MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Redshirt junior Matt Ryan’s 7-2 decision win over Ohio’s Ryan Garringer sealed a team victory for West Virginia as it beat the visiting Ohio Bobcats, 23-14, Saturday night at the WVU Coliseum.

In front of 526 fans, the Mountaineers improved to 8-5 overall while the Bobcats fall to 9-5 on the year.

“I would have liked to have seen a bit more energy in a few spots, but overall I was very happy with the win,” says WVU coach Craig Turnbull. “We got the job done over a very capable team that beat the 12th-ranked team in the country a week ago.”

Sophomore Shane Young gave WVU a quick 3-0 lead with a 4-3 decision over Bobcat Gabe Ramos. Young earned a takedown with two seconds remaining in the first period and then early in the third period for the winning points.

At 133 pounds, redshirt freshman No. 13-ranked Nathan Pennesi boosted the Mountaineer lead to 7-0 with an 11-0 major decision win over Ohio’s Jake Wojcik.

Ohio’s No. 13 Germane Lindsey cut the WVU lead to 7-3 with a 3-2 decision over freshman Michael Morales. Lindsey scored a takedown and an escape in the second period while Morales had two escapes in the match.

Redshirt senior Brandon Rader picked up bonus points for WVU with a victory by pin over Ohio’s Darrin Boing in 5:55. Rader earned three takedowns in the bout and two escapes before the fall.

“I was pleased with (Michael) Morales’ effort as a true freshman going up against a nationally ranked opponent,” Turnbull says. “We were expecting bonus points from (Brandon) Rader and (Nathan) Pennesi, so I was happy that they both got those wins for us.”

WVU’s Ryan Goodman earned his fourth dual meet victory of the year with a 7-3 decision over Ohio’s Chris Kline, increasing the team lead to 16-3. Goodman had three takedowns in the match, one per period, along with an escape for the tally.

At 165 pounds, WVU’s Donnie Jones increased the lead to 20-3 for the Mountaineers with a 14-5 major decision victory over Steve Wilson. It was Jones’ second win of the year over Wilson as he had six takedowns in the bout.

“It was gratifying for (Ryan) Goodman to get that win for himself and for us,” Turnbull says. “His confidence picked up this past week in practice and we’re happy for him. It was a win that we really needed. Donnie (Jones) has been doing a nice job – he’s wrestling quickly and has been getting wins for us.”

Ohio’s No. 16 Nick Purdue trimmed the WVU lead to 20-7 with an 11-0 major decision over WVU’s redshirt junior Robert DeSano, who started his first dual meet of the year. Purdue had three takedowns and two near-fall points in the bout.

Matt Ryan, ranked No. 20, increased the WVU lead to 23-7 with a 7-2 decision over Ohio’s Ryan Garringer. Ryan earned two takedowns and two escape points in the match along with 2:48 of riding time for the win.

Ohio’s No. 11 Erik Schuth provided his team four points with an 11-3 major decision over Kyle Rooney to cut the lead to 23-11 for WVU. Rooney had a takedown and escape, but could not overcome Schuth’s four takedowns.

In the final bout, Ohio’s No. 17 Jeremy Johnson picked up a 4-0 decision over WVU’s heavyweight Philip Mandzik to close the match with a final team score of 23-14 for the Mountaineers.

“It was a good win over a good team and we’ll take it,” Turnbull says. “Hopefully we’ll have a good week of practice to close out the season well next weekend.”

The Mountaineers continue EWL play next weekend as they face Edinboro on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and Cleveland State on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The team has designated Friday night’s bout with Edinboro as the team’s Senior Night.
