WAYNESBURG NIPS WEST LIBERTY WRESTLERS

November 12, 2014

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Two-time defending Presidents Athletic Conference champion Waynesburg University eked out an 18-16 victory against the West Liberty University wrestling team Wednesday night in a mutual season debut at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

The host Yellowjackets squeezed out a pair of one-point decisions and won another match in overtime, which proved to be the difference in a see-saw affair which featured two ties and three lead changes in the first six weight classes.

Zach Brown got Coach Brian Davis' Hilltoppers off to a good start with an 8-2 win at 125 but Waynesburg answered with a pin at 133 for a 6-3 lead.

West Liberty 141-pounder Cole Nace tied it at 6 with an 8-1 win against D.J. Grindel and Joel Paolo's 4-1 win against Chris Little gave the visitors a 9-6 advantage.

A 12-7 victory by Waynesburg's nationally-ranked Luke Lohr at 157 forged the final tie of the night at 9-9. The Hilltoppers' DeMadre Turner battled the Yellowjackets' Derek Hull into overtime in the match of the night at 165 only to see Hull catch a flash takedown with back points just before the end of the first sudden victory period for a 7-2 win.

Waynesburg's nationally-ranked Sam Guidi pulled out a 4-3 win against Jordan Nolan at 174 to give the hosts a 15-9 lead heading into the final three matches of the night but West Liberty wasn't finished as Danny Doyle came up big at 184 with a 9-1 major decision against Austin Davidson, trimming the margin to 15-13.

The Hilltoppers couldn't quite get over the hump, however, as the Yellowjackets pulled out yet another one-point decision at 197 pounds for an 18-13 lead. In the final match of the night, West Liberty 285-pounder Aaron Silverio dominated Greg Kumer over the final two periods but his 8-2 victory left the Black and Gold a couple of points short on the scoreboard.

Coach Davis and his Hilltoppers make their first home appearance on Friday when they welcome Super Region One rival Pitt-Johnstown to the ASRC for a 7 p.m. match.
