Nationally-Ranked Falcons Power Past WLU

January 27, 2017

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University wrestling team ran into a buzzsaw here Friday night as No. 6-ranked Notre Dame swept all 10 matches in a convincing victory at the ASRC.

The visiting Falcons, who are also No. 1 in the Super Region One coaches' rankings and feature no less than five nationally-ranked wrestlers, lived up to the hype with a dominant performance against Coach Mitch Smith's rebuilding Hilltoppers.

The Notre Dame grapplers posted four first-period pins and a pair of technical falls to go along with three major decisions.

Garrett Vulcano had the closest match for the hosts, battling the Falcons' Tony Vezzetti to the wire in a highly-competitive 197-pound bout only to see Vezzetti come up with a takedown in the final 30 seconds to clinch a 9-5 decision.

The Black and Gold were also docked two team points for an equipment violation following the 125-pound match.

West Liberty will be back in action on Wednesday night when the Black and Gold host Ohio Valley in the final home match of the season at the ASRC. Wrestling begins at 7 p.m.
