WVU, KEHLER EARN ACADEMIC HONORS

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (June 17, 2002) * The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) has recognized West Virginia University's 2001-02 wrestling team and Ryan Kehler for their excellence on the mat and in the classroom.

WVU had a team grade point average of 3.12, which ranked 9th in the nation among all Division I programs. The Mountaineers were the only team that finished in the Top 15 at the NCAA championships (13th) and in the Top 10 on the NWCA all-academic team list.

The team's grade point average was compiled by averaging the 10 starters and two other wrestlers who saw action in a varsity match during the season. Kehler, a native of Klingerstown, Pa., was named a third-team academic All-American. The heavyweight, who set the WVU career pins record with 29 and qualified for the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive year, has a 3.62 GPA majoring in physical education.
