AAA Region Team Battle

Postby KDunbar » Thu Feb 17, 2022 6:42 pm

No one is talking about it, but the Region 1 AAA team battle looks pretty interesting between Wheeling Park and University (with University finally having Dom Parker back in its line-up). If everything goes according to the seeds and you apply placement points, you get Park winning 175 to 159. However, there are at least 3 possible championship finals that should be real close and if they go against Park (126 pounds Wilson, B-U over Lowe, Park, 152 pounds Parker, Univ over Velas, Park, and 182 pounds Wallace, JM over Nixon, Park) then University would be ahead 165 to 163. I'm not predicting those 3 "upset" in the finals, just thinking they should likely be real close matches based on previous meetings, etc. Shoot, even if Nixon places first at 182 pounds and Taylor, Univ "upsets" Wallace, JM in the semis then University still wins 168 to 167. Of course, some of the Park kids could actually place higher than their seeds or University could have some place lower, which is why they will go ahead and actually wrestle the tournament. Point is, it should be real exciting and bonus points for pins, etc. could be the difference. Too bad all the regionals are all at the same time. Maybe Bearhugger could get that changed ;) . Good luck to both teams.

I am surprised WP vs University is that close. University is without their regular 285. I glanced through things yesterday at the state level and WP is the favorite going in.
Holy smokes. Braxton Amos works out with a landmine now!!!!!!

The loss of their 285 pounder will have more of an impact at the state tournament. It most likely just switched to University placing 3rd instead of second and Park moving up to second in that weight class. However, that's a 6 point swing that would have made things even tighter. Interestingly the replacement 285 pounder is a Senior with a 33-9 record.

I don’t about that. 285 Morg vs UNI match has been close and heavy weights sometimes “fall” into wins. It’s a big loss for them but University does reload well.

Region 1 tournament is definitely going to be fun. There’s some good semi-finals matchups as well.

You're right. I didn't really look it up but later was wondering what the matches between the two of them had been like. Still they are
really going to miss his points at the state tournament if they sre going to overtake Park. There University will be pressed harder to get significant points out of their guys who will likely finish 3rd in the region where Park will likely have moe 2nd place finishers who may be better scorers at the state level.
