COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Behind the momentum of six pins and two technical falls, the West Virginia wrestling team dominated Johns Hopkins, 48-0, and Franklin & Marshall, 41-0, at the season-opening University of Maryland Duals in College Park, Md.

“It was really valuable and really important for us to get started,” said coach Craig Turnbull. “We needed to get out there with an official again. There are several people that have been out of the lineup for a couple of years. It is so different than being in the practice room.”

In the team’s opening matchup against Johns Hopkins, redshirt junior Colin Johnston, redshirt senior Matt Ryan and redshirt sophomore Mac Mancuso each collected pins.

Redshirt sophomore Nathan Pennesi earned a technical fall against Stephen Pagliuca, 17-2.

In the first match of his collegiate career, freshman Dominic Prezzia recorded a pin against Johns Hopkins’ Eric Norgord with 1:57 remaining in the first period.

“Dominic’s start was very encouraging and he was rewarded for his effort,” Turnbull said. “How well this team does from a dual meet standpoint will depend on how well the middleweight classes do.”

Junior Shane Young and redshirt junior Lance Bryson collected pins in the team’s second match against the Diplomats.

Redshirt senior Brandon Williamson, who missed last season due to injury, earned a 15-0 technical fall against Alex Henry of Franklin & Marshall.

“It was important for the guys that missed time to go out and compete again, while also having success,” Turnbull said. “The weekend overall was very positive for us. It was a very good beginning and our guys approached it with good intensity and good effort.”

WVU’s last shutout came on Feb. 19 against Cleveland State last season and the team’s 48 points were its most since 2009 against Duquesne when it tallied 57.

The Mountaineers will return to action next weekend at the Washington & Jefferson Tournament in Washington, Pa.
