WVU DEFEATS PENN STATE, 22-10

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (January 6, 2001) West Virginia's return to the WVU Coliseum was a memorable one as the Mountaineers (1-1) defeated Penn State (2-2) for just the sixth time in school history. WVU is now 6-21 lifetime versus the Nittany Lions.

Freshman Greg Jones, a Slickville, Pa., native defeated Penn State's Mark Becks 10-5 at 174 pounds, to secure the win for the Mountaineers with the score 19-10. Jones, the younger brother of WVU's three-time All-American Vertus Jones, is now 8-0 on the year.

Penn State, wrestling its second dual meet of the day (they lost to Pitt 18-15 in Pittsburgh at noon), jumped to an early lead when WVU's Martius Harding was decisioned by Dave Heckard 13-10 at 197 pounds. But the Mountaineers quickly took the lead, 4-3, when heavyweight Ryan Kehler, ranked third in the nation, major decisioned Penn State's Bob Jones 13-3. Kehler is now 18-2 on the season.

The Mountaineers then lost two of the next three matches to trail 10-7. But 149 pound freshman Anthony Regalbuto, a native of Martinsburg, W.Va., won the first of five straight matches to seal the victory for West Virginia with his 7-4 decision over Adam Shepler. That tied the score at 10 apiece. Regalbuto is now 3-3 on the year.

No. 15 Joe Carr defeated Aaron Wright 6-5, to up his record to 9-4 at 157 pounds while, redshirt sophomore Tom McMath won his 17th victory of the season with a 7-4 victory of Doc Vecchio at 165.

The Mountaineers are back in action January 12-13, at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. Their next home dual meet is February 2 against nationally ranked Virginia Tech.
