HAMPTON, Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team bowed out of the Virginia Duals when it dropped a 20-16 match to Columbia at the Hampton Coliseum on Saturday, Jan. 14, in Hampton, Va.

The Mountaineers (1-4) dropped bouts at the 125, 165, 174 and 184-pound weight classes and was forced to forfeit the 141-pound weight class due to Brandon Rader not being able to wrestle due to injury.

WVU did look solid in its other bouts though as it took five wins on the morning. Senior Seth Lisa got back on track after a pair of tough outings yesterday by downing Matt DeLorenzo in the 133-pound bout 4-2. Lisa trailed 2-1 through the first period but recorded an escape and takedown in the second to get his eighth win of the season.

Freshman David Jauregui stayed perfect on the weekend with a 12-7 decision over David Sickles in the 149-pound bout. His win was followed by senior Matt Lebe who also won his third match of the weekend by defeating Tyler Thurgood 6-2 at 157-pounds.

After a trio of losses at the 165, 174 and 184-pound bouts Mountaineers Jared Villers and Matt Holsopple gave the team a solid finish as they both recorded wins. Villers put on the most dominating display of the afternoon by scoring an 11-3 major decision over Orrin Kleinhenz. The Akron, Ohio, native led by as much as 10 before Kleinhenz got on the board.

Junior Matt Holsopple ended the dual meet by pulling off a 4-3 decision over John Grando. The Sharpsville, Pa., native fell behind 2-0 on an early takedown but closed Grando’s lead with an escape and then answered with a takedown of his own. He later added another point on an escape.

The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Jan. 20, when they open up EWL competition by hosting Bloomsburg. Wrestling begins at 7 p.m.
