No. 15 Hilltopper Matmen Rally Past Seton Hill

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The No. 15-ranked West Liberty University wrestling team split a triangular meet at Kutztown (Pa.) University on Saturday.
Coach Brian Davis’s Hilltoppers rallied to a 25-14 victory against Seton Hill after dropping a 29-11 decision to the host Golden Bears.
West Liberty found itself on the short end of a 14-0 deficit after the first four matches against Seton Hill but the Black and Gold bounced back with six consecutive wins to salvage the split.
Andy Church and Seth Phalen got the Hilltoppers on the board with back-to-back wins at 157 and 165, respectively.
Jarrod Shaw’s major decision at 174 put WLU back in the hunt and when Matt Littleton eked out a 5-4 decision at 184, West Liberty had cut the gap to 14-13.
The Hilltoppers took a 19-14 lead with a forfeit at 197 and Davis opted to send Mitch Knapp, West Liberty’s All-American 197-pounder, out to wrestle the 285-pound finale.
That decision paid off when Knapp won by injury default, clinching the dual meet win for the Hilltopper squad.
Phalen, Shaw, Knapp and Derrick Williams (184) collected decisions for West Liberty during the Kutztown match but it wasn’t enough to overcome another early deficit.
The Hilltoppers will host West Virginia Tech Wednesday night in the first home dual meet of the second semester. The first match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the ASRC.
