WRESTLERS SUFFER FIRST EWL LOSS OF SEASON TO PITT

MORGANTOWN, W.Va., (February, 12, 2000) No. 17 West Virginia lost to No. 25 Pitt, 20-14, Saturday night at the Shell Building on senior night. The loss is the first for the Mountaineers in the EWL this season.

The match came down to the final bout between senior Martius Harding (Baltimore, Md.) and Pitt's Dan Stine, with the score 17-14, in favor of the Panthers. Harding lost to Stine in a 4-1 decision, giving Pitt its sixth straight victory on the season and second straight versus the Mountaineers.

West Virginia (5-3-1, 4-1-1) won the first two matches of the evening, starting with No. 4 Sean Hage's (Powder Springs, Ga.) 14-1 major decision of Matt Mueller at heavyweight, before the Panthers (9-5, 4-2) rallied for three straight victories at 133, 141 and 149.

The highlight of the evening, however, was No. 2 Vertus Jones's (Slickville, Pa.) 21-6 technical fall over Pitt's Fabian Sciullo. Jones, who is 22-0 on the season, set the all-time consecutive wins streak at West Virginia at 24 with his victory (he posted two victories at the end of last season at the NCAA tournament). He replaces Scott Collins's mark of 23 set in 1991. His victory also ties him for eighth on West Virginia's all-time career wins list with a mark of 87-19.

Sophomore Joe Carr (Lexington, Ky.), ranked 15th, decisioned No. 13 Mike Ziska. The victory is Carr's team-leading 23rd on the year. West Virgina is back in action, Friday, February 20, at Edinboro, at 7:30 p.m.
