Weston Places at Navy Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (November 22, 2008) – Six wrestlers from West Virginia University competed at the Navy Classic in Halsey Field House on Saturday evening. Redshirt-freshman Matthew Weston placed fourth at the event in the 184-pound division.

Weston defeated Campbell’s Kyle Higgins in a 13-7 decision in his first bout of the day. In his second match, the Petoskey, Mich., native took an 11-4 decision against The Citadel’s Brian Hurley. Weston lost a close 5-2 decision at the hands of Bucknell’s David Thompson, the runner-up at 184 pounds.

Redshirt-freshman Kyle Eason also had a successful day, posting two victories at the event. After falling 7-5 in sudden victory to Duquesne’s Tony Clark, Eason pinned Franklin & Marshall’s Matt Gittleman at the 2:41 mark. In his second match in the consolation bracket, Eason dominated Gardner Webb’s Justin Guthrie, earning a 15-0 technical fall just 3:15 into the bout.

At 165 pounds, junior Thomas Slaugh won via a pin fall at 3:54 against Campbell’s Peter Comis.

The other half of the Mountaineers will compete tomorrow at the “Sprawl & Brawl” dual meets in Vestal, N.Y. The event starts at 9:45 a.m. and will take place in West Gym at Binghamton University.
