West Virginia High School Wrestling

18th Annual West Virginia State Wrestling Championship

at Mountaineer Fieldhouse, Morgantown
February 26-27, 1965

The 1965 Tournament continued wrestling's boom in popularity as a new record of 27 schools were represented at the State Championship along with 72 wrestlers. The tournament also expanded from five regions in 1964 to six regions in 1965 with only regional champions advancing to the state.

With two byes per weight class, coaches elected to have the top seeds wrestle the lower seeds in the first round to maximize advancement points and let the middle seeded wrestlers take the byes. The tournament also dropped the consolation bracket and went to single elimination with no wrestle backs for third place. The combination of third and fourth seeds receiving opening round byes and the elimination of scoring in a consolation bracket may have effected the final team outcome.

Shady Springs and Berkeley Springs both qualified six wrestlers for the tournament and were co-favorites to win with top challenges expected to come from Charleston, Morgantown and Parkersburg with five participants each. Two-time defending champions Shady Springs had high expectations to be the second school to win three consecutive team titles.

Shady Springs and Berkeley Springs both qualified three wrestlers for the finals but fell behind first place Parkersburg who had qualified four individuals after Friday night's semi-finals. Charleston and Morgantown fell off the pace with two finalists.

Berkeley Springs had the best chance to overtake Parkersburg if they could win all three of their championship matches with pins but Parkersburg's won two of their four matches to clinch the team title.

Four wrestlers returned in 1965 to defend their championships from the previous year but only three survived the two day event. They were Shady Spring's Mason Epperly at 112, Berkeley Springs' Steve Clark at 177 and Parkersburg's Bill Kupfner at unlimited. Thirty five wrestlers entered the tournament undefeated and nine were able to keep their records intact.
