No. 12 Hilltopper Matmen Rally Past Waynesburg

January 30, 2010

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The No. 12-ranked West Liberty University wrestling team spotted Waynesburg (Pa.) College an early lead Saturday night before roaring back with wins in five of the last six matches to sting the Yellow Jackets, 21-16, before an appreciative crowd at the ASRC.

Waynesburg used a forfeit, a major decision and a decision to grab a 13-4 lead after the first four matches.

At that point, Nick Wykoff’s major decision at 133 pounds accounted for the only WLU scoring of the night. Wykoff improved to 20-3 on the season.

But Coach Brian Davis’s Hilltoppers wasted little time hitting the comeback trail as back-to-back decisions by 157-pounder Brian Leggett and 165-pounder Jarrod Shaw trimmed the deficit to 13-10.

Matt Littleton gave the hosts their first lead of the night, 15-13, when he needed just 6:03 to wrap up a technical fall in his 174-pound match against Cody Catalina.

Waynesburg went back on top briefly, 16-15, with a decision at 184 pounds but the lead proved short-lived.

West Liberty 197-pounder Mitch Knapp upped his season record to 23-4 with a 9-3 decision against Matt Zimmerman and heavyweight J.D. Ramsey clinched the victory with a 7-2 decision against Melvin Warrick.

The Hilltoppers return to action on Feb. 6 when they take on Ashland and East Stroudsburg in the Ashland Duals.
