WVU Tops Penn State 23-15

(University Park, Pa., Jan. 5, 2002) The No. 17 ranked Penn State wrestling team found a tough start to the home dual meet season Saturday in Rec Hall as the Nittany Lions fell to No. 20 Pittsburgh (18-12) and No. 8 West Virginia (23-15) in double-dual action. Penn State falls to 1-3 on the year, while Pittsburgh improved to 3-1 and West Virginia to 2-1 on the year.

The Nittany Lions opened the day with a razor close loss to Pittsburgh in their first dual meet of the new year.

The West Virginia match was not nearly as close as Penn State notched just three wins against the Mountaineers, one being a forfeit in the final bout. The Lions opened with a 9-5 victory by No. 11 ranked Josh Moore over Brandon Lauer at 133 pounds, but West Virginia took over from there. The Mountaineers reeled off six straight victories, two by major decision, to charge to a 20-3 lead. The most notable victory came at 141 where No. 18 Shane Cunanan upset No. 17 Scott Moore with a major decision, 16-6, victory. Four more ranked Mountaineers posted wins before unranked freshman Ryan Wilman pulled a stunning upset of Penn State's Becks at 184, 3-2. Senior Pete Mielnik gave Penn State some life with a 5:37 fall over Brent Miller at 197 pounds, but Mountaineer heavyweight Ryan Kehler officially closed the door with a 3-1 decision over senior Kevin Shippos. With the match in hand West Virginia forfeited the final bout at 125 for the final margin.
