Big Day for West Liberty Wrestlers
WASHINGTON, Pa. – The West Liberty University wrestling team breezed to a trio of impressive victories here Saturday afternoon during a quadrangular meet hosted by Washington & Jefferson.
Coach Mitch Smith's Hilltoppers kicked things off with a 37-6 romp past Penn State-Behrend before handing Thomas More (Ohio) a 41-4 defeat. The Black and Gold closed out the meet with a 34-18 victory against the host Presidents.
In the opening match against PSU-Behrend, West Liberty got a 14-0 major decision from Steven Slack at 125, picked up a pair of forfeits at 133 and 141, and never looked back.
Logan Arneson (149), Josh Cornell (157) and Chris Cook (184) notched decisions for the Black and Gold while 174-pounder Chase Morgan highlighted the victory with a first-period fall.
The Hilltoppers' dominance was even more in evidence against Thomas More. Corey Secrist (125) and Darius Bunch (133) got the match off to a flying start with back-to-back major decisions before Miles Mazik (141) and Tanner Sutton (149) scored first- and second-period falls, respectively, to put WLU on top by a 20-0 tally after just four matches.
Cornell, Morgan and Cook added to the total with decision wins and West Liberty finished with a flourish, picking up pins from Logan Kemp (197) and Ronnie D'Amico (285) in the final two bouts.
Washington & Jefferson battled West Liberty on even terms through the first seven weight classes, rallying to forge an 18-18 deadlock heading into the 184-pound match.
Cook put the Hilltoppers ahead to stay with his third win of the day, a 12-1 major decision against William Oberschelp.
Kemp followed with a fall at 197 against W&J's Marty Shulik and D'Amico came up big again with his second straight first-period fall, needing just 92 seconds to finish off the Senators' Derek Allen. Jacob Ramsey also had a big win, picking up a fall in the third period of his 165-pound match.
