Two West Liberty Seniors Place at Nationals

March 10, 2012

PUEBLO, Colo. – A pair of West Liberty seniors finished their careers as NCAA Division II All-Americans here Saturday night by placing in the finals of the 2012 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships on the Pueblo campus of Colorado State University.

Jarrod Shaw came up just one win shy of winning a national championship for head coach Brian Davis's Hilltoppers, settling for runner-up honors at 157 pounds, while JD Ramsey placed 8th in the 285-pound division.

Shaw (23-6), a senior from Brooke High School who entered the tournament ranked No. 7 nationally in his weight class, saw his streak of narrow victories come to an end in Saturday night's 157-pound final against No. 2-ranked T.J. Hepburn of Nebraska-Kearney.

Hepburn (36-3), who had knocked off the nation's No. 1-ranked wrestler in Saturday morning's semifinals, caught Shaw with a takedown in the first period and was able to finish off the match with a fall at 2:19 of the opening frame.

Ramsey (34-7), a former high school standout at Cabell Midland, battled Newberry's Jake Elkins into overtime in their 7th-Place Match at 285 before Elkins pulled away to an 8-3 decision.

Nebraska-Kearney won the team championship with 107 points. St. Cloud State, which entered the meet ranked No. 1 in the nation, took runner-up honors with 95 points. West Liberty notched a Top 20 finish, taking 17th place with 22 points.
