Toppers Open at Terrapin Duals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The West Liberty University wrestling team made its 2015-16 debut on Sunday with a trio of matches in the Terrapin Duals, hosted by the University of Maryland.
Coach Mitch Smith's Hilltoppers dropped a 41-0 decision to NCAA Division I Pitt but battled Kutztown (Pa.) to the wire before coming up short, 25-12. The Black and Gold closed out the event with a 24-9 loss to NCAA Division I Davidson.
Zach Brown got West Liberty off to a good start in the Kutztown match with a 10-6 win at 125 pounds for a 3-0 lead.
After a loss at 133, Josh Cornell's 9-8 thriller at 141 pounds put WLU back on top by a 6-3 count.
Kutztown reeled off back-to-back wins at 149 and 157 to grab a 10-6 advantage but the Hilltoppers weren't finished.
DeMadre Turner got West Liberty back on the board with a 4-2 win at 165 pounds and the Hilltoppers moved out to a 12-10 lead when Daniel Carpenter pulled away to a 9-5 win at 174 pounds.
A major decision followed by a fall and a forfeit at heavyweight enabled Kutztown to walk away with the win.
Brown and Cornell also helped WLU move out to an early lead in the final match of the day against Davidson. Brown posted a 5-4 win at 125 while Cornell also eked out a 5-4 decision, with his win coming in overtime.
A pair of one-point decisions went the other way in the heavier weights, however, and the Wildcats were able to pull away for the double-digit win.
Turner came through with an impressive 9-4 win at 165 pounds for his second victory of the day but it was too little, too late.
The West Liberty wrestling team opens the home portion of its schedule on Nov. 12 when the Hilltoppers host Waynesburg (Pa.) in a 7 p.m. match at the ASRC.
