Multiple Placers for West Liberty at BW Invitational

COMPLETE RESULTS

BEREA, Ohio – Eight members of the No. 12-ranked West Liberty wrestling team earned a spot on the podium here Saturday as Coach Danny Irwin's Hilltoppers made their presence felt at the BW Invitational, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University at the Lou Higgins Center.

Jett Pattison advanced to the championship match at 133 pounds before settling for runner-up honors while Corey Secrist (125) and Isaiah Myers (184) notched third place finishes in their weight classes.

In addition, Jacob Simpson (141), Blake Miller (157) and Garrett Cook (184) placed fifth while a pair of WLU redshirts, competing unattached, also placed. Marcus Jean-Baptiste was third at 141 and Ronnie D'Amico was fourth at 197.

It's back to dual meet action for the Black and Gold on Sunday as they head to Mount Olive, N.C. to compete in the Mount Olive Duals.

West Liberty will take on No. 21-ranked UNC-Pembroke at noon before going up against the host Trojans in a 3 p.m. match. Here's a look at how the Hilltopper placers fared at Baldwin Wallace on Saturday, broken down by weight class.

WEST LIBERTY PLACERS

125 Pounds

Returning junior standout Corey Secrist was an upset victim in the opening round of the championship bracket but reeled off four straight wins in the wrestlebacks to earn the third spot on the podium. Secrist powered past Adam Kates of Case Western Reserve, 8-4, in the Third Place match.

133 Pounds

Jett Pattison, a true freshman from West Alexander, Pa., made an impressive run to the championship match at 133. He got things started with a fall in his first-round match before coasting to a 7-1 nod in the quarterfinals. Pattison outgunned Baldwin Wallace's Zach Anderson, 9-6, in the semis before falling to top-seeded Chad Craft, also of Baldwin Wallace, in the title tilt. 141 Pounds

Jacob Simpson, a true freshman from Morgantown, W.Va., advanced to the championship semis at 141 before falling to eventual champion Chandler Minnard of Ashland and settling for a fifth-place finish. Junior Marcus Jean-Baptiste, wrestling unattached while sitting out his redshirt season, earned a third-place finish with a 9-7 decision against Mercyhurst NorthEast's Isaiah Smith in their Third Place match.

157 Pounds

Blake Miller, a sophomore transfer from Wheeling, dropped into the consolation bracket early after being upended in his opening match of the day but worked his way through the wrestlebacks to earn a spot in the place matches. Miller defeated Cameron Jenkins of Ashland by medical forfeit in their Fifth Place match. 184 Pounds

The Hilltoppers had multiple placers at 184 pounds. Senior vet Isaiah Myers dropped a tough overtime decision to eventual runner-up Lucas Salmon of Baldwin Wallace in his first match of the day but rolled through the consolation bracket to finish third. Myers capped his afternoon with a 12-3 major decision against Ohio Wesleyan's Abraham Spurlock in their Third Place match.

Garrett Cook, an impressive true freshman from Weirton, W.Va., fought his way into the championship semis before falling to eventual champion Aidan Pasiuk of Ashland. Cook pitched a 2-0 shutout against Ashland's Brahm Ginter in their Fifth Place match to earn a spot on the podium.

197 Pounds

Junior Ronnie D'Amico, wrestling unattached while sitting out a redshirt season, picked up a couple of bonus point wins to place fourth at 197 pounds. D'Amico scored a technical fall and advanced via injury default before falling to Baldwin Wallace's Doug Byrne in the Third Place match.
