Oak Glen picked up three dual wins in a quadrangular meet with John Marshall, North Marion and Buckeye Local Saturday, at Buckeye Local. Oak Glen runs its season dual record to 11-1. The Golden Bears defeated Buckeye Local 52-21, John Marshall 46-24, and North Marion 48-13. John Marshall went 2-1 on the day, defeating Buckeye Local 49-22 and North Marion 37-23. Buckeye Local defeated North Marion 36-32.

Although the team scores went strongly for Oak Glen, the day featured a number of individual matchups between OVAC placers and state-ranked wrestlers.

Four Oak Glen wrestlers went 3-0 on the afternoon: Troy Eckleberry (119), Joel Paolo (135), Ethan Dray (130), Nick McAvoy (145), Zach Six (160/171) and Doug Murray (285.) Cody Miller (152) and Justin Greathouse (215) were 2-0. Danny Rowland (103), Ryan Asbury (125), Paden Potts (140) and Zac Montero (189) all were 2-1.

Highlights included a matchup between Troy Eckleberry and Buckeye Local's Mike Kendjorski, who were seeded 1-2 at 119 pounds in the recent OVAC tournament, but did not meet when Beaver Local's Mitch Thompson knocked Kendjorski into consolations, where he finished third. In Saturday's match, Eckleberry took a 1-0 lead on a penalty point in the first period, got an escape in the third period and a takedown with 10 seconds left to post a 4-0 win. Eckleberry, ranked first in W.Va. in A-AA, won an 11-3 major decision over North Marion's Ryan Hinerman, ranked fifth in AAA.

Ethan Dray (fourth at OVAC) came back from a 6-3 deficit to score a 14-6 major decision over Buckeye Local's Brandon Bartrug (eighth at OVAC) at 130 pounds.

The 135-pound matchup between Oak Glen's Joel Paolo and John Marshall's Ben Pockl featured a rematch between wrestlers who finished 4-5 at OVAC. Paolo had prevailed 9-4 in the OVAC semifinal consolation match, and Saturday won again, 7-1, over a visibly agitated Pockl. Pockl is ranked sixth in the state in AAA, Paolo fifth in A-AA.

Paolo posted a 5-0 decision over North Marion's Storm Barker, ranked seventh in AAA.

A 140-pound match between Oak Glen's Paden Potts and Buckeye Local's Mike Slaga paired wrestlers who were ranked in the OVAC (eighth and third seeds, respectively) but did not place. Potts took the lead 2-1 in the second period, but gave up a takedown and near fall, losing 6-2.

Oak Glen's Ryan Asbury (125 pounds) ranked second in the state in A-AA, took on two state-ranked AAA opponents. Asbury won a 5-0 decision over John Marshall's Jeremy Howard, ranked second in AAA, but was reversed with 20 seconds to go in a back-and-forth match to lose 7-6 to Brandon Ramsey of North Marion, ranked sixth.

At 152 pounds, Oak Glen's Cody Miller, ranked second in the state in A-AA, scored a second period fall on John Marshall's Dannie Ruza, ranked seventh in AAA.

At 160 pounds, Zack Six of the Golden Bears, ranked second in the state in A-AA, won a 9-2 decision over John Marshall's Kason Melchiori, ranked fifth in AAA. He had beaten Melchiori 7-0 at the Brooke Classic this season.

Oak Glen's Danny Rowland, an unseeded 103-pounder who finished eighth at the OVAC tournament, met two AAA state-ranked opponents in Trent Fancher (seventh ranked) of North Marion and Eric Beck (eighth ranked) of John Marshall. Rowland had upset seventh seed Beck at OVAC. Their match Saturday was tied 2-2 when Rowland pinned Beck at 5:28. Rowland lost a major decision to Fancher, 11-2.

Oak Glen's next match is at home Wednesday against East Liverpool. It will be senior night. The Bears will travel to Worthington next weekend for the Cardinal Invitational Tournament.
