Mountaineer Wrestlers Head to Raleigh

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Nov. 10, 2012) – The West Virginia University wrestling team travels to Raleigh, N.C., to compete in the Wolfpack Open held at Reynolds Coliseum, with tournament action set to begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Nov 11.

In addition to the Mountaineers, this year’s Wolfpack Open will include top wrestling talent from Gardner-Webb, Virginia, Chattanooga, VMI, Appalachian State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Duke, Maryland, Old Dominion, Davidson, NC State, King College and Utah Valley.

“Tournaments are a whole different animal,” says coach Craig Turnbull. “You are going to have as many as 10 or 15 mats going all at once. Tournaments early in the year give us an opportunity to get matches under each guys’ belt. It gives a kid like Colin (Johnston), who has missed the previous two seasons due to injury, the chance to get to three, four or five matches.”

WVU will send 21 student-athletes to the all-day tournament, as Shane Young, Colin Johnston, Nathan Pennesi, Brutus Scheffel, Dominic Prezzia, Ross Renzi, Bubba Scheffel, Lance Bryson, A.J. Vizcarrondo, Phil Mandzik, Michael Bolash, Christian Chirico, Mark Colabucci, Terrence Demery II, Nicholas Hylton, Roman Perryman, Daniel Suite, Gage Swartz, Greg Thurston, Tre Miller-Scott and Dink Purnell are all set to compete.

“The matches in Raleigh will not be as intense in some ways because there is no team scoring, such as in a dual meet,” Turnbull says. “You are going for the value of getting guys some experience in multiple matches.”

Live results from the Wolfpack Open will be available on TrackWrestling.com

A full recap of the day’s action will be available on WVUsports.com following the completion of competition.
