WLU Wrestlers Come Up Short in Triangular

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University wrestling team dropped a pair of matches in a Sunday afternoon triangular at the ASRC.
Coach Mitch Smith's youthful Hilltoppers came out on the short end of a 31-9 count in their first match against No. 15-ranked Seton Hill before losing a heartbreaking 22-21 decision to Alderson-Broaddus in the nightcap. Seton Hill downed A-B, 37-10, in the first match of the day.
In WLU's match against Seton Hill, Bryce Humphreys pulled the Hilltoppers into an early 3-3 tie with an impressive 10-4 win against Tyler Kenney at 133 pounds but the nationally-ranked Griffins swept the next six weight classes to clinch the win.
West Liberty finished strong with back-to-back wins in the final two matches. Garrett Vulcano scored a 7-4 decision against Jake Temple at 197 and Chris Cook outlasted Lou Maser, 4-1, in the 285-pound finale.
The A-B match got off to a disappointing start when senior standout Zach Brown had to default his 125-pound match late in the first period due to injury.
Humphreys got the hosts on the board at 133 with a 7-3 win against Cody Buchanan but a forfeit at 141 pounds put the visiting Battlers ahead to stay.
The Black and Gold didn't go down without a fight as Josh Cornell delivered a strong 12-6 decision against Matt Harris in their 149-pound match and Vulcano picked up his second win of the day at 197, with a 5-1 victory against James Bennett.
West Liberty also collected forfeit points at 165 and 285 but it wasn't quite enough to prevent Alderson-Broaddus from escaping the ASRC with the one-point win.
The Hilltoppers travel to Clarion, Pa. next Sunday for another triangular. The Black and Gold will take on the host Golden Eagles and NCAA Division I Hofstra with the first match set for 1 p.m.
