CLEVELAND – The West Virginia University wrestling team wrapped up its dual meet regular season with a 24-12 road victory over Cleveland State on Sunday, Feb. 19, at Woodling Gymnasium.

WVU (6-6, 5-1 EWL) claimed wins in six of the 10 bouts on the day against CSU (6-8, 2-4 EWL).

After Cleveland State earned four points on a major in the 125-pound bout, senior 133-pounder Seth Lisa got the Mountaineers rolling. The Northampton, Pa., native trailed 2-1 heading into the third period, but scored five points in the final two minutes to win a 6-2 decision.

Freshman Brandon Rader followed up his dominating performance at Edinboro the night before with yet another one against CSU’s Mike Hurley. The Parkersburg, W.Va., native took a 6-4 lead through the first period and added two more in the second on a reversal. Rader finished the match with 3:03 in riding time to earn another point and come away with a 9-4 victory.

David Jauregui finished the sweep of Cleveland State’s Hurley brothers when he won a 7-3 decision over Ryan Hurley. The freshman led 2-1 after one period and rode Hurley the entire second period. In the third the Santa Ana, Calif., native scored on a pair of takedowns.

No. 2-rated Matt Lebe came back in a big way on Sunday by scoring a 10-2 major decision in his bout against Victer Crenshaw. The Jeannette, Pa., native took a 4-1 lead in the first period and took off from there, riding Crenshaw for much of the rest of the match and tallying a pair of takedowns and an escape.

The Mountaineers gained total control of the match when Cleveland State’s David Gilkey was disqualified in the 174-pound bout against Kurt Brenner. With Brenner leading 4-2 in the second period, Gilkey threw Brenner to the mat out of bounds by his neck. Official John Mulgrove called the match at that point, awarding WVU six team points for the forfeit and deducting two team points from the Vikings.

Jared Villers put the match away in the 197-pound bout when he scored a 15-0 technical fall in the second period against Ishmal Williams. Villers overpowered Williams from the start as he scored points on two takedowns, two three-point near-falls, two stalling points and an escape.

The Mountaineers return to action in two weeks when they travel to Edinboro, Pa., to compete in the Eastern Wrestling League tournament on March 4-5.
