6th AAA) would have been in the mix to place
AA 145 - Winfield's Evan Fairchild (6th AAA) would have been in the mix to place
AA 160 - Nitro's Terrel jackson (4th AAA) & Point's Austin Rutter (1 win from placing) would have been in the mix to place
AA 170 - Point's Hunter White (6th AAA) would have been in the mix to place
AA 182 - LC's Kyle Rogers (2nd AAA) & Point's Jon Peterson (5th AAA) would have shaken up the AA bracket
AA 195 - Point's Grant Safford (2nd AAA) & LC's Ryan Carson (3rd AAA) would have shaken up the bracket as well
AA 220 - state champs Tyler Arnett (NM) & Hunter Skeens (Nitro) might have battled it out in the finals for 1st. Also, Winfield's Noah Julian (4th AAA) & Point's Tanner Hill (1 win from placing) would have been in the mix to place
AA 285 - Point's Jacob Duncan (1 win from placing) would have been in the mix to place

AAA 132 - Lucas Simpkins (2nd) & Jordan Allen (3rd) might have battled it out in the finals for 1st
AAA 138 - 1 win from placing, Jordan Hamlin (Univ) or Brad Fournier (Was) might have placed
AAA 145 - Jack Garcia (Buc) or Anthony Atkins (StA) might have placed
AAA 160 - Nick Whitmore (SpV) might have placed
AAA 170 - Josiah Solak (GrE) might have placed
AAA 182 - Stefan Gibbs (Hunt) & Chris Worley (Woodrow) might have placed
AAA 195 - Noah Lotter (Buc) & Brice Pomeroy (Riv) might have placed
AAA 220 - Ryan Mills (hunt) & Tommy Hall (South) might have battled it out in the finals for 1st. Also Holstein (Riv) might have placed

Also, AAA 106 would have featured a grand total of (15) wrestlers among the 29 schools.

Regions 3 and 4 would have had forfeits at the state tournament, while parkersburg's Kaleb Sams would have been the only 106 staying home due to (5) 106-lb wrestlers in region 1.

113 would not have been much better, with only 17 wrestlers. here is the breakdown by region (which may change by next year)
R1: 6
R2: 4
R3: 5
R4: 2

Region 4 would have had (2) forfeits, while (3) wrestlers from regions 1 and 3 would have been left out.

Hope the WVSSAC takes initiative to address this issue before next season.

AA-A 106 would have had (28) wrestlers vieing for 16 slots, while 113 would have had (26).

The days of state tournament forfeits in AA might be over, while in AAA they could become an epidemic.

It seems a little out of the box, but I would like to see the weight classes with limited participants put entries from other regions into the state tournament rather than give a forfeit at states. For example, if there are 5 106 pounders in region 1 and 3 in region 4, let the 5th place wrestler in region 1 go in the place of the forfeit, therefore filling the bracket at state.

How about going to one 32 man bracket for every weight class and crowning one state champion. With AA/A having 66 teams and AAA only having 29 teams in my opinion its time to go one bracket. In the event there would be a forfeit in any weight class the fifth place wrestler from a predetermined region would fill in where another region was missing a wrestler.

I think one division would definitely be the way to go and give the state serious legitimacy. CA only has 1 division in wrestling, and I am sure there are others.

Wanting 1 class....just another example of crushing small town schools.

It would be easy to have one bracket for all and award separate A, AA and AAA team titles. How would that be crushing small schools?

Mscoach64 by ADDING a team championship to the single a schools it crushes small town schools? One class individually, three classes for team championship. If I were a small town school coach the idea would get me excited to get MORE kids out for wrestling, maybe I could put a banner on the gym wall now that I didn't have to compete against double a schools.

I thought you guys were saying 1 class for all....like Fayetteville, Roane, and Parkersburg would all be in one class total.
