Wrestling's Jones Named Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va., (December 8, 1999) Senior Vertus Jones has been West Virginia University's Athlete of the Week for his efforts in leading the Mountaineer wrestling squad to their best-ever sixth place, 76.5 team point, performance at the Las Vegas Invitational last weekend.

Jones captured the 184-lb. weight class title in remarkable fashion, sweeping through his competition with six straight victories. The native of Slickville, Pa., defeated two ranked opponents in the semi-finals and finals, respectively, to earn his first Las Vegas Invitational championship. Jones, a two-time All-American and a three-time Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) champion, has yet to lose a match this season and has a combined record of 14-0.

Also, for his efforts in the Las Vegas Invitational, Jones was named the EWL wrestler of the week.

Jones and the Mountaineers are back in action Saturday, Dec. 11, at 1 p.m. in the WVU Shell Building for their season opening dual meet against rival Clarion.
