MOUNTAINEERS WIN NAVY CLASSIC
JONES SETS CONSECUTIVE WINS RECORD
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (November 23, 2002) – The West Virginia
University wrestling team won six weight classes en route to a
first-place finish at the Navy Classic in Annapolis, Md., on Saturday
afternoon. The Mountaineers finished with 130.50 points, outdistancing
Kent State (116), Navy (113.50) and N.C. State (87).
On his way to winning the 174 bracket, Greg Jones ran his
winning streak to 25 on Saturday setting the school record. The previous
mark was 23 which was held by his brother, Vertus, in 1999-2000. Jones
pinned No.15 Dustin Kawa in 2:45 of the championship match.
For the second consecutive week, Brandon Lauer and Shane Cunanan
earned co-championship honors at 141. Lauer advanced with two pins and a
major decision while all three of Cunanan's victories came by major
decision.
Ryan Wilman (184) captured his first career tournament title by
defeating Kent State's Alex Camargo 4-3 in the finals. Billy Smith (149)
won his second consecutive tournament title in as many weeks with a 9-2
win over Jake Giamoni of N.C. State. Redshirt freshmen Seth Lisa
took top honors at 125 with a 4-1 decision over N.C. No. 18 State's George Clinton.
Brent Miller finished second at heavyweight, losing 6-3 to No.9
Stephen Kovach of Navy in the finals, while
Matt Lebe (157) added a runner-up finish for the Mountaineers.
Lebe fell 18-6
to Scott Garren.
Anthony Regalbuto (174) and Brian Floyd (133) finished third in
their respective brackets, Mike Torriero (157) finished fourth and
Adrian Thompson (197) finished sixth to round out the scoring for the
Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers return to action December 6-7 at the Las Vegas
Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev.
