Seton Hill Rallies Past WLU Wrestlers

Januaruy 16, 2016

GREENSBURG, Pa. Seton Hill came up with a couple of late wins Saturday night to come from behind for a 26-15 victory in an Atlantic Region dual meet against the West Liberty University wrestling team.

Coach Mitch Smith's Hilltoppers (4-9) got off to a flying start against the Griffins (5-2), who entered the match ranked No. 6 in the Atlantic Region.

Zach Brown opened with an overtime decision at 125 pounds and Bryce Humphreys followed up with a late pin at 133 for a 9-0 West Liberty lead.

Seton Hill won the next three matches to go up 11-9 but WLU's David Schlieper pitched a 4-0 shutout at 165 to put the Black and Gold back on top and DeMadre Turner regionally-ranked at 165 pushed the margin to 15-11 with a 10-7 victory in the 174-pound match.

The Griffins wrapped up the match with wins at 184 and 197 to go along with a forfeit at 285 but the Hilltoppers' head coach saw plenty of positives from the evening's work.

"I believe we're getting better and I'm seeing a lot of progress," Smith said. "We won four of the nine matches contested tonight even though we were bumping some guys up to higher weight classes against the sixth-ranked team in the region.

"More and more I'm seeing our guys buying into the system and coming together as a team. We have things headed in the right direction and I'm convinced we'll continue to improve heading down the stretch."

The Hilltoppers return to the match next weekend when they compete in the West Virginia Collegiate Invitational in Wheeling.
