WVU JUMPS IN RANKINGS

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (December 5, 2001) * After an impressive performance at the Las Vegas Invitational, the West Virginia University wrestling team has moved to eighth in the recent IntermatWrestle.com poll. The Mountaineers were ranked 17th in last week's poll.

In addition, seven individuals were ranked in the latest Amateur Wrestling News (AWN) poll, including four in the top 10. Greg Jones was ranked sixth at 174, Tom McMath was listed as seventh at 165, Joe Carr was eighth at 157 and Billy Smith was ranked 10th at 149. Other wrestlers ranked by AWN were Brandon Lauer (14th at 133), Shane Cunanan (15th at 141) and Ryan Kehler (16th at heavyweight).

In the IntermatWrestle.com individual rankings, Jones, McMath and Carr were all ranked eighth in their respective weight classes. Smith was 16th and Cunanan was 17th according to the poll.

The Mountaineers open the home portion of the schedule this Friday, December 7, against Clarion. The Eastern Wrestling League Match will be begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Coliseum.
