OKLAHOMA’S BEAN IS VOTED OUTSTANDING WRESTLER IN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL OPEN WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

New York wins state team title

Raleigh, N.C. June 20-22, 1998

RALEIGH, N.C. - Three-time Oklahoma state champion Matt Bean of Mustang High School was voted the Outstanding Wrestler of the inaugural National High School Open Wrestling Championships, which concluded Monday afternoon at the Dorton Arena.

Bean’s third-period takedown was the difference in a 3-2 victory over fellow Oklahoman Matt Grice of Harrah High in the title round’s feature match at 145 pounds. Bean, who will be a senior next year, and Grice, a junior and a two-time state champion, are a combined 15-0 in combining to win five state titles and have just two career losses between them. New York easily won the state team title with 267 points, followed by Oklahoma (192), South Carolina (172), Maryland (171), and host North Carolina (146) in the top five team standings. New York and Oklahoma each had three champions. Mike Messina (130 pounds), an unbeaten state champion for Hauppage High last year as a sophomore, Keith Pickell (103) of Ellenville, and Nick Richetti (119) of Waverly were New York’s champions. Bean’s teammate at Mustang High, Ross Lassley (275), and Mike Mitchell (152) of Midwest City also won titles for Oklahoma. Pickell, Lassley, and Donnie DeFilippis (140) of New Providence, N.J. scored pins to win their title matches. Adam Britt (135) of Mechanicsville, Va. scored a technical fall, winning by the 15-point slaughter rule, in his title match.

Sponsored by the Lewisburg, Pa.-based National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) and HealthSouth, the National Open High School Wrestling Championships attracted an amazing 515 competitors from 33 states in its first year, including 37 state champions. The tournament is the first-ever national championship event conducted in the scholastic style for high school wrestlers in all four high school grades, 9 through 12. The top eight wrestlers in each of the 14 standard high school weight classes earned All-America status.

The NHSCA and HealthSouth also conduct the highly-successful National High School Wrestling Championships, a senior-only event which attracted a record 692 competitors from 47 states to Pittsburgh, Pa. in March.
