Mountaineers Second After Day One

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (December 6, 2002) The West Virginia University wrestling team finished the first day of the Las Vegas Invitational in second place. The No.8 Mountaineers have 81 points and trail only No.5 Ohio State (86.50). Third-ranked Minnesota is in third (80.50), No.6 Michigan is in fourth (68) and No.10 Illinois is in fifth (64).

Five Mountaineer wrestlers advanced to the semifinals and eight West Virginia wrestlers are still alive in the two-day tournament. Brandon Lauer (133) defeated Mark Jayne of Illinois, 12-10, to advance to the semis. Shane Cunanan (141) scored a takedown with just over 15 seconds remaining to defeat No.15 Clark Forward. Billy Smith (149) upset sixth-ranked Collin Robertson 3-2 in the quarterfinals. Greg Jones (174) scored an escape in the tiebreaker to get by No.14 Curtis Owen. Brent Miller (HWT) scored a takedown in the third period to secure a 3-2 win over Clint Walbeck.

Matt Lebe (157) was very aggressive in the first period but could not hold off top-ranked Luke Becker and lost 8-3. Ryan Wilman (184) surrendered three back points in the first period against Mauricio Wright and dropped a 7-3 decision.

Seth Lisa (125) remained alive in the consolation bracket by picking up two victories. Adrian Thompson (197) was eliminated with a 10-3 loss to Tim Boldt.

The tournament will conclude tomorrow at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The individual results are as follows:
